Hey guys,
I found a closed NF road that is lined with more blackberry bushes than I've ever seen in one place. This is right by where I found the scraped up dead tree... Is it legal for me to walk up this road looking for brother bear, or is this considered "the road"? Do I need to keep it just to the back country, trails and clear cuts?

The regs say maintained portion of a public highway.

No one is going to bother you behind gates or water bars. Have at it.

Ditto that,
Send it, When you locate target. And then post pictures. :IBCOOL:

Suh weet. Gonna bag me a burr!!!
Now I just have to figure out how to stay quiet on the gravel. :bash:

I'm sure it's a spot that everybody knows about and there will be 100 people up there when fall bear starts.

You can make or buy padded over shoes/socks to muffle noise on any surface... they just don't last very long... If you slow down and are careful where you step, and don't drag your feet it will acomplish almost the same thing.

Public Highway: Any road, regardless of surface, maintained by public funds
Nope, good way to have your gear confiscated....

A closed road is not maintained.

not true.
Because it is closed doesn not mean that it is not maintained. Lots of areas have closed roads, or even gated roads, that are service access or handicap only access.
now, if there is a big trap ditch or piles of brush or rocks blocking the road. Then I would agree with you.

I wouldn't be too worried. walking down a gated road with a loaded firearm isn't illegal/ :twocents:

If the road doesn't get a lot of vehicle traffic it might have grass or moss growing down the middle and on the sides. Makes for a quiet walking surface.
