They can shoot as many bear at they like on a rez? Or, I should say, they can allow someone to shoot as many bear as they like on a rez?
I thought there would be SOME sort of limit. :dunno:

Thats funny

They are having the same trouble as Capital Forest with all the damage the bears are causing.
-
The fellow says he can set up a hunt anyway you like, but the Quinault website specifically says only bait hunting.. I would have nothing to do with buying a hunt from them. There are places just as good if not better.
-
Prepare to pound away.
I dont get it, they charge 250 for each tag. what is the difference between that and the ads for "no kill no fee"?? Dang few folks hunt bear at all here, on the Quinault reservation there is always more tags than people buy. I never went there to hunt, I know some folks who have. The description sounded real lame to me, but then when it was legal, I found bait hunting extremely boring and I will never try it again, and I almost felt guilty, shooting the one bear I did, over bait, when it was legal. The tribe used to have a limit of 50 tags but I have no idea now.
A guy who I know tried it on the res. He gets a call in Olympia, "a bear is hitting the bait, come on up" he goes, follows the "guide" to a spot, guide says "park here" guide drives up the road throws some bait in a barrel, comes back, tells "hunter" sit here, hunter sits, 20 minutes later a mini bear 200-250 lbs. comes in. "guide says shoot" guy shoots, dead bear. Loads it in "hunters" truck says see ya later.
is this different that "high fence hunting" or no kill no pay? or is it cause indians are doing it.??? If you want to pare it down to personal opinion, In MY opinion hunting by baiting is a LOT of work, but it aint hunting.
So splain to me, why are you mad?

Supposedly (I heard this last weekend) that a state record bear was killed on the rez this spring. It is pending certification. Some guy named Chuck Tayler from Montana I believe traded some elk hunts for some bear hunts and killed a whopper. :dunno:
-
I live on the Port Madison rez,, does this mean I too can bait? :chuckle:
-
If any of you decide to do this , be prepared to gut and pack your own bear and also the "guide" will drink all the wiskey and beer you have. I had some clients do this hunt last year. Saw alot of bears. One killed a 300 and the other 2 were dinks but they werent being picky. Seen alot of bears running across the roads on the way in.
-
they are hunting over bait! it should be illegal for them also. it also says that "you can shoot as many bears as you like". they should have a limit!
-
You may not camp on the rez either. Pretty raw deal.
-
Also on craigs list you can ride along in there boat on a whale hunt for $2000.00 for another $1000. they will let You chuck the harpoon at the beast.. :dunno:

This is true. And if you wound one and have to track more then 40 yards you will be asked to come back to the bait and shoot another one.

Top notch guides up there, best around. Aint that right BTKR :bash: :bash:
Dont think they have much respect for the wildlife up there.

As a whole I feel that way. But I am sure there are good ones that respect both their laws as well as ours. Some how the word or term "subsistance" now equals "cash". >:(

They don't respect the fishing resource. Why do you think it would be any different with big game?
-
Looks like I'm in the minority, but I don't see too much wrong here. I think his description leads one to think you are going to shoot 20 bears if you want. I think the reality is that in 3 days, you probably only see one or two bears so if you want a couple then you can. There was a hunting show on the Quinalt last year and they went through the problems they are having with bear. The bear are really destroying their trees and are overpopulated.
Me personally, if I wanted to hunt bear over bait it's nice to know I have a local choice instead of having to go to Alberta or wherever they do that. Also, at that price it seems reasonable. I've heard maintaining bear baits is time consuming so I don't have a problem paying a guy to do that. I'm sure there isn't much to do for the guide during the actual hunt, but the work happened before.
I also sense a lot of animosity because they can bear bait and we can't outside the reservation. That's not their problem. I don't get mad at natives because they sell better fireworks. I don't get mad at natives because I can buy cheap tobacco there.
-
My best friend worked for their forestry department until this past year. The bears are way overpopulated and are extremely hard to hunt because of how thick the growth is in the areas where they are doing the most damage. The quinalts probably have the top hatchery facilities of any tribe anywhere. Whether they respect the wildlife, I can't really say, but tribes are becoming more like a business operation, rather than a way of preserving tradition. I know there are good and bad members of all tribes, and many have shown blatant disregard for wildlife, especially on the peninsula.

Bofire, no pounding from me, but one small comment, a 200-250 pound is actually ABOVE the state average for bears here in WA. 200 to 250 is slightly larger then a normal size bear. Folks need to remember this, most 300 pounders here in WA are actually 200 pounders or even less. :twocents:

I agree with Pope on this. I used to bait ALOT in AK, it cost me roughly $1,000 to maintain two stations for the spring season, all up front and the work load is tremendously hard. The cost of maintaining a Good site is expensive, but rewarding. If I could have sold a hunt or two there I would have in a minute, guides up there sold 3 day hunts for $2,500. I think they're (Natives) are doing something that currently they are allowed to do, yea, I wish I could also, but I am not jealous of them being able to. I also saw a show on this particular hunt, forget which show. They only had a few decent bears come in, the one that was shot wasn't all that great. It is no different than paying another guide of sort for any other type game or hunt, some guides are good and some guides are not so good. Seen alot of the later that took money for crappy services up north.... One particular guide had bait stations in my same area had about a 33% success rate. Our stands had 100% rate going on for eight years of doing it, and we didn't get a fee, other than a kid smiling alot ;). It is just they can do it.... I just don't like paying fees or I'd be on a trip right now... Hmmm sold the extra ATV too soon....

Some of the guides are lazy and the bears are plentiful. I have a friend that this happened to.

I have no problem with the Quinaults selling guided bear hunts over bait. What I do have a problem with is that we can't hunt with bait or hounds on non-tribal land. I know this was passed by initiative, but it should be repealed. If you don't agree with hunting with hounds or bait, you have the choice not to. I have read several books on bear hunting and every one of them has chapters on hunting bear over bait or with hounds.
I say this because we as a community of hunters have to stick together. In the most recent poll on hunting, when asked the question; Do you approve or disapprove of legal hunting?, 77.6% approved (45.4% strongly approved, 32.2% moderately approved) of hunting. This is actually from ten years ago when 73% approved of hunting. There is a rabid minority of animal-rights wackos who will do anything to stop hunting. They will try and take our rights away one at a time, starting with innocent sounding things like the stopping of baiting bears. Whether or not we agree with another hunter's method, he or she is a hunter. We have to stick together. We as the outdoor community are the true conservationists. We obey game laws and we want the resource to flourish.
I have been on some crappy guided trips, so it doesn't suprise me that the Quinaults have some bad ones. I have heard horror stories from friends who went on guided fishing trips with a Quinault guide. In Richard Smith's book "Hunting Black Bears" (published in 2007, so the information is current), he speaks very highly of one of their guides. I don't think that the listing is BS at all.

Northwest Hunter did a show there, they shot a monster. The guides seemed pretty good on the show, for looks I'm sure. I don't remember the exact size but I remember seeing one bear on the show I swear would of almost hit 500lbs. They where baiting with huge piles of salmon carcasses they get from the fish processors in town. They have dump sites that they get rid of that stuff all year. Essentially you are shooting garbage salmon bears. Sounds tasty, :puke: The tip for your guide would be easy, It could come in a case :brew: I guess I personally wouldn't hold bad will at anyone if they did it, when I watched the show I wanted to. The logistics seem iffy and the guides from what I've heard now seem shakey, it almost sounds harder than a normal hunt because of the crap you would have to deal with. Make sure you change your clothing when you leave the reservation so you don't get a DUI while driving away because of the reek of whisky. :chuckle:

Bucklucky, what do you charge for a whale, life size of course. Oh and I don't want to flesh it either :chuckle: :chuckle:
I wonder if they would let me use there 50 BMG :mgun:
