Title: Phelps Bugle Tube
Post by: JPhelps on June 08, 2012, 10:18:06 PM
A couple dozen of these showed up at the door the other day.  I have modified over a dozen of them already and am excited with the sound I'm getting.  I will have a sound file and finished pictures soon.

I'll have a finished picture soon. In the process (actually grandma is) of sewing covers for the tube.

I'm cutting them to length, drilling a hole in the end, adding some strategically place rubber, and putting on a cover.

I messed around with a dozen different designs (hole sizes, porting with rubber gromets, inverted tubes, different lengths, different brands of bats, etc...) as well as field testing them the last few years.  This is the BEST sounding combo I could come up with.  I will be taking this tube to the RMEF elk calling championships in Vegas.

The backpressure in this tube is awesome and makes it easier to run the diaphragms as well as the added resonance on the low notes.

Not Yet  :sry:

I delayed production because I had a couple more tweaks I wanted made.  I know it sucks because they were supposed to be out by now, but I owe it to my customers to make sure they are right before you/they spend their $$$.

That calling was done with one of my prototypes.

This is from the Contest Post
WORKFLOW:

I went ahead and did this two different ways:

1)I made a video and then transferred it to YouTube.  You can than use many online converters to convert the Youtube video to an .mp3 (google search).  What you can do is enter in the letters pwn right after the www. when watching the video and hit enter.  This will take you to a screen where all the available converters that YouTube supports are.  I used OnlineConverter.  Otherwise you can go to google and search for "youtube to mp3 converter" and use one of your choice.

2)I also used a program called Free Video Converter.  Here, you can convert any video to an .mp3 directly (It must be downloaded to your computer though).

I also advise that everyone uses a 256 kbps transfer to make sure that they are getting the highest audio quality.  Then just email me the .mp3 file with your name and user name attached.

Just went and picked up the cover from Grandma. :dunno:  I need to lengthen the cover by 1.5" on the big end and tie on the 550 paracord strap and it will be ready to roll.

The design is all about back pressure which makes it easier to operate the reed and to transition up and down the vocal scale of a bull bugle.  This was prototype #3 and I made it to #12 before I decided it wouldn't get any better than this.

This tube sounds GOOD!

Got the length of the cover figured out.  My daughter wanted to help model the bugle (well at least my wife thought she did). :dunno:

Now just need to tie the 550 cord on.
