What's the best unit in washington where you can shoot more than just a spike with out havin to draw a special permit? Judges based off amount of area to hunt, herd size, and chances for success? West or east side doesn't matter. Go!
-
This is'nt the fishing forum. :chuckle:
-
I heard Deschutes has one of the highest success rates. :dunno:

133...

FWIW, that is an "Any Elk" Unit, Bull, Cow, or Calf. It is 99 44/100% private land too.
-
Hell...its any elk unit so there must be a ton of em :)
-
I'm not fishing just seeing if one exists. I tried north east wa for a couple seasons, saw very few elk, wondering if that's normal for all any bull or 3pt or better units.
-

Exactly what I was told- very few elk hunters, and TONS of elk. Thus, the high success rate.
-
564 is any elk as well... should be a great one...
-
The best is a Eastside unit called Idaho...it's where everyone will be going before long.
-
Moses Lake, best hunting and waterskiing in the state you can even drink the water? :yike:
-
sounds like someone drank to much of the water. SHHH

That is my favorite unit, I was huntin by Newport and started walking east and found elk!!! It was amazing!
-
get your camp sites quick, sounds like it might fill up pretty early
-
Actually the deschutes is no joke. My profile pic is one of them. Problem is there is very little public land to hunt. Military access huge advantage of base land as well. These elk are very smart and as soon as any pressure occurs they will head to privateland where they cannot be hunted. Last week I seen lead cow with collar. Game dep. is tired of people sneaking on to land after these elk. Many "poaching" incidents around yelm/rainier the past few years. Landowner permission will determine success rate. I dont deal with madness around here anymore. Winston is where you need to go! Lots of elk, lots of hunters.
-
This is an easy answer....c-post is where its at!
-
St. Helens herd for wet side..... NE corner if you can gain access or get very lucky on what public land there is...
-
Am I reading some of these post wrong, most sound sarcastic?
-
I don't see any sarcasm. Good honest people giving good honest advice to those who do not wish to hunt but instead have the hopes of others lining up a bull for them so they can squeeze the trigger and have their picture taken with monster bull which will be on the cover of their new book on how to bag the big one.
Basically Democrat's asking advise of Republicans

ding ding ding.. you win a prize... not a great prize, but a prize ... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

He has been around long enough to expect those answers...
But he "was not asking for your honey hole" or any specifics, just an opinion on the best unit.
I say looking at harvest reports, Winston.
Now if he wanted to hunt a less crowded unit...
The best one is the one I will be hunting.

NE corner gain access? there is millions of acres to hunt elk in NE corner that is public or timber co that is open to hunting

Hold the phone. I'm not asking for new spots to hunt or advise on where to go. I guess I should have made a poll or something. It was just for general discussion. I hunt east side Washington and Idaho and I know what to expect in our any bull units.
-
St Helen's herd has some good opportunity at branch bulls. Not a ton of real big ones but decent opportunity if.you.work for.it.
I second huntnnw on plenty of huntable land in ne.
-
Oh yeah there is a ton of land up there, plenty of room for a large huntable herd of elk ; ). Last I heard, moose outnumber elk now up there. I would like to see it turn into a better OTC area to hunt. Tired of the good areas only having 5 tags available.
-
Ah we're all just jerking your chain.. which season do you want to hunt?
-
Doesn't matter what season, just the unit in general.
Let me rephrase the question, any units in Washington that are similar to Idaho OTC tags?
-
Lewis and Packwood units have a ton of elk, but also a lot of steep rough ground...
Winston is a zoo, but if you are patient you can get into elk just about every day.. PLUS you have to deal with the jerks at Weyerhauser opening gates on a whim & letting trucks in after you hiked in 5 miles before daylight,,,, :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
I know guys that take bulls out of the Ryderwood every year as well... all I ever find of elk is tracks and crap in that unit...
Coweeman has good elk hunting, but like the Winston,
I hear some of the coastal units are pretty good, but never hunted them, so have no first hand knowledge...
-
Sounds like the west side has some of the better OTC opportunities in this state.
-
I saw lots of elk herding up last year on the summit of Mt. Rainer should be a great hunt! Go get em! :chuckle:
-

Not where the decent elk herds are... :chuckle:
-
My vote is rattlesnake mountain. Radioactive bulls are bigger! And you can have a long hunting season there.
-
But what you have to remember in Idaho you have 28 zones for elk.
-

yeah to hunt wolves
-
the best spot that I know well enough to get a nice bull on the east side is South Dakota ( I hope I get a tag this year)
but but either way I am going to hunt the west side after spending as much time as I can hiking around the mountains this summer scouting.
-
I like williams creek. A lot of elk but none are very big. Not sure how it was last year with hancock buying up some land in there. Any one have any experiences with this last year?
-
Since I didn't draw for the west side tag I was forced into Williams do to fire danger early archery season. I was on elk 3 out of the 4 days I was there! Their are some pigs out there in the usual deep thick cover! Most of the times ad your driving you will spot elk in almost every slough! Just get old the road and you'll get into them!
-

those must have been the same mt climbing elk we saw on top of mt st helens :chuckle:

RIGHT !!, NO ELK IN WILLIAMS CREEK !!
They are all in the Colockum !!
The few that are there are small, hardly worth shooting, and even though small, they are HEAVY, so if you do hunt there, you only want to hunt from the road, or just a short ways up behind the gates. :chuckle:
-
:chuckle:
-
oak creek game feeding station in JANUARY is a good bet :sry: (not realy)
-
Honestly though, if you want to consider all options, it is hard to beat the #1 unit in washington for total harvest, WINSTON !!
But if you wish to hunt away from the numbers, almost any unit in Western Washington can produce a legal animal, the hard work is figuring out where, even the regional biologist will not give me a straight answer to your question, and reccommends any area that will allow me to drive in for access, according to the one I talked to, access is directly related to opportunity, as Washington State has very few relative "limited access" areas, if you can drive the roads, you get poaching and Native Harvest, if you cannot drive the road, you get a better quality hunt, but fear that some tweaker is going to break into your vehicle, in Western Washington, camping is limited, so most hunters go elsewhere, both to have a decent "Camp" and more access.
If you want to hunt for "any legal" then pick a place with the most animals (again winston) but...
-
I agree - I think Winston is your best shot, especially if you go archery. My best day was 6 bulls 4 point or better within 200 yards during early archery. I took a 5x6 in 2003 and a 6x7 (my avatar) in 2004. I haven't hunted there since 2005 due to focusing on purebred Rosies out on the coast.
With Port Blakley closing their gates to motorized access a couple of years ago and no camping on either PB or Weyerhauser, there should still be good numbers of good bulls - possibly even better than before in some spots.
I found a honey hole down there in 2001. If things were not shut down for fire danger, it was nothing to be within 100 yards of over 200 elk during the course of the season, and to see at least one legal bull per day.
There are a lot of folks down there - rifle is crazy, archery is a little better. I found that once I was a mile in past where motorized access was possible, competioin seriously dropped off.
-
winston is good but i think ryderwood is alil less presured now an days...
also dont forget about all that country around p-el,ive only done about 60 miles on bike around there and already love it
-
Winston
-
:yeah: Lots of country and big bulls!
-
I dunno bout that Pe Ell thing. Hunted it years ago. Family there and it has gone to rat sheet. Small antlers/hoof rot/etc. I like it but nope. the 501lincoln. Fallriver better.
-
:yeah:
Plus we are unfriendly, and don't take kindly to outta towners. :chuckle:

too be honest i didnt even see an elk the whole time but it sure felt elky to me,decent size coutry+brushy+miles away from vehicals= big bulls :chuckle:..but il know for sure after a few bivy trips this summer...sory locals :tung:
-
On a serious note. If you are on Weyco property around Pe Ell you will have it all to yourself scouting, but opening day the employees will be driving all over.

i ran into a truck after doing close to thirteen miles one way last november :bash:
but im not planing on hunting it till 2015 so i go lots of time to scout for hidy holes
-
:chuckle: :chuckle:There is a reason you only saw one truck. No really man not that great an area. Elky? Yes.

OH Thats a good point. My family were employed by weyco and ya they had access behind gates and got multiple elk every year, another married into family is indian and has killed many, many elk but thats a different story. My point is its not near as good as it once was and a "big" bull is rare.
-
I think a "big" bull is rare any where on the west side; especially the farther you get from the PCT.
-
:yeah: I mean heavy animals with light horns. Dad has 3 winston 5x5s and they are monsters compared to Lincoln unit, just doesnt carry many bigger bulls. Genetics? Dunno, just my experience, never seen anything impressive killed out of there. I did call an elk to feed in farmers field years back! He took residence with cattle. I stopped and called Come boss and he was first animal up coming to eat. :chuckle: He came to fence with cows. Funny as h-ll. This was hunting season. Uncle told me farmer let young kid shoot em few days later. Stupid brush bull.
