There are moose in all the areas mentioned in the other Selkirk topic and in older topics from previous years. Wait for a good one there are some dandy's in there.

So I drew this OIL any moose tag for Selkirk for this year. I start the nonstop map reading and researching for this OIL Hunt. I noticed that I am moving closer and closer to the computer screen. I figure that my eyesight is getting a little worse and it might be a good time to go to my opthamologist and get my eyes checked and update my glasses, if needed. Turns out I have cataracts in both eyes! 2 surgeries later and I am good to go. I had the cataract surgeries and my eyes are a lot better.
However, now I learn that something happaned and the retina in one of my eyes needs to be repaired. So, how about another surgery on my eye? Sure, why not? However, as part of the surgery, there will be some air or inert gas inserted into my eye to help hold the retina in place while it heals. While it is in my eye, I cannot fly or travel above 2,000 feet in elevation and it may take 1 or 2 weeks or months to be absorbed by my body. During this time, I need to position my body so that my nose is pointed at the ground so that the bubble can float up and press against the retina. In essence, I have to lie on my belly, face down for 2 weeks! CRAP!!! No scouting. No looking at maps. No reading about moose. I did rent a massage table so I can at least lie down flat and watch a TV I placed under the table so I can watch some moose hunting videos. No summer vacation up in the mountains camping, fishing, or scouting for moose. WWWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!! :'(
-
Bummer
At least you could read the maps while laying in that position.
Best of luck with your healing process.
-
Dude- you've been busy!! Glad you have that table/tv/book think figured out though!! :chuckle:
Get better and let me know if you come over this way. I could point you to a couple places worth a look.
-
Congrats on the great tag, keep us informed of your progress.
-
Good luck on a speedy recovery moose are great but eyes are better.
-
I got a moose tag for the Selkirk and was wondering when i should start scouting? an also interested in killing a black bear as part of my scouting, any black bear in that country?

Tons of bear in that area. Be careful, there are grizzly as well.

The doctor cleared me to go over the mountains. My eyes are getting better every day. We went scouting about 2 weeks ago. 90 + degrees over there, even up at 6,000 feet. We saw some fresh moose tracks but did not see any moose. This was expected considering how hot it was all week. We did find a nice 4x4 mule deer and some whitetail does. Also, a lot of bear scat on the road. We found a lot of Huckeberries and picked enough for a few pies.
We found a lot of great looking moose country. However, it was so hot that all animals must have been in the shade on the north side of the mountains down in some deep canyon with a cold creek running nearby. There were a lot of grouse on the roads. We did a little bit of fishing and caught some nice rainbow trout.
The best part was relaxing around the campfire at night with my wife and two sons. An ocassional adult beverage around the camp fire after a great dinner was all that I needed! Hopefully, I can get over and do some more scouting in September before the season starts on the first of October.

how many points did it take?
-
I was very lucky - only 12 points to get this OIL tag.

I heard the guy with the raffle tag is tryin to get one out before the rest of you get a chance (how selfish is that)

Lots of big bulls to go around sleep should be hard to come by now for tagholders
-
I have seen pictures and one side of the sheds what would be the new world record. That bull lives in that unit. I bet the gov tag is chasing that bull.

Weather report over there for the next 10 days is mid 80s during the day and upper 30s at night. We probably will not even see a moose in that heat!
