Never hunted here before and i know there is big bucks there, but was wondering if i could get some help.. please and thx
-
Asking for help mearly hours after they were posted, i love it. :chuckle:
Dont worry i will be there too, i drew dayton archery. Good luck to you my friend.
-
might as well start getting some scouting done too... might head over soon :)
-
Go talk to Sam at the Shell station just past Mar Don. He is the local with the know how. Put me on deer when I drew the tag.
-
u get a nice one? pic?
-
hang out at the mor don bar, the locals are helpful. the real locals after the summer rush
-
k so basically need to do some door knocking...
-
No, but i scared the hell out of a dandy and saw several that would make your knees weak. If ya see a wide 28" ish 3x3 with a divot out of its left side let me know
-
lol i will let yeah know
-
no need to knock on doors, there is lots of public land. the local duck hunters are very helpful on where they saw the 28- 32in buck. hunters want to see hunters be sucessful thats what i got out of it couple years ago. get over there and hit the dunes for some scouting, then hit the watering hole
-
will do
-
Try the C-post honey hole 8)
-
I could probably hook you up with a local there with some access depending on if he's around at the time. last year we had some big bucks locked down but couldn't find any hunters to.come lay a sneak on em. oh well. coyote hunting out there is an excellent way to gain access to good spots on private ground as well as learn the country and spot potential shooters cause there are some wide ol monsters out there.
-
There is TONS of public land... the hard part is trying to hunt them in cattails 8 ft tall! :yike: I've seen lots of bruisers..They like to hang out in public land at the edge of crop fields... Usually the crop fields are leased by hunt clubs... The trick is getting access to the public land and finding a way to get between the deer and the field. I highly recommend some summer/spring camping to get the area scouted out. :twocents:
-
That would be cool... I will be heading over soon to check it out
-
Lets go soon and scout! I seen a dandy a couple weeks ago when I was over there. I didn't get drawn so ill be over there with ya.
-
Good luck!! Sounds like a great hunt! Looks like i pulled the modern second deer (doe) hunt in december in the Desert unit. I havent hunted there and looking forward to learning the area. If anyone has tips on hunting the unit in december I am all ears!
-
I start work the 12th but I have weekends off so I'm down... I also have to scout alkali bull for my dad

Hahahahahaha

December desert doe tag breakdown.
Set alarm for 8:00 am. Hit snooze till 10 am. Check out of hotel, you wont be back. Miss breakfast at Mcdonalds by 2 minutes and get pissed cause they wont serve you. Go to Bobs and eat way more breakfast than you bargained for at the same price as Mcdonalds and have a nice conversation with waitress. Hit up Tri State at noon and BS a while (dont buy anything becuase their prices are too high), Hit up a quicky mart and grab a few snacks for the road. Drive out Dodson road around 2:00. Spot a doe or 20 off Rd 4 and substation. Look around and make sure no one comming. Roll down window. Second guess that. Get out of truck and lean on fence post. Shoot doe at 50 yards. Back truck into ditch. Load doe whole and hit the road back to Seattle by 3:00 in time to hit 5:00 rush hour and sit there longer than your whole hunt was today. Home with deer skinned and hanging just in time to catch 8:00 Sports Center.
Now that made me laugh out loud!!
-
BECAUSE ITS TRUE!
-
Yeah doe tag will be easy
-
good luck on that alki tag , it will be tough. stick to your desert tag !
-
pm sent

Well I only have the desert tag since my dad has the alkali bull :)

I drew it last year. Can help if you promise not to brag about how good you are at calling mule deer. :tung:
I passed on a big 2x2 first day and 3 other smaller bucks during the week. Then the fog came in for the week making visibility around 50 yds most of the day. I had quite a few stalks but making closer than a 100 yds was tough. You're hunting deer post rut that have just hunted by rifle hunters. Also quite a few stalks ruined by other hunters cutting me off. Saw guys that drew tags bring groups of their buddies to help them hunt so expect crowds out there. Last year the full moon occurred during the hunt so most larger bucks were noctournal.
I did see some huge bucks though and was able to get within 40 yds or so of two monster bucks standing in 6 to 7 ft tall sage. Was not able to make an ethical shot so passed. Most successful method I found was just sitting on escape areas where the other hunters pushed deer, using someone else to make slow drives to push them out of bedding areas (sage, bitter brush, catails) and hope to catch them leaving their areas. Or can lay on top dunes at first light and spot deer which for me with a bow was least successful. This method would work good with a rifle. They are ultra sensitive to noise out there and sound carries a long way. Stalking is tough
Brought out a tree stand and did not find it to be of much use but really did not put much time into exploring the treestand method. Sat on edge of alfalpha but deer came out too late because of full moon. Not successful for me.
Find private ground now before season. Start knocking on doors
Expect to put in 4-6 miles a day minimum hiking
That's my experience with the unit.

Sounds right to me. Wastickslinger, you should not have given up the RD 4 substation as a hot spot. I though I was the only one that knew about it! Now everyone will hunt there when drawn! :chuckle:

I would suggest any place off of dodson road and head east towards potholes. I think we have seen deer anyplace we've gone in. The tough part with a bow is getting close enough. Not the easiest place to get within bow range. One thing to remember is that it seems like when jumped they get out out of sight over one dune and then stop and settle down. good luck.

I heard that they respond to elk bugles :dunno:

Billfold comments like that aren't going to get you anywhere!

I spent a week straight there with 2 friends who drew rifle tags last year. Feel like we hunted almost the entire unit and I know it fairly well now.
1. scout EVERY single day that you can
2. knock on doors and get #'s
3. don't get discouraged if you don't see a lot of deer during scouting, you will probably only see them right as it gets light and right before dark
4. Spend the $$ and get the most quiet, best sage camo that you can afford. It will not be easy to get within bow range.
Good luck.

Hmmmmm
-
I'm really looking forward to the results of these two tags. Both have odds stacked against them, but when you're good, I guess you're good. We'll see. :)

...the best there is... just ask him!
I was in the same.place as you when I first found this site. First posts were asking for help on a permit. A lot of guys on here have good information and are willing to share but we all want you to contribute your knowledge as well. Stick around this site is actually a wealth of information and entertainment... besides what is life without poking some fun online to wind people up?
Good luck and I hope.you guys fill.your tags!

They were serious. The deer out there respond to bugles, as well as duck and goose calls. I would pick whichever of the three you are the best at and have at it!

Wow you are quite the character

Here's one from the Desert Unit west of Moses Lake southside of I-90.
-
You guys are all to funny.
-
That's a shooter in that unit. Nice pic camp

I saw 3 in total together. I honestly thought they were elk. My little camera doesn't do it justice. It was a monster as were all 3.
-
I would be out there now before it gets real hot.

Drew the rifle doe tag in '03. It took me 'til last light of day 1, but I'm a looser. :chuckle: For archery I would not expect any cakewalk tame deer opportunity. It's very much a tough hunt for an archer to get close enough in that terrain. Practice being sneaky.
I have hunted ducks there for over 20 seasons. ~Seen most deer over the years in the Sand Lakes area , take C street north off Hwy 262 (that's the hwy that runs to Mardon) it crosses Frenchman Wastway and the Sand or Harris lakes are offshoots of Winchester ww.. ~Second most deer over the years in the willow forests off the N. end of the Potholes...take any access roads in from the I90 frontage road. Job Corp dike area.
Stop in at Mardon this summer and talk to one of the Mesebergs...they're always very helpful.
If you're gonna go out now watch out for ticks! Just say'n. GPS'n places you want to hunt into now is a great idea for those foggy winter mornings. Bring a compass for back up.....just say'n #2 LOL
-
If you had a doe tag for mulies i would use a fawn in distress call... I can honestly tell you i have called in WAY more pissed does than coyotes doing this. :chuckle:

Game calling egos aside, this is sound advise. Advise I would only give verbally.
-
I have never had a tag out there but a buddy drew a late rifle doe tag out there last year. We had about six inches of VERY frozen snow (that lasted through archery season). We couldn't get within 350yds of a deer no matter how hard we tried! CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH!!!!!!!! We finally set up on a big sage flat and I started wailing on a fawn distress and had 3 big fatty's come a running! Also just a side note but the whole time we were out there my gps arrow just spun in circles! Luckily you won't have any significant land marks to navigate by so that will help! You won't have any shortage of deer action thats for sure.
-
yeah going to be a tough one

??????? Funny how some people think PM's or 'verbally' is somehow more of a way of keeping something hush hush than open posting. People talk to people no matter how they learn it. So what.
To the OP, another secret spot is behind the state park. There's a real decent herd that comes out of the park and crosses the steet to feed in the alfalfa field. If you could pattern that herd and find out if they are bedding on legal land you might be able to ambush them. It's a good bunch about 20-30 deer last time I saw them.

Funny how some people think word of mouth is going to be spoken to the 7 billion people that have access to the world wide web.
Everyone has there own way of doing things.

Why would it matter? How many tags are issued for that area? 22 for modern 29 for archery, 3 muzz
All Hunters get Quality hunt tags and there are only 54 tags for the whole season... Its a fairly big area when the largest number of hunters at one time is less than 30. :twocents:
-
I don't think we'll have to worry about 7 billion people being remotely interested in hunting in this state....it's just not that good. Shhhh it's a secret. LOL
-
I drew the archery tag last year and had to deal with all that crunch snow. Terrible conditions for stalking. Saw a few monster deer, ate my tag. Had a great time though. And my GPS failed me also. Always pointing in the wrong direction. Boogered me up in thick fog. I thought my gps had broke, so I chucked it into the sage. Maybe I should have kept it and checked it somewhere else.

Glockster, Special T, you guys make some valid points, and I believe I understand your view on posting hunting areas without a PM or face to face due to limited access/ low permit umbers. Its not what I would do, we differ.
-
Notce I don't say much about any open General area...
I know a duck hunting guide that builds nice duck blinds NEAR where he takes clients. He usually built them before the good spot, or somewhere that improved his hunting. He said "If you Build it, they will come!" Time and experience are the only ways to get really good in an area. :twocents:
-
It's called the Toilet Bowl blind. Put the turds in it and shoot somewhere cleaner. LOL
Special, I think we may know some of the same old duck hunters of that area. When I used to duck hunt there a lot, crowd management was our first priority.
Now that everyone can apply for everything without worry of burning points, it will be about one in 7 billion odds to draw even doe permits in this state. (oh and then you get to pay another $60 ha ha....they're laughing all the way to the bank!) I certainly don't mind helping a fellow hunter who was lucky enough to draw one of these "quality hunts". LOL

This is my second time getting drawn in this unit. What I have learned is to sit high, with some shooting lanes and be patient. Passed on some small bucks and ended up eating my tag. And another thing. Don't leave your vehicle for more than an hour. Someone smashed my window in and took all my gear. Drove to Moses Lake without a window to get it fixed. Good luck.....
