My dad drew a muzzleloader cow tag for in there.  Sounds like a decent hunt, we are excited to check it out.

Big question now is, will the gate be open or closed? See you in there...

You will get vehicle access permits to drive in behind the gates during the hunt only.  In the fall you get a packet of paperwork to fill out to get your access permit. You only get to drive in during the hunt dates, so any scouting will be walk/bike only.  It is a pretty good hunt not what it used to be as the late tags have really thinned out the herds but if you put your time in you will get one.

This is home turf for me. I've logged a lot of miles in that area over the last 20 years or so, and taken a lot of meat, mostly deer. Definitely not the elk numbers in there that there used to be. I attribute it to the lack of tall timber. It will be nice to drive in the areas I always had to hike to before. 50 tags is a lot though. And that's just modern late hunt.

I had put my son in for that tag the last couple years and he was never drawn.  I had always seen the harvest reports and the success has always been really high.  But this year in the regs I noticed they marked that hunt with a "C"...and the regs definition for that "C" is.... "private lands, access is extremely limited.  If you cannon secure access to private lands, do not apply for these hunts."  I was wondering what changed because that hunts we never marked with a "C" before this year.  So I didn't put my son in for it this year.  Anyone know why they added that this year?

They will give us the combo to the gate.  I spend a lot of time in there during and out of season.  Last year I was in there the whole time during those late hunts on foot.  No shortage of Elk so we should all do good, my wife will get her Cow but I'll probably eat my Cow tag because I drew a Bull permit as well.

Oh yeah, bring cable!  Some of those draws in there are pretty steep.

Curious, have you ever seen a big cat in there? I saw tracks in the snow several years ago, but only the once.

last year my buddy seen one coming out on the mainline at night, and another guy off here I met up there while I was scouting during his dads muzzy season, we exchanged info and the next day he pm'd me his dad missed one with the muzzleloader.  I've cut its tracks in the snow also, but i have never seen it or caught it on cam.  I really want to give it a dirt nap though, I'm sure its taking a toll on the deer in there.
