after eviewing our laws in wa i have made the jump.i have sold my 1/4 bore pellet rifle and am shopping for a bow that i can hunt the area with.i first was looking at a bear legion rth package at cabelas.i am a big guy on a budget.they measured me out at 30 1/2 inch draw.i did some research n called valley archery yesterday due to it being a pro shop n after talking for awhile am really looking at the hoyt rampage xt long draw.i will be headin up there on tuesday to shoot a few n get a feel.any insight would be greatly appreciated.if i go with the hoyt its going to take me another month to get a sight n rest n what not but am willing to take the time if it is all that they tell me it is.i am told that i should pick and purchase a release right away to do my test driving.as stated i am completely new to all of this and would really love any insight as far as releases n bow experience between the legion n rampage or any others that may fit the bill.n really any advice in general.thank you in advance.i cant wait to hit our woods.
-
also anyone got any advice on any other pro shops besides spokane valley archery that will carry an assortment of bows in my price range draw length?
-
Look up the Archery place just north of Chewelah. Talk to Red, she's the owner. She know her stuff and won't sell you something you don't need. She used to shoot for Hoyt if I remember right. Get a used one from her and start there. This is where the bowhunters up here go. Plan on staying awhile so she can line you out and get you going. Stay away from Cabelas and those box stores. She has an indoor and outdoor range there too.

thanks, ill have to give her a call n see about getting up there. im kinda scared to get into a used bow to be honest though.

Don't worry too much about buying a used bow. I've been bowhunting for over 25 years, and I've never bought a new bow: always used. They depreciate faster than a new car off the lot will, and archers are gear mongers, and some just have to have the latest and greatest every year and take a significant loss when they sell used.
-
understood.im pretty open to anything right now.i do know that i am hard on my hunting gear.so that is one concern,as far as warranty n such.but bn my first bow id be willing to check something used out as long as i can get into a real sweet rig for a good price.my only other concern is that i dont want the elk around here laughin at me when i hit the woods with last years model,or something sub par.that would be embarrassing.
-
New or used- just make sure it feels right to YOU. I bought a bow that kept putting my back out of place just trying to save money- once I figured out that it was the bow causing problems I traded it in.
Find a bow- practice practice practice. level shots-uphill shots-downhill shots- shots in between trees Practice practice practice
And have a blast with it.

Elk wouldn't care and if guys say anything to you, tell them to pound sand. Nothing wrong with shopping and getting the best bang for your buck. Also, I bet Red would back her sales to you with a warrenty type of deal.
-
man i cant wait.i just found these judo point heads that im thinkin will play hell with the squirrels.it seems all the squirrels till bear n deer open up.
-
thats good to know camp.from all i read theres not much good said about sva but at the same time ill go talk to them.ive had great dealings with brocks gunsmithing n its hard to find a good review of them.but from what you say i think ill be headin north b4 i make a purchase.goin used may be my ticket into immediate shooting.i joke about the elk,but there is something to be said about a virgin piece of equipment at the same time.ive been spendin some time up north prospectin for minerals anyhow so it shouldnt be too far out of the way
-
anothe question thas comin to mind is does anyone in our area fair well on the deer or elk or black bear without a tree stand?i will not be able to afford one till next year i fear.in my younger years the mule deer up in davenport didnt seem to be too difficult to get close 2 n ive seen a crap tone of white tail close up this year in cusick but i know how that can change come huntin season
-
I've shot a lot of deer with a bow and I only had a stand 1 year, and the buck I killed was not from the stand. Not too sure on elk and bear.
-
good to know.these damn accessories are gettin spendy n im gettin close to gettin cut off by the boss
-
Might not be a bad idea to look up the threads on here about Spokane valley archery.
-
ya not very much positive to be said.
-
if you are going to head north to Reds shop in Chewela, try and stop by Whitetail Plus in Deer Park. Greg is the owner and will treat you right. he usually has a few used bows around. i second trying all the bows that you can and choose the one that feels best to you.
-
The Chewelah shop opens at 10 AM FYI.
-
haha good to know.thank you.i was just trying to e mail her to no avail.ill call em before i go to work 2morrow.the more i research the more i think thats where i need to go

She's honest from what I saw of her. I was there for 3 1/2 hours while she set me up and BS'd with others. She makes you shoot your bow before you leave and gives you great pointers too !!

Lady Red @ Camo'd Arrow, Greg @ Whitetail Plus, and Alan @ Wholesale Sports are all good people! The General Store sells bows, but there's no where to shoot them first. Don't get suckered in to SVA's 'membership' for their course, unless you HAVE to shoot 3D targets ALL the time. Join Evergreen Archery Club for $30/year, hit the 5-80 yard range, the 35 target field course, and maybe meet some good people in the mean time! :hello:
FYI, I've never bought a 'new' bow (my '09 MOAB was a last year's closeout on ebay), but if i were going to, I'd happily take the drive to Deer Park or Chewelah. buying a used bow (in a store or on archerytalk) can be damned good bang for your buck! some people change bows like others change underwear, and as stated, depreciation on a bow is crazy!
and don't overlook Martin bows when you're shopping! Made in Walla Walla, they've got some fantastic deals!

ive had great dealings with brocks gunsmithing
you'd be one of the FEW! :chuckle: :bdid:

-
+1 on Whitetails plus. Greg is a great guy and will get you setup right
I will never shop at SVA my opinion
-
well i am going out to camo d arrow n whitail plus on fri.i went to sva today n shot a couple bows.gota say i dont wana b biased goin into this but i really really like the rampage xt.found out i am only a 30 inch draw 2 so thats a plus.the guy out there was nice but 599 bare bow n 900 set up is a little more than i can afford unless sumthin great happens real soon.
-
o man i just found a carbon element on archery talk for 800 bucks.if that guy will come down some ill b in business.i am sold on findin a used bow now
-
There are some 1 year old bows out there u can get for the fraction of the cost of a new one and you can find sights, rests and quivers used for half the price with nothing wrong with them
-
heck ya,thanks for all the insight guys.i was really kinda against used stuff.but with the cost of new stuff n the advice of u guys i had to take a look n ill be.all a guys got to do is waita year n those bows drop fast.now its time to find some used sights n stuff for sure.this crx 32 is everything ive ever dreamed of
-

I'm new to bow hunting as well. Last week I picked up a used Matthews SQ32 from a friend. It's 10 years old, but it has been well maintained. I've been shooting with it all week and it shoots like a dream. It's not a speed burner, but it's accurate. From the right source, used equipment can be great.
-
well my bow should be here in the morning.i dont think im going to sleep a wink.iv spent the last week pouring over articles online n the forum over at archerytalk.i think i found a good release that im going to trade my chronograph for,a scott wildcat.the guy i bought the bow from switched the mods to a 30 inch draw for me so thats takin care of.i talked to greg at whitetail plus n hes going to help me tune my timeing n check for cam lean n do some paper tuning with me once i get a rest.i dont think ive been this excited since i was a wee one waitin for x mas morning.
-
took my rig down to whittail plus today n hes going to tune it up,it was way out of timing.great guy there.i practically begged him to put a new string on n he talked me out of it n saved me 160 bucks.n then set me up with sights n a rest n a stab for 150 bucks n is gettin me to a half dozen eastons for another 50.its enden up alot cheaper than i thought n hes already taught me alot.im really freakin excited to get at it now.
