Title: Price Check Please
Post by: Quimby on June 01, 2012, 03:42:38 PM
I am looking at getting my son,  who is 12.5 years old, a bow.  I know nothing about archery.  My neighbor, who is an avid archer, is selling his Browning Youth Micro Midas 3 for $200.00.  It's a 40lb draw.  Very trustworthy and honest folks.  Comes with Tru-glow sighs and quiver biscuit.  Has been restrung once and all looks good from what I can tell.  I've done a bit of homework and the prices vary.  Thoughts on this vs. adult bow and if it's a reasonable price or not.  Looking to the experts here!

Thanks

You can get a brand new Bear Apprentice II for $300 with everything included but the arrows. I adjusts from 20-60 lbs and the draw length adjusts from 15-28". I would seriously consider this bow if your son isn't going to grow up to be a huge guy. This bow will carry him through his teens.

Pianoman,

I saw that same bow and that is what got me thinking.  The neighbors is maxed out at 40lbs.  What is typical draw weight for an adult bow?  Is the draw weight dependent on what type of game you are hunting or is a constant depending on strength?  Thanks for the advice.  I was kinda of thinking that way, but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

 :yeah:

That bow will max out at the minimum needed to hunt big game. I would suggest you look elsewhere also.  He will probably out grow it before you know it and you'll be on the hunt for a new one.  :twocents:

I took on mentoring a local 9 year old last fall. We got him a Martin Tiger and he grew out of it in 3 months. We got him the apprentice and he'll be in this bow for a long time. Look around. I would suggest the apprentice II, but there may be others out there that do the same - grow with your boy's talent.

My son is going on his third bow now.  He can continue to use hs recurve, but hs compound maxed out this year when he grew four inches.  Go for growth.  My  :twocents:

Check out the mission line. They have a couple that are very adjustable. I got my 9 year old a menace and he will be able to use it until he is an adult. Its max is 72 pounds. And I can use it as a backup in a pinch. I have shot it and almost used it instead of my own bow last season.

What Pianoman said, that is a sweet bow and he will grow with it for a long time. Nothing like starting him with a good bow that he can learn from and shoot for many years. You can't go wrong with that Bear to get your youngster started off right.

While you're at it, might as well check out the Diamond Razor Edge....

I just got a Redhead Outdoors catalog, and was surprised at how adjustable this years bows are.

I just went thru the same dilemma with my 13 yr old son.  After looking at a lot of different bows and set-ups, I had to come to a decision and unfortunately for me - price was a large factor.  The conclusion that I made was that I didn't want to purchase another bow that he would grow out of in another two or three years.  The last couple of bows I have gotten him were not that bad, and of course money wasn't as tight, but it seemed like he was outgrowing them before he even got good use of them.
After all the research, it came down to two bows   Mission  - Craze  and the Bear - Outbreak.  Essentially the same bow, same options, etc etc.  The largest factor being their HUGE adjustability.  Both support teenage kids all the way through adulthood  15 - 70 lb window.   They are basically the same price and set up.  The boy ended up picking the Bear, said it felt better and more comfortable when shooting it.   So far, he loves it, and has been shooting it every day since.

My 16 year old step daughter shoots the Apprentice 2 and loves it. She is a smaller built female and it suits her just fine. I actually shoot the Mission Craze and enjoy shooting it. This will be my first year hunting archery.
