I've never hunted antelope in 68 before but i have been in 68 during hunting season and i saw plenty of antelope.Thats what my father in law said. He hunted his bird dogs all over that unit and knows it pretty well. Said he knows a few watering holes a guy can put up a blind. So I guess I'll see how it goes.

I know nothing about the idaho system but I have the option to buy Elk A and B tags does that mean anything?They have a lot of over the counter tags we can buy, the controlled hunts are just a bit more special. They used to sell out on over the counter tags in some units but not in a couple years.

I added up all the non resident tags that were left over last year..it was millions lost for the IDFG just in tag fees..not to include what the state of ID lost in revenue from these hunters buying stuff in their state from lodging,food and gasI have to believe most of the loss is from the wolves lowering the elk population. And just think of the land mass and numbers of elk they had compared to WA, the elk here will be devastated. I hunted unit 17 4 years ago and the backcountry is unbelieveable, but what really sucks was the very low number of elk we saw and the wolves we heard all around. That tag used to sell out very fast, it hasn't the past few years. With the wolf hunts now happening in Idaho, it will take a while but I think it will get much better.

My 0-fer is stil intact for Idaho! 15 years of applying for tags( tough odds) and nothing to show for it and I am supposedly in the resident pool since I have a lifetime hunting license I bought before I moved back to Wa. Maybe next year. Congrats to those who drew. nwhunterI can't believe you haven't drawn being in the resident pool??? My cousins draw almost every time they put in and they are residents, last year they had unit 11 elk and youth deer, year before that he had 11 deer, two years before that he had 18 elk and before that year he had 11 deer again. I assumed they drew residents all the time. You must have used up most your luck on drawing a great tag two years in a row here in WA. I drew the second year I put in for 18 elk so I thought it was gonna be easy, no dice, nothing since. At least you'll be in a great place come this elk season on the east side!!! If I can help with packn elk out let me know.

Trophyhunt,I really have no advise for that area, wish I did. We hunted more south by montpelier for deer a few years ago when the tag was still good. Didn't see any elk down that way, but there was way too much poaching going on and we never went back. I did like the looks of the area you will be going to though, best of luck to you and please let me know how it goes.

I got about a 280 6x6 on the 2nd morning...its a good hunt...but its not a gimme that's for sure. I saw you mentioned you had drawn it before...what did you think of it?
I drew the 2nd season rifle tag in 2009 and it was extremely tough finding a mature bull. I scouted 10 days in september to see what kind of potential there was and found 10 bulls over 300, and 2 bulls that I thought would go 340"+. This was in the middle of the rut and they were screaming! I was pumped...
Showed up 3 days before my opening day and scouted my ass off. Found over 300 elk with the biggest being a rag 3x4. Opening morning we found a nice 5x5 in a canyon by himself and I killed him. If I could have it back I would've passed on him because that was the first year that they upped the tags in the unit and the big bulls while tough to find, were still more plentiful then they are now. That first tag I would hunt again but wouldn't waste my time on the second season tag. Better OTC opportunities imho...

in an above mentioned unit that is so depleted people say..I saw a home vid of close to 90 different bulls and 5 harvested pics of big bulls and a 390+ that made it thru the season. alot dont put in the required effort in these units cause of terrain that is daunting
I would love to see that video! Was it all from a single season and how many of those bulls were 5 point +? I see sheds near every year that come out of there and there are still some big bulls in there, but there definitely is NOT the same amount there was even two years ago. I'm curious to see 2012's harvest data...

My dad drew Unit 50 November muzzleloader deer hunt. Anybody else draw that, this year or in the past?
I think he may of drawn 51, I don't think there is a muzzy draw in 50. There are some good bucks in 51 they are tough to find though.

Have any of you guys ever drawn the early deer tag for the Idaho Panhandle?
I drew the early Unit 1 tag in 2005. It is a great tag, scout hard and you have the possibility of killing a hog. I watched a 30-32" giant typical rub his velvet off and lick it of off the branches on opening morning of my hunt. He was about a 3/4 mile away with a bunch of other bucks. Went nocturnal after that. Didn't get to hunt it much as I was in the Navy at the time, but saw a lot of nice bucks. If you had the time to scout, you could find a giant and kill him opening moring. I believe that the tag includes unit 6 as well. Some good areas up above Avery.

Yep. You are right. Mistyped that one. I don't think he's holding out for a big one, per se. Just a nice 23-24" 4pt I think.
