I was headed out tonight on a couple mile trip, and I figured you've all been there. What did you forget while you were packing; only to get into the woods to find that your forgot xxxxxxxx.
-
Bow once, tags twice....... :bash:
-
Tags once :hello:
-
fuel canister on a bear hunt.. just cooked the old fashion way
-
My boots! :bash: No fun hunting pheasant in the palouse wearing running shoes in November!

My boots! :bash: No fun hunting pheasant in the palouse wearing running shoes in November!
I did that one as well..that sucked
-
I got on some bugling bulls in montana , only to realize that my release was back at the truck :bdid: Now i always put it around my bow when i am done
-
I forgot my muzzleloader and drove all the way to the trail head (3 hours) before realizing it...luckily my wife was willing to come early and bring it to me...
-
......................my girlfriend.
-
One time i drove over the mountains really late at night to meet some guys for a duck hunt at dark thirty. Well when i left i grabbed my one of many camo gun cases, shooting bag, waterfowl bag etc. When we arrived at our spot, I got all ready to go, waders on, jacket hat gloves etc. Slung my ammo bag over my shoulder unzipped my case and realized i brought my 410 insted of my Benelli 12ga :bash: :bash:
-
Better question is what haven't I forgot. Bear tag opening day of bear season, and yes I had a really nice blonde/cinamon come with in 50 yards. Ugh. Left all my black powder at home and only had enough for 1 shot. Passed up on a decent muley at about 40 yards.. list goes on. I've forgot tents, stoves, gas for the saw, sleeping bags. rain gear (while on the high hunt.) What can you do but laugh, and hopefully learn to slow down while packing :chuckle:
-
Toilet paper. I always forget that!
-
My hunting backpack. Tags and all :bash:
Now I take so much time double and triple checking its pretty much, impossible to forget anything.
-
I have hunt specific gear lists that have been laminated so I can check and double check items with a marker as I pack them and when I am all done I just wipe the marker off with a wetwipe (i have 2 kids I use wet wipes for everything). You name it I have forgotten it, hence the lists! I make lists of the lists I need to make! It is good therapy to keep the brain occupied before a big hunt! My wife says I'm borderline OCD.
-
the only things i've never forgotten are;
rifle/shotgun
rangefinder
bow/arrows/release
tags
my lucky hunting hat
everything else i've forgotten at least once,
on a deer hunt a few years ago i rushed out of the house after classes in shorts, sneakers and a safety orange roadwork shirt went to stalk some deer in a cut wheat field, i was bloody from the knees down didnt honestly think wheat stubble could be that sharp.
-
first trip in the wilderness with my brother and friend. Brother brought the tent, with no tent poles. Made it through the first night. Second night, freezing rain. Had to walk out 7 miles, half frozen, at 1am. No bueno
-
Sleeping bag on a weekend float trip on the Hoh early February...that sucked.
-
Forgot my wife in an outlet mall 732 miles from home...She found her way back tho. :dunno:
-
Forgot both clips for my rifle once. That turns a BAR into a really heavy single shot.
-
Forgot my bow last Elk season as I switched trucks at the last minute, figured oh well I will just bugle for my buddy. We got into a group of Elk and they were going off on us. My buddy snuck down the hill about 30yds to try and get a better lane to shoot down. Sure enough 3 spike bulls crossed 12yds from me and no bow. Hopefully that will never happen again. lol

This is a great thread. I forgot my fishing license one year while headed into the backcountry to fish some lakes. You never make that mistake again. I triple check my license and bow case before every trip.
-
Never been checked in high country lake fishing. LE pretty much stay to the roads
-
We have been checked once in the high country by a warden on a horse who was out for a ride.
-
Have left the GPS on the hood of the truck all day while out hunting.
-
I've left my release in the truck and hiked in 2 miles before I realized it. Last year, I forgot oil for the generator - bar oil is not a good substitute!
-
Forgot the tent poles a few years back when hunting near Winthrop. Had to sleep under an Easy-Up for the night. Thankfully it had walls, but man was it cold that night. Next day, ran into town and bought the first tent we could find. That night, burned two holes in the door flap from embers. THen to top it all off, we forgot to pack up the old tent when we left and didn't realize it until we got home back on the wetside. :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
Drove from bonney lake to perrygin lake with our tent trailer deer hunting and forgot the hand crank to raise it had to use a Mickey moused socket set to raise it
-
We were trying to cut weight for my fly in Brown bear hunt on Kodiak and left one of our bags of food behind.3 days into a ten 10 hunt we noticed we only had food for a couple more days but luckily my buddy was guiding just up the bay and he was able to send out a message back to town and I had food flown in on the next plane.
-
Got to deer/elk camp for the next 2 1/2 weeks a couple days early.... Got all set up and gathered wood.... While getting all my gear ready night before opener I couldn't find any ammo for my rifle..... :bash: After hours of cursing and searching I finally located 2 rounds.... One was in my sleepiong bag.... :o One under the seat of my truck..... The deer only needed one....
-
I have forgot lots of small stuff over the years. Nothing ever to crazy, did leave my release at the truck one time. I had only made it about 1/2 mile.
-
Why would you think that I would EVER forget my camera.......?
-
food....twice..
two days ago on the tail end of a three day trip i was livn off power gelz..
-
Years ago my hunting partner brought a new guy to camp, who wanted to try bowhunting. I personally saw him "forget" to knock an arrow before he drew and shot at a whitetail buck.
-
My Broadheads :bash: :bash:
-
I fogot the wifes cow permit one year! Drove back home in the middle of the night just to find out I had put it in the back of my wallet so I we wouldn't forget it :bash: :bash: :bash:
-
My release a couple times
-
I've field dressed too many animals with my broadheads. Now I have knives stashed everywhere. And yet I still forget one on occation. Thinking about making a velcro sheath so I always have one attached to the bow.
-
Plenty of room on the top limb for a knive and velcro sheath....... :chuckle:

wow :yike: never had to do that and hopefully never will! sounds dangerous. i have always had at least 2or 3 knives when hunting anything. my dad always laughs at me when i take my pack out and i have 4 different knives, but it is better to be safe than sorry...
-
I forgot my GPS once...not that big of a deal compared to forgetting my sleeping bag. Laid next to the fire and a bottle of whiskey. It was a scout trip so it was just for one night. Not too bad. I did however manage to wake up with huge blisters on one of my forearms (somehow got burnt laying so close to the fire). I won't forget my sleeping bag again. Great lessons to learn.
-
Knife.
Went in solo for a few days to look for woodland caribou in the Kenai mountains. Easy tag to get, very few notch the tag. Spent a day and half of traversing ridgelines and realizing I was a bit foolish, thinking one man team could succeed without dying of exhaustion. So, returned to the valley floor and spent the night in a nice warm cabin. Woke up early next AM and spotted a black bear on the hillside grazing. Three hours later I was above and down wind of him. While mentally planning the final stalk to get within shooting range, it occurred to me that the hurried exit from camp caused my only blade to be left behind.
Turned out OK, took the opportunity to do a "dry run" or photo shoot stalk!
The breeze was pretty steady and the bear moved into some tall grass. Finally got close enough to see the blackflies swarming around his snout. Wasn't a particularly big (old/ wise/experienced) bear, likely that is what allowed me to get so close, pretty darn exciting.
-
didn't forget it but "discovered" while in the ID mountains that I had no jack & a flat tire, my son & I walked 6 miles to camp to get our other vehicle & a jack.
-
My release a couple times
I've done this. One morning, my hunting partner decided to sleep in (*censored*). I was pissed as I'd already waited half an hour for him to get up. Grabbed my stuff in a huff. Drove up to a gated logging road and hiked in two+ miles. Sat down, took off my pack got all set and no release. If I was pissed before,... I ended up going back to the truck and road hunting for a couple of hours to cool off. We packed up after the morning hunt that day.
-
Gosh, over the years it seems every thing at least once. The most memorable are. My boots, got to elk camp, foot plus of snow and all I had where sneakers. My hunting license, several times. My release, a few times. Food at least once. All I can say is at least I am not alone in being absent minded.
-
I have forgotten some minor items, but one year a member in my group forgot his arrows.

This year, my dad called me from the mountain. He just had dropped his branched antler bull. I said give me 2 hours. Grabbed my pack and a few items and ran out the door. I was wearing my crocs. I got all the way there and realized that I left my boots sitting in the driveway! That sucked. I ended up packing out that elk with a pair of rubber boots that were 1.5 sizes too big.
-
forgot cots for the wall tent
forgot tp too many times.....many times have come home with a shirt with no sleeves. This year sleeveless shirt from prior years stayed in the mountains. :chuckle:
forgot many other items over the year, but getting better at not leaving stuff behind. but my pack is getting heavier.
-
Oh yeah...the ole cut the sleeve off the shirt. Seen that one many of times. My wife actually asked me what was happening to all the sleaves on my shirt once..she never asked that question again..lol :chuckle:
-
The best one was my actually my buddy. We were all heading over to camp the day before the season opened, we had already setup the wall tent the weekend before and we just taking the last odds and ends for me and motorhomes for them. We were all meeting in CleElum for breakfast. Well one guy that I was driving with got a late start and we showed up to breakfast 20 minutes late. After bunch of ribbing from our buddy who was on time, he said no worries I am just giving you the business, I forgot my boots at home and have to wait for the wife to get here with them. We proceed to give him a little guff back about forgetting his boots and then say well the real reason we were late was that we had to fill the water storage tank in the motorhome. "AH $#^!" from the guy with no boots, he forgot to fill his motorhome. Then my buddy says I was going to fill the water tank when I got back from buying my license and just forgot, "AH $#^!" again from the guy with no boots. After giving us the business for being 20 minutes late he heard about it all week that he was "on time" but with no boots, no hunting license and no water. After breakfast we headed to camp while he waited for his boots to arrive and then he went and got his licensed and filled his motorhome water tank.
-
Release, all but one arrow, ammo for my rifle. Etc.
-
A spare sight.
10 miles into the Washakie wilderness and busted the pins off my G5 XR2. Had no backup sight so had to make crosshairs out of bailing twine and drill holes into the cheap magnesium housing to secure it. I've got pics of it somewhere
Found it
-
TP....leaves hurt.
-
On backpacking trips/hunts, I always forget eating utensils. I've eaten many a Mountain House meal with a makeshift wooden paddle for a spoon.
-
:yeah: done that twice now, had to use my leatherman flat blade and a stick to eat, worked but remembering to grab acouple of plastic spoons at safeway would have been waaaaay better.
-
My aim a few times
-
My rain poncho during the old late elk muzzy hunt at Trout Lake.
I was hunting alone because my partner hadn't shown up. Parked my rig and shot a bearing in the direction I intended to hunt in so I could just shoot a back bearing if needed( prior to GPS ). There was about 4 inches of snow on the ground and leaving easy to retrace tracks so off I went. Not so groovy. It started raining hard and wiped out the snow and the brad crumb tracks of mine. When I got out my compass to shoot a back azimuth the needle just spun to and fro. Now I'm soaked and starting to lose body heat, and didn't pay close enough to my surroundings.
I obviously made it back and didn't become coyote food. Come to find out I was standing in an area with a bunch of volcanic sink holes that had a real high iron content causing the compass to malfunction. When I finally got to my rig I could barely get my keys out of my pocket. It could be that even more than the poncho I forgot my common sense on that one.
-
Forgot wallet. Had to have wife wire money so I could buy gas to get home. :chuckle: Was lucky I was in Hood River during the day when I got low on gas.
-
Went to Colfaxto to go Pheasant hunting and my Cousin forgot his shotgun!
Well Grandpa step in a buys him a new 1100.I was wishing I had forgot my gun
Needless to say about 3 months later he left his new gun leaning against the trailhead gate On Slater road........Never to be seen again.
I almost have to leave before I know what I forgot.

A spare sight.

Did it work!
-
Don't remember what I have forgotten on trips but do know that I have never forgotten mountain money. :o
-
OMG This is good:
12 year old first year with dad (early 60s)
Coffee cups
paper plates
And I got WTF no Spam
As I got older
A varmint hunt in E-WA no bolt for the gun
A deer trip to MT again no bolt
Now my check off list is longer than the Gettysburg Address
But I always have TP because I've been told I'm full of sh&#.
-
I seem to keep forgetting where the bears are located :dunno: :chuckle:
-
Knife, twice. Discovered it when I was leaving camp, so grabbed a (ghitsu) knife that was in the camper. Shot a decent 4x5 Muley, and boned the whole deer out with that cheap serrated ghitsu. It was long, but worked ok. 2nd instance was when I discovered I only had a cheap multi tool after downing a bull 3 miles from the truck. Ended up boning that out with a dull blade.
-
My bottle of Jack Daniels :brew: YES ! For after hunting :dunno: :chuckle:
-
On a weeklong elk trip with my grandpa I forgot my coffee once (he doesnt drink coffee). Made for some long mornings and I drank more hot cocoa than I care to remember.
When I was pretty young my dad took me camping and ended up forgetting the sleeping bags. I thought we would have to cancel the trip but some improvisation and things turned out all right. Turns out canvas tarps arent the most comfortable blankets but they keep you warm enough.
