Title: Youth Points Roll Over?
Post by: Rhino on May 04, 2012, 06:07:16 PM
Do youth special permit points roll over? This is my son's 1st year as an adult and i just bought his permits and some of his points from previous years were not shown. I always thought they would roll over to adult hunts. Im wondering if they changed when they went to seperate catagories or game dept made a mistake. Thanks for any info.

I have heard they don't.  Specially now with all the different categories for each animal, like quality, bull, cow, youth, senior, ect.  So once you aren't a youth hunter anymore where would the points go.  I have been putting my son in for all kinds of permits not only youth.  This is his last year as a youth hunter.  So for instace he has 6 points in all elk categories including youth.  So say he doesn't get drawn for anything this year all his points will go to 7 but if the youth rolled over, where would they go?  Would he get 7 extra points in every category?

those points will disappear, think of them as a donation to the game department after this year

They dont go away but they remain as youth points only, so they are useless once he is no longer a youth.

I guess I should have specified that... basically a donation

Bob33 hit it on the head.

youth points do you no good when you're no  longer a youth.

What you need to do is also put your kids in for all the other hunts- buck/bull, quality, antlerless, and build up points in those categories as well. The youth category is just for kids until they're 16 so there's no reason the points should move into any other category.  Like with the moose, I'm putting my girls in for the youth and the regular moose permits as well, because once they're 16 that's where they're going to need the points.

But just think- when you're kids turn 65 they'll have points waiting for them in that category (if they've been applying since before 2010).

Thanks for the info guys! I wished i had been putting my son in for the adult hunts! Lets all spread the word to our budddies putting in for their kids! I hate learning as you go! I wish the game dept was more specific on these permits!

I did put my daughter in for all hunts when she started hunted at the age of 10, but this year because of the prices she only applied for the quality deer, elk and moose tags. I had been building up her sheep and goat points just in case someday she wanted to apply for those hunts but not anymore. After buying the licenses and permit apps for the wife, daughter and me it's just way too expensive to keep building points in every category. Good luck on the youth draw, my daughter never did draw an elk permit in the youth section, the only youth tag she drew was the green river any buck permit.

They should be able to hang onto them for when they turn 65. :chuckle:

I have been entering my son in all the OIL hunts since he was 9. But only as a ghost hunt. I dont want him to get drawn until he is old enough to really appreciate it.
So when he is 18 he will have 9 points to start with

I don't think they roll over, look at the average points to draw-3 maybe.  That is why kids don't draw for 15 years and up like we do.

The ''Only'' part wasn't putting the tag down by any means. It was one of the most memorable hunts I've ever been on. My dad had a disabled doe tag and he shot the doe that was with my daughters 3 point buck.

I think I remember the pics and write-up that you put on this site for that hunt.  It was pretty cool.  8)
