As you can see she’s spotted you and she’s nervous. She will fly any second now. You have a shotgun and you have to make a decision. Shoot her now on the ground or wait for her to fly.
-
Head shot for me on the ground, no pellets to spit out . Option 2.....on the wing.
-
I usually hesitate a bit if they are on the ground. I would prefer to take them on the fly. If they refuse to fly, I nail 'em.
-
If I am using a bow, anything goes, if using a shotgun it has to be in the air or I won't shoot it.

On the ground. No questions asked. Wouldn't even think twice about it.

:yeah:

If its brown and on the ground its ready to pound... I will use a rock if I have to. a frappucino bottle makes a pretty handy grouse bonker in a pinch.
but if I am hunting with my dogs, I won't shoot if the labs didn't flush it or the setter didn't point. grouse are too few and far between to pass up on a learning experience and chance for bird work. not to mention its just not safe to shoot at something on the ground with dogs in the mix.
-
I agree. If I've got the dog with me, I'll wait for a flush. If not, he's dinner right there on the ground. If my boy is with me; we're pounding him in the grass.
If I am bowhunting...I think I am saving my arrow...
-
Boom.......no hesitation unless I'm in prime deer country with a un-notched tag...
-
On the ground for sure, all of my grouse so far have been shot on the ground.
-
Personally, I feel like I don't need a grouse so bad that I have to shoot one on the ground, so generally I take them on the wing or not at all. Last year however I had one up in a tree when I was hunting huns that wouldn't flush, even after I literally hit it with a rock. It just hopped a couple feet but wouldn't fly. I was on a meat hunt, and so I went ahead and shot it, but now I regret it, as per my first sentence. I should have just had pity on a bird that dumb and let it be.

:yeah: :yeah: I call it payback for all the times they have exploded from brush next to me shortening my life by at least a year every time they do it.

Don't feel bad........a bird that dumb probably would have been eaten by some other predator. :twocents:
-
Hopefully she'll stay put until I can get the atv to stop.
-
If I took even a second to think about it, I would spend that second remembering the relaxing trail rides that have been turned into instant rodeos and then...whack!!
-
This is why I carry a .22 pistol, and why God gave them to us.
:IBCOOL:
-
If I don't have a dog I'd be more then happy to shoot her on the ground. No chance of losing the bird that way.
-
I say ground pound it. I've shot them on the ground and in the air and my taste buds just can't tell the difference.

:yeah:

Judo tip to the head
-
Boom! I've gotten two grouse in the last ten years....
-
Anyone who has put in serious time hunting thunder chickens and hooters knows that the ground or branch shot is the gimme bird for all the misses and holy crrrpps!
-
Why would you hesitate about shooting the grouse on the ground? Unless you thought it was an unsfe situation

:yeah: love fresh grouse, I fry it up with some garlic and other spices.

Shoot!!!! Grouse taste too damn good to chance missing them when they fly.
-
Just kill it, with whatever is handy. Whats that saying about a bird in the hand?
-
If you let it fly, you might be spending the next 2 hours trying to find it. Shoot it now!
-

If you're just getting meat, then there's no reason to hesitate. If you're hunting, then there is obviously a lot more to that than just killing by any means possible.
-
It is hunting, hunting grouse is like hunting mushrooms. Find it, take it home and eat it :dunno: you have to search them out. If I wanted to shoot something flying I'd be duck hunting.

My thoughts exactly. If I am hunting for the sake of hunting, then getting it on the wing would be fabulous, missing it might be even better for those who understand. If I'm hunting for the pot, (rare, but does happen) then I would shoot it. I only hunt for the pot once or twice a year and it is only during backcountry hunts with no other protein but what I collect. I doubt very many here actually go into the backcountry dependent on their shooting to eat. There isn't much like going hungry after hunting all day to sharpen the senses.

Any grouse that runs, is a terrorist. Any grouse that doesn't run is a well-disciplined terrorist.
-
If I'm 'HUNTING GROUSE' I've usually got the shottie in hand. I'd prefer to take them on the wing. If I'm out scouting/hunting for other game and I have pistola or rifle in hand, I'll take them any way I can as long as I can shoot the head off. I won't aim center mass with center/rim-fire cartridge...

This is only my favorite quote EVER!!!
I just LOL'd again when I read it in this reply :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

As the old saying goes.....
"A bird in the hand, is worth 2 in the bush."
-
My wife shot that bird as soon as the pic was posted. :chuckle:
-
This has never been an ethical dilemma for me.
~ I was taught from a very young age, to never look a gift grouse in the beak. :chuckle:
-
Ethically I've got absolutely no problem with shooting on ground, in tree or anywhere else that's safe. But in this situation...I'm not shooting. The only hunting I do is upland birds and the only time I shoot is when my dog points. I live for great dog work and whether I bring home the bird or not really isn't that important to me. The beauty of it is, this only improves the dog work and in the long run he becomes a bird finding and handling machine.
-
in the air for me . I love grouse hunting. Theres no better feeling then knocking a grouse down with a .410 in thick cover .
-
Either way.... I'll take the easier ground shot in a heart beat.... Plus I can aim with my 410 to not have to pick pellets out of the bird....
-
Im out there to get meat, not see if I can hit it in the air, which I can. Meat on the table right there. Whack em'
-
Im a bow hunter anything goes. I shot three with my bow in one day last week. :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:
-
Since I specifically hunt grouse with a .22 pistol only, ground grouse for sure.
