I took a 4 day road trip for some velvet shots and just got back tonight. Ended up with 2157 pictues...about 26 gigs worth of raw shots. A lot for me, but I ended up having a lot of subjects on this trip. Got good shots of mulies, whitetails, bison, bear, elk, pronghorn, etc. I'm a little tired, but here are a few. Wish I could enter that velvet contest...

This ram was incredible. I'll call him Roman because his nose is broke. From a side view it is a huge roman nose. A real fighter here. The flies were bothering him bad.

Fixed! :)

whatever pope...any day now... :'(
-

-
What else can ya say but WOW. Good shots man.
-
Great pics as usual Pope I can't wait to see more!
-
DUDE thse are awesome pics!
-
Nice pics Shawn!
Your going to have to let me tag along on your next trip, Im getting a really nice big piece of glass this week. ;)
-
Gas cost me a lot of money... I had Tony as a sidekick on this one and once again he outshot me with good photos. Good to see you are around Elkman. We need your photos around here. What glass we talking about here Elkman? VR? My buddy was using the 200-400 f4 and the 500 f4. His favorite seems to be the 200-400. It's really the perfect wildlife lens if you like black colored lenses...
Here is another one of some more velvet...lots of velvet. Got this one at 7AM this morning just as the sun peaked over the mountains. Elk experts, what does that middle elk score? (it's got to be somewhere between 350 and 400, but I have no clue. I can tell you he looks bigger in all the other angles. His fronts are weak)

super pics!!!!!!
-
Cant see the eyeguards but 370ish with the extras.
-
Actually I'll correct myself as looking through the other photos the fronts look big. It's the main beam that is a tad short and he isn't terribly wide.
-
You are correct sir :). 200-400 f4 VR
Still trying to decide on the D3 or D300 for the new body. Leaning really hard towards the D3 for the low light / low noise ability, and of course the 35mm censor size.
Need to post up some, just been very busy. was at the MotoGP races in Laguna Seca 2 weeks ago and shot over 4000 pics, then my 80-200 2.8 decide to break on me. almost had it fixed till it fell off the table on to the floor. :bash: :bash:
By the way, Love the Ram shot
-
$2000 in gas and thats all you got....quit holding out on me. :chuckle: Great ones so far, keep them coming.
Dang elkman, its ok to drop kids on their heads, but not the lens. :)
-
Pope, I'm not one of the experts but my first impression was 366! Dang Bucklucky were allways in the same neighborhood! :dunno:
-
Great shots, can't wait to see more of them.
-
I would love to tag it and let you measure it this fall. :)
-
I think that would be a federal offense Bone. :bdid:
Elkman, I would definitely go for the D300. The crop sensor really buys you that added magnification. The 200-400 on a D3 would be too short. I never needed more than iso 800 this weekend for wildlife. You like doing landscapes though, so the D3 is perfect for that and general shooting. I don't know.
Maybe I'll have some time tonight to post another one...
-
Great photos. I check in several times a day just to look at the photos. Yellowstone?? Truely Awesome!!
-
I think he is shooting the Bison range gramps.
They do tend to get a little fiesty if you start shooting those critters I suppose. :chuckle: Looking forward to the next shot.
-
Hey Shawn,
As always you posted some fantastic photos! Now, Let's see each and every one of them! :yike: ;) :) :P
Dick
-
Yeah, some of my photos are from Yellowstone. I'm going to try and make a big Yellowstone trip in Sept... I try and stay away from the typical bulls and meadows that the hordes of other photographers are on. Here is one that was miles from the road.
-
nice lighting on that one.
-
Excellent photos, man they almost look like I'm looking out the window at them... Talent for certain.... Bring on the rest
-
VERY impressive Pope! Great photo's. Always look forward to seein' your work.
-
Nice photos :o keepem coming
-
Dang!! Nice pics! Looks like you had a blast.

I can't express how jealous I'm. Looks like a great trip. I will do it someday with my family. My girls are only 1 and 2.5 a little young for that long of a car ride. keep the photos coming. :cmp1:
-
Those are gorgeous. Thank you for sharing them.
-
Pope if you ever need someone to be a camera carrier let me know. Those are very nice pictures. The muley bucks are among the best Ive ever seen. Thanks for posting them.
Sage
-
Thanks all. Sage, now that I know you will be carrying my gear I'll take a big 20 lb 600mm lens next time... :)
I'll post some more tonight.
-
It would be worth it to tag along on one of your trips, Shawn!
-
I wonder if that 600mm is still for sale. Dang that was nice lens
-
Yep... ;)

I wonder if I could get close enough to a deer with that in decent light to get a good picture. :)

I don't think you would have to leave your house to do that.
-
By the way, it takes the 1.4x converter very well. That makes it an 840mm f5.6 lens. If you take into account the crop factor with a Canon xxD series camers, it turns out to be a 1344mm f5.6 lens with image stabilization... Crazy. If you computed that to binoculars/spotting scope language it's a 27x magnification. It's a tank of a lens. I am not carrying it though, Sage is so I'm not worried about weight... :chuckle:
-
I Think it would be well worth it..........Ill just leave my lunch at home, should be about the same weight........... :chuckle:
Sage
-
Pope nice Pics!!! I'd say he's right at 350!!!
-
Here is a few more. I'll save the huge muley photos for a rainy day...
Here is another photo of that elk. They look so impressive when they are in velvet. When I first saw it I thought it was a 400" elk, but now I've come back to reality. His royals and main beams look short. Looks like he was wallowing also.

Juvenile bald eagle flying over me.
For you deer guys, a couple big whitetails. One is a 3 point and the other a 4 point. They didn't stick around long...
One of my favorite photos of the trip. Right before the sun went down this pronghorn decided to use this weed as a scratching post. I got about 20 shots of him scratching his face. It was a good catch.
Well, after posting these 8 photos that leaves 2099 more photos to post in the future... (including some gagger mulies)
-
Pope how bout a sneak peek
Sage
-
Thank You Pope....a little preview of a Mulie would be good.
-
Oh YEAH on those whities. Thats AWESOME.
-
always love to see your great pics. keep up the great work
-
Sweet pics pope, but you are killing us with the gagger muley comment. Show those next. . . please. If I can recall a quote from you back during my journey last Dec, "Freshman girls in HS didn't tease that bad".

LOL. That does sound like something I would say. Here is a couple little tikes. Tony got all the pictures of the huge bucks. You'll have to wait until he posts them someday... ;)

Thanks guys. The encouragement is appreciated. When I come back from a trip like this my wife asks, "what are you going to do with all those photographs?" It's a good question and one I can't readily answer. I enjoy them myself but wouldn't mind sharing them with others. That's why I post them on here. I suspect there are a lot of guys like me out there that just enjoy taking good photos and never do anything with them. I only shoot what I want and when I want, and that keeps it fun.
Some of my favorite photos aren't of huge muley bucks or rams. (although that helps...) Here is a couple more I like. The baby deer is my 3 year old daughter's favorite.

Keep them coming! We cannot get enough of them, I am sure!
-
Great photo's Pope, thanks for the fix.
-
That Buffalo one is awesome!! Or is it a Bison?? IDK the difference.
-
AWESOME! great job as usual.
-
Was I out in the sun too much today. Did my wife smack me just one too many times, but why is that buffalo picture more exciting to me that that mule deer. That is unreal. SWEET SHOT POPE.
-
He was a nasty rutting bull and had just been rolling in the dust. He jumped up and this is the first shot where the dust cleared his face. You can see the flies and his staredown. After this is ran down some females and beat a few small bulls up. It was incredible the strength these guys have.
-
Is it just me or does that buffalo look like samuel l jackson?

Since Samuel is in the hospital I will not offer a comment.
-
I hadn't heard he was in the hospital. Are you thinking of Bernie Mac?
-
Bernie Mac is dead. Morgan Freeman is in the hospital. He rolled a car, it was on his "Bucket List" :yike:

I really had a fun time shooting Bison on this trip. This guy was rutting hard and kind of pissed when He noticed I was close to him. He stopped rolling around to give me the bloodshot evil eye. These are just nasty sounding animals in the rut. Fun to shoot but the lighting was really difficult on us.
-
I wonder what it feels like to take one of these guys in the chest. I think I will stick to butterflies. :chuckle:
-
Beautiful images pope!
-
The bison shots are awesome..I am always amazed how quick those huge things move.
