Title: Observatory
Post by: Westsidebowhunter on May 09, 2012, 09:23:41 PM
Just curious what your thoughts are on this tag for archery and muzzleloading I should have enough points to draw either but I wasn't to impressed for what I saw for big bulls in their last year so wanted to know if I should save the points or give it a try. If I do get it what should i expect? Any info would be great thanks guys!

This year the muzzleloader permit would be pretty good, because the general spike season doesn't start until the 6th, and with that permit beginning on the 1st, you would have it to yourself for 5 days. Plus you'd hopefully catch the tail end of the rut. The archery permit is during the general archery season so you'd have lots of company, but you'd still probably have a good hunt. How many points do you have? The archery permits looks like a relatively easy draw, but the muzzleloader, doesn't look like a guarantee, even if you have max points.

Generally it depends on the weather.....  It can be a blank or AWESOME.    Tribal pressure was extremly hard this year as there wasn't snow to keep them out.

some local bulls around but not many biguns. If you know where to hunt it and where the preasured elk go you can do well . that being said you can burn alot of boot leather there aswell. I really don't understand the number of permits since it gets so much preasure . Expect to have company and that can make it tough to kill a bull. Every so often a good bull shows up looking for cows in mid sept . though the first week is your best bet to kill a elk I think i've seen better bulls right before the end of the archery season.

weather is a huge factor, I've seen nothin for the first few days then hundreds of elk after a big snow storm...
Start scouting for the local bulls because there are a few nice ones around...check out my profile pic for proof as this set was found in observatory area

THE natives junked the whole area this year(or last) because of no snow to keep them out. :bash: Its hit or miss. You will then contend with nothin but coasties from there. I live here! been there done that ! NOT AGAIN! :yeah:

My group that has been hunting there for 20+ years has always had more branched bulls around camp than you would believe.
I wish I could get my friend to figure out his damn camera so he could upload the video from last season of 20+ cows, and 5 bulls, all 5pt+ IN FULL RUT !!, grunting, squealing, glunking, you name it.
He was not drawn, so just filmed, 1/2 hour in an area surrounded by road, with one spur through the middle.
You would be surprised how many Elk watch vehicles drive past them, GET OUT AND WALK !!
The last season I hunted there (4 years ago) I was drawn, and attempted to get this bull, but his 24 cows and 3 satellites kept ruining it  :bash:
one time, we BOTH , (me and the Bull) watched a truck drive by, windows down, radio blaring, guys talking, 2 times, as they drove in and out, w/o ever stopping..
I was too stupid to move while the vehicle had him distracted..  :o

I am putting in for it as my second choice. There is a lot of tags which helps the chances but also makes it a little more packed with guys if you do draw. I have spent time in there and as long as you get back off the road you can find the elk but it will take hard work and a little luck.  :twocents:

I had the archery tag last year. Was in to elk every day and seen some dandys in the Umtanum unit.....

I stayed in the Umtanum unit mostly, there is just to many people in Manashtash unit during that tag.

And even in the 95 degree weather I had last year, I was seeing elk

What a bunch of BS.
If you stay away from the jeep trails you won't find them. I stgayed away from them and hardly zseen anyone else hunting. There were a few guys
Where I was on quads but that was it, other then that, had the area to my self.

If its a trail that jeeps and quads can legally drive on then why are you walking down it. get off the road!

No ATV or jeep trails where I was successful last year. I thought my Brother in-law was gonna croak just getting up to where my elk was to assist in the pack out. We started the pack out in the dark with heavy packs and made it back to the truck at 9pm. Then my wife and I went back up the next morning to finish the job. Success for me is much sweeter when I put in a strong effort to earn it.

tons of motorcycles, no elk, it should be called observatory ORV park.  Did I mention no elk???  Better you stay out of this area very hard to be successful especially during archery.  It's a big unit but I'm specifically talking about 340.  Listening to these guys will only draw dissapointment.  It will take you only a couple days to figure out who's telling the truth.   :chuckle:

This is my Observatory Bull from last year, I shot him the 6th day of the season started high and worked my way down. There was no weather up top, I saw several really big bulls. There was a really big bull with the bull pictured bellow but unfortunately he was ahead of this one in the heavy timber. I didnt see him until after I shot this bull. Then I sat for 10-15 min and watched big boy stand over my downed bull, as if waiting for him to get up. It was a heart breaker but that's hunting.

First time I ever hurt that much and had a smile the entire time! when ever I think about that hunt, a smile quicly returns. For me and my wife, this was the hunt of our lifetimes! We dreamed of drawing an elk tag year after year without success. When I finally drew the cow tag, we were very excited! It was the kind of excitement you should get if you draw a OIL tag! Thanks again Ribka, We will never forget your kindness.

oops sorry not observatory, i just wanted to see what them experts know from pictures when it comes to judging score, you would be very surpised in this bulls score!

BUT... I grew up in the Wenas valley and spent alot of times in the mountains of the observatory and there are alot of big bulls up there, alot of times in late summer i see them just driving up the road. they are there and if you spend some time in the area it wont take long to find them.

in 2002 or 2003 I killed the muzz WA record bull. at the time he was 370 gross and 356 or so net i believe. Now that bull isnt in the top 8. And that is just considering those that report it to NW Biggame. You can probably double those stats. I killed my bull in the early morning but it was going to be a 70+ degree weather day. I seen two 6pts around 300 class on the way out that morning I could of killed. I agree, there are some great MIGRATORY spots for these Manashtash bulls who are headed with the cows down to Joe Watt and Robinson canyons.

I see they give 1 rifle tag out...  since the Margaret is no longer going to be a quality tag... I may just start putting my 10 pts. and growing every year,  towards that tag next year..... and the next, and the next and the next....   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I call BS on that score!  Who scored it?  I don't see it being any bigger than 320"

How about pic's of those past hunts?????

My Observatory bull from last year. 359 6/8. Yes, this was a decent hunt area not that long ago. (Like last year!)
exactly bull pictures are hard to judge size... I didn't want to be a huge *censored* and say 250" but figured it was small in score.  Doesnt' really matter if you are happy about shooting it then thats all.  All the bulls are awesome and hopefully the management of our herds is changed so we don't lose all the bulls that we have gotten so big.

yes it is hard to judge It is hard to judge them from pictures but that 359" bull doesn't look even close to 359" from the picture.  Usually you can make a bull look bigger then it is but not often smaller...  Give me a break about what?  Keep hunting on the west side and stay out of the East side tags!

I had archery bull permit last year. Spent the whole season up there and saw one bull day before opener. Got into the cows but just couldn't connect. I learned quite a bit of the area around frost.  This summer I need to get down there and explore more areas. Seemed like we just weren't in with the big bulls and the weather didn't help.
Weekend before opener there was a huge bull with cows down in B meadows and I thought for sure I was going to have the hunt of a lifetime. Not so much.

Anyway, great area, just need to explore it and learn it.  Plan on at least two weekend trips this summer.

320-or 280 that bull is a shooter all day long in there , there's only a had full of bigger bulls in there . if you have the rut tag it's only five days so if your gonna look to shoot a bigger bull than that you best have spent the two weeks before trying to locate him .

My Cousin and his dad drew as partners with 14 points each for the observatory rifle tag should be a fun good time he was pissed last year the first year he decided not to put in as a group and we drew the peaches ridge any bull tag.  guess i should have talked him in to letting me join his group this year oh well i can use my manastash rifle cow tag should be meet to add to the freezer.

Dad drew the archery. We have at least one in camp now.

I ended up with a second deer tag.
