Title: What caused these streaks in my shotgun bore? PIC
Post by: Recurve-Elk on May 02, 2012, 01:31:28 PM
So I shot 35 rounds or so through my shotgun last weekend.  4 shots were federal magnum heavyweights,  8 were federal magnum leads, the rest were #6 lead field loads.

What would cause this?  I don't think that its scratches ( and hope not. )  Maybe plastic fouling from the flight control wads?

Any Ideas of what it is, and how to get it out of there?  I soaked the barrel in solvent for about 5 mins, then ran my wire brush through maybe 15 times.  The marks are still there.

Looks like the wad is the culprit.  Get some good solvent and scrub like heck with a brush then follow with lots of patches...  should be gone.

Those look like scratches to me.  Wad residue is usually in the forcing cone and the choke only.

Thats what I was thinking huntbear

CP,  That's what I figured too, but the thing is, the federal ammo has these flite control wads.  They are almost as long as the shell itself and hold the shot inside the wad.  But, if it is scratches, what do you think would of caused it?

Something between the wad and the shell case, like incorrectly loaded shot.  Or it could be something (a small rock - ?) in the barrel or chamber when the gun was fired.

Are they hand loads or factory loads?

Try wrapping a piece of one of these around a brush and chuck the cleaning rod in a drill.  Soak the pad in WD-40 and run it in the bore with drill on low speed.

Only ever fired factory loads through it.

Ill try the scotch brite pad trick when I get the chance.

Second question.  God forbid they are scratches... Is that a problem? or nothing to worry about?

It’s not that big a deal.  You’ll want to smooth them out as much as possible so the wad doesn’t drag or snag on the scratch but once smooth they won’t affect your pattern much if at all.
