I was out for about 4 hours with another H-W member and his wife yesterday evening. There is no bear crap to be seen yet because this warm weather is just getting the bear moving around good. They had seen a small bear about noon in the valley bottom, we met about 3:30 and then we headed to a favorite spot of mine, but it was too high, we wasted a little time in that area, there was still some snow on the ground and the grass wasn't growing much yet, so we headed back down to lower elevations. We saw two more bear in the evening in lower elevation areas. This cinnamon bear was probably about a 5'3" or 5'4", but we were looking for a bigger bear and watched this bear for maybe 5 minutes before leaving him where he was standing in the last photo. If Michelle would have been there this bear would have been so dead. Heck, if I had a tag this year I might have had to shoot him myself, he was really a pretty colored bear. :chuckle:
We saw another dull black colored bear, I am nearly certain he was wormy as his coat as very dull with no shine. But he wasn't hanging around, the moment he saw us he split for safer parts. He was a good bear, I am just guessing he was 170ish, but definitely not over 200. I know there are a couple much bigger bear in the area so we are hopeful that next time we will find one of the big boys.
Look forward to hunting again when they get time off work.

:yeah: Any bear is a dead bear when Michelle is in the woods ;)

I knew it Michelle.... :chuckle:
Like I said, it's probably a good thing I didn't have a tag either, I have a liking for off-color bear.

Can you find him again or another one next weekend?!

It's hunting, but I usually see at least 1 bear per day when spring hunting.

Michelle, that was the first thing Dale said "Michelle would have shot it!"...
-
Seen two bears in 121 over the last week so they are definitely moving.
-
Yeah, I would have shot that bear.
-
that is a beautiful bear! i would have shot him, heck i would have shot any bear still have never seen one when actually hunting them.
-
Dale - Do you get a lot of wormy bear up there? In all I have shot and guided I've only seen one with roundworm and he had a beautiful black coat. I've heard about it, but never really seen it before.
Though I did shoot one for Oregon State that was pretty sick from a blockage caused by eating three Barbie dolls almost whole. Was a little freaked out field dressing a bear and finding arms and legs poking out of the intestines. Even if they were plastic. Bloody heads in the poop was a bit disturbing too!
The Squaw is sure excited about meeting you and hunting bear up there at your place. Half blind and all the creaping tricks of time are effecting her greatly in our anticipation of her first spring bear hunt. She's a big bear killing machine! Be prepared for one excited little lady.

Thinking back at bear we have killed and the roundworms we have found, I would say that roughly 1 in 30 to 1 in 50 might have roundworms, depending on area where killed. It seems like we have found worms more prevalent in some areas than others. In every bad case of worms, the fur was very dull and overall unhealthy looking, more or less like a dog's coat that has bad worms. There are other worms that bear can have too, but a good dose of roundworms seems to have the worst effect. Thank god most people don't want wormy bear meat, I have a terrible tme gutting a bear that's full of 12 to 15 inch roundworms.... :bash:
But most bear are pretty healthy, I'm sure your wife will enjoy this area and the wildlife, most people hate to leave.
