If you guys could have one BIG gun mainly used for mule deer, elk and bear what would it be?
-300 WSM
-300 WM
-.308?
-.338 mag?
-
7MM RM :chuckle:
-
270 win
300 wsm
wsmnut
-
.338 Mag  is pretty much all I use when I do have a choice.
-
300wm
-
.338 wm is my go to gun for everything shoots almost as flat as my .270 and hit a hell of allot harder :twocents:
-
300 mag
-
Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter 44 mag
-
.338 Mag  is pretty much all I use when I do have a choice.
:yeah: Love my 338 been my main hunting rifle since I got one back in 08. Can't go wrong with it :twocents:
-
If you end up looking for a .338, I have one for sale. http://www.huntfishnw.com/index.php?topic=5275.msg55005#msg55005

.300 WM
-
.416 Rigby...Just in case.
-
If I could only have one rifle for everything  I have to go to my go to rifle, my pride and joy, the one that when it goes boom an animal is dead. My 30/30 mod.94

270win or 30-06.
-
300wm
-
7mm Remington Ultra mag, 300 RUM, or even better .338 RUM, the 300 has more factory ammo availiable
-
338 WM.... with 225 gr. Accubonds it shoots as flat as a 7mm mag with 175 gr. bullets and hits a hell of a lot harder.
-
.300wsm with 190 grain accubonds of the three . that being said a 30-378 would be the best bet . I'm building a 6.5 x 284 and have the confidence that the 140 vld will get the job done .
-
All of those rounds will do it. Sounds like you just want some justification so go huge
-
325WSM
-
Thankfully, a one gun rule does not exist. If it did my pick would be the versatile, flat shooting, light recoiling, light weight venerable .270 Win.
From the list 300mag
-
300 Win Mag :rockin:
-
Wsm are for hipsters, cutting edge my butt!
Gimme a 300 wm anyday and I'll knock down anything in north America within 600 yds. That's the go to gun.

Ya big tease!!! I about fell out of the chair, when I read "190 Accubond". Can't seam to find one anywhere? ;)
-
30-378 wby mag.
-
7MM RM
-
Geez...I thought you said a BIG gun....
.45-70
-
Big game, one choice, gotta go with my model 70, .308
-
300 RUM topped off with a Swarovski 4-12x50 Scope
-
300wm..I've been hunting with one for as long as I can remember and probably for a long time to come
-
My one gun for everything....
:chuckle:
300 win mag
-
Out of your list none can compare ballistically with the 300wsm.
-
my Rifle
-
I'd take the 300 WSM out of your list. If it was up to me though, I'd just get a 30-06 instead.
-
From your choices I would choose the 300 WinMag...

Whole lotta deer, bear and elk taken with the 30-06.

any one of them will do. but my gun isn't in the line up :chuckle:
-
Of your choices, 300 WSM. It is ballistically equivalent to the 300 Win Mag. It will do everything a .308 or 30-06 will do and more, but has more recoil and more expensive factory ammo.
-
300 WSM no doubt 8)
-
I like the 300 WSM and have jammed up several Mulies with one, but it's the younger kid on the block. The .300 Win Mag is time tested and has earned it's stripes. Give the cartridge the respect it deserves.  ;)
-
From your list 300WM
But I have allways wanted 300wby mag
-
Any of them from that list would work, I'd probably just stick with my new 300 RUM.
-
300wm
-
Hammer with your line up of fire arms I'd figure that they would make the 190 accubonds for you. A guy was telling me that they where loading the 30-378 up with 190's with real good results and I'm pretty sure he said they where accubonds may be i was wrong ?
-
I choose 12 gauge shotgun. The ONE gun for everything.
-
.300 win mag, just because i own one
-
Of your list....probably the 300WM.
I wouldn't however choose one of those on the list for my personal one gun. My one gun would either be my 7mm Rogue or 338 Edge. 7RM would be a good choice as well, but the 7mm Rogue adds another 150fps and seems to be pretty efficient with cheap brass. The Edge, well, it just flat out kills.
-
All of those rounds will do it. Sounds like you just want some justification so go huge
I wish more people (including 2 of my brothers) would spend the time they spend on the range vs researching ballistic charts and playing with all the different types of bullets, powders etc. If they would just by a 30-06 or a 7mm or even a 270, and spend their free time actually shooting it and being comfortable with it, they would have fantastic results. :twocents:
-
.300 Win Mag  As soon as I finish, refinishing, the walnut stock to swap out the "plastic" one.
-
Lazeroni warbird...just kiddding, 7mm RUM
-
A guy should NEVER limit himself to one gun for anything, but for elk I'd usually go with my 300 RUM.
-

+1. Given the choices I'd go .308. Keep your ammo cheap and your optics expensive and keep practicing.
-
30-06
find ammo dam near anywhere
I bet 99% of people with "big guns" can't shoot a 1/4 what the gun is capable of
-
300 WSM just because I don't have one and I want one!
I doubt too many deer, elk or bear would notice the difference between my WSM and my 30-06, but I'd feel good walking around with my new rifle!!!!
-
easy call. 300wm
-
One more vote for 300WM. Great results on everything I've shot with it....small game - AK moose.
-
7mm mag
-
30-06
-
.280 Rem. I love it, sold my 7 mag and .338. Kept the Mod 94 .356 winchester though.
-
hands down my 30-06!
-
I'd go 338 in any variant (Federal, '06, WM, RUM, etc). It's my favorite bore diameter. If you reload, it's much more versatile than many people think. One of the most accurate guns I own is a 338/375 Ruger pistol. It'll out shoot most rifles, give 338 WM ballistics from the 18" barrel, and it fits in a backpack!

Given the choice offered, rem 700 in 300wsm...that said, if i could choose one, and i sold it to a member and regret it, lol..that boring 30-06. nothing it can't do, with todays bullets, and increased speed, 165gr at 3000 fps. todays 30-06 is yesterdays 300 mag.
-
A blaser.
If i reload then a blaser with 3 barrels being 22hrnt, 7x64, and 9.3x62
If i dont reload then a blaser with 3 barels being 22lr, .270, and 338win.
-
264 Win Mag
-
If I could only keep one rifle in my safe it would be my 7 RM
-
300wsm accurate and a hell of a whop on the receiving end of it !
-
I would go with almost any .338 that is .338 Win Mag or up. You can get bullets ranging from 160 gr to 300 gr.
-
Guys, what are your thoughts in using a 264 win mag as an all around gun? I haven't taken it elk hunting yet, but I know guys use them. There are more bullets these days, and I shoot it a lot better than my 338 rum. Thinking about dumping the ultra mag and investing in a nice scope for the 264. Thoughts?
-
Love my .338 win mag, I have found myself the last few years only using this. A little overkill sometimes but dead is dead :twocents:
-
All your choices will work with good shot placement... That being said I carry my .300 WSM but would not and have not feel/felt undergunned with my .308
-
Elkinrut... reference your .264 Win Mag, an oldtimer friend I had killed more moose and elk with a .264 than I'll probably ever have a chance to see. It's a good round with the 140 grain load if you place your shots. It's kind of a classic round too which makes it interesting.
-
I couldn't live with just one gun. I don't even lime thinking about it.
-
338 win is my go to gun I've used it for marmots- elk

Great caliber, not easy to find.
Realistically, "if" I had to pick one caliber it would be one of the more popular calibers 30-06, 308, 7mm mag, 300 win mag for the main reason they all will do the job, and I could buy ammo at any hardware store/sporting goods store.
But since I do not have to choose one, I have at least one of each, then some, lol

30-06

7MM RM :chuckle:
A little late. But me too.
