I was just wondering how other hunters have done on this hunt, I did a search and haven't found many success stories. I see the Natives hunt the crap out of it, but I'm sure they don't get them all. A buddies son drew this hunt a couple years back and I told him he needed to buy a key, but he didn't and his boy ate the tag. A Native told them when they were up there that there are some big Bulls in there, I'd like to see a pic of one of those. Also I'll be calling Monday to see how to go about being able to get in and scout if they allow access. Just curious what to expect as far as quality of the Elk in this unit. Thanks in advance Ty.

You don't need a key. Get a map and learn the unit before wasting the gas driving up there. The only part of the unit that the key will help with is Hancock's land.
There will be Native hunters, but they are too lazy to get off the road. Get in the woods and you will get into elk!
-
NAtives have wiped them out all over the state because it's owed to them to kill whatever they want
I have to disagree with you there. I spent approximately 45 days in that unit 2 years ago and only witnessed the Natives harvesting bulls. I never seen any of them take a cow or calf. On the average day we would see 50 or more elk, so there are still a lot of elk in there. Be prepared to put some miles on your boots!

Thanks, I was reading your thread from when you drew the tag, how did you end up doing?
-
Yeah the natives have by no means, wiped them all out. There are plenty of elk in that unit. It's probably not like it used to be, but I had the permit last year and had a good experience. Anywhere you can drive, you can expect to see native hunters. If it requires hiking, no worries.
-
What about high in the unit bordering the pacific crest trail. I've always thought it would be awesome in there.

Ty Just follow me im on a lucky streak I feel a 300 inch rosi in the making :chuckle:

I drew that tag last year, I saw lots of branched bulls in there, nothing hug but some mature bulls. I will send you a pm.
-
do you still have to buy that dumb permit from wearhouser to get in there? i know i my spelling is off on that one. but last time i went in there a long time ago you had to buy the permit and it was around 75-100 bucks.

You have to buy a hancock permit now, it's about 175 or so. That's only if you hunt on there land, you can hunt forest service land all you want. I would hit the high country, that place used to be my home before it went to permit only. It would be the 2nd best draw on the west side if it wasn't for the mucks and the 10 other tribes that rape that area. Good luck, there are some big ones in there.
-
yahh i also grew up on grass mtn, hunting the edge of the green river watershed. there was some big bulls up there back in the day.
-
What weapon??
-
Go up FS road 73 near the seed orchard. I know there are plenty of elk in there. I put in for this tag for muzzy.
-
What weapon??
Sorry I forgot to post that, I drew the modern tag.
-
Thank you guys for the info.

Good luck on the hunt, I mounted a 320 bull my buddy shot up there in 07. nice and wide!!

I really hope you'll get a chance to do another one Charlie.

My dad shot a 340 6x7 close to there last year, we saw one cross the river and 410, made his look little.

Ya know, most of the INDIAN crap you hear isn't true. I'd say most of the WHITE GUY crap you hear is true. Bash me because I don't care because it's the truth !!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't imagine what the Natives do up there is any worse than what goes on in the Winston during the general seasons, and if a guy works hard at it you can still pull Bulls out of there every year. I can't speak for what goes on up there, but I know what goes on in the Winston. Last thing I want is this thread turning into Native bashing, the Natives I've met off here seem to be upstanding guys.
-
I'd really consider getting a Hancock key. That time of year you may have to hunt lower due to the weather. I'd hate for the season to get here along with the snow and then not have that hancock option. :twocents:
-
:yeah: Archery or Muzzy I would not be terribly concerned about the Hancock permit, but would prolly do it anyway just cuz....Its a rare tag, put as many things in your favor as possible. If hunting Modern season definitley consider it. :twocents:
-
I drew the tag 4 years ago (archery) and pulled it off again this year. Livin' in the Claw this is my backyard. Four years ago had one of my best hunts ever, including Idaho in the mix. Yes, pressure from treaty hunters. Thats OK. I got of the roads and had excellent results, as this would be the case in most areas with treaty rights or not. There is a pile of bulls in here and can't wait till August when they start to light up!!!! Layin' in a tent, in a bag with bulls keeping you up all night..........can't get much better. Remember what Dwight said years ago.....loneliness is a oppurtunity! Come on August.
-
I will get the pass, I want to have all angles covered. Thanks for the advice guys, and congrats on your draw Scrotus.
-
You don't need the key. My bro killed a decent bull off 73 rd. it all depends on the snow!
-
Great tag to have if you put in your homework.. ;)

I had the tag last year, and the night before the season, the game warden closed the gate at the bottom of the 73. Kind of ruined that spot. It's a long way to the top if you are on foot.
-
They didnt close the 73 off of the 75 and that puts you pretty much at the top. Are you sure it was the 73. They did gate the 7315, But that was the only spot
-
They also closed the 7160 road (Buck Creek), the day before the season opened last year. I know that is a long way to the top on foot also.
-
You guys are right, it was Buck Creek, not the 73.
-
They always close buck creek before the rifle season, but there are better areas that don't get closed. And to the guys that think the tribes don't rape the elk up there, I don't think you have a clue. I do have a clue, everyone that knows that area well knows what the truth is. I've gave many examples in the past on this forum and even talked about it with someone on here that is a muckleshoot and he was surprised what I knew. Yes, the white guys are not perfect, but the 11 tribes that hunt that unit kill a lot of elk and yes they do kill more than the non natives. Not trying to jack your thread but I can't stand it when guys think all the tribe bashing is bs, some of it is true. Good luck on your hunt, if the natives killed only as much as the non natives that unit would be second best on the west side.
-
well ladies there are lots and lots of bulls all over the white river unit and as a matter of fact there are more elk in the white river area now than ever b4 i dont much care for the natives but they have done a hell of alot more for the white river herd than our state ever has last yr alone they spent more than a million dollars on research and enhancing land for elk do some real research and youll find out yourselves not just heresay but if you go scout the area youll find good bulls everywhere and i would get a key i have killed many bulls in that area and would give advice if asked
-
Tag holder and helpers of the tag holder needing a place to stay for scouting or hunting purposes for this white river tag I have a cabin near Corral pass (close to last cabin). It's a rustic yet comfy cabin that's been drying out hunters for years. Don't know if this is applicable but thought I'd throw it out there. I'd love to tag along but not gonna require it. PM me for details/pics and what you're thinking if interested??? Congrats on tag!

If you don't know where Corral pass is, the USFS road to get up there is just after Alta Crystal Resort (usfs rd # is slipping my mind). Another reference is the cabin is about 1 mile from the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort. The USFS rd to the cabin is off hwy 410. Another reference is it's a couple miles past buck creek bridge....
Either way, cabin is off hwy 410 3/4 of a mile. You may have elk on the driveway????
-
*1 mile from the Crystal Mountain Ski Resort TURN-OFF***
-
for those of you that have the tag dblung has a great spot right in the middle of elk elk even at the cabin
-
The cabin has been in my family for nearly 60yrs...back in the day we had 3 generations (gramps, dad, me & brothers) hunting from the cabin. We had chances @ nice bulls just walking out of the cabin. Very few people up there at that time too. Cabin on creek...always nice to listen while falling asleep after long day in field.

How long you been hunting around there? My stepdads father died up there in 1977 chasing an Elk he shot. My brother shot his first deer up there as well. I hunted several years for deer and Elk never conected because of point restrictions on Elk and could never get close to deer. Very cool country up there

Last time I hunted up there I think I was 11. I'm the youngest of the brothers. My grandad & father hunted up their for years. My grandad passed in 92' hunting elk up there also (weird-pm his name my dad may know him). It was the best place for him to rest. We now hunt on the eastside. I wish we could hunt their during general, it sure would be back to "good ol days".
Good luck to all the tag holders!

Thanks for the info db, I sent a pm.

FS 70- 72 and some of the offshoots....

No disrespect to your family, but let's just hope I dont die up there chasing Elk. Can't think of a better way to go, but I'm still young and not ready. :chuckle:

No worries :)

Thats funny. No disrespect taken. My grandad smoked since he was practily walking and never went to the doctor even when it was well needed. My dad used to give my grandad crap for it, but now my dad is doing the same (minus the smoking). I've broken the spell by getting checkups often.

Man, where were you last year when I was looking for a place to stay :bash:

thanks for the encouragement Lewy, I sure hope so. This is how I came up with the name, it started as a joke. My brothers and I joke and give eachother crap about who's the better hunter all the time. Especially my older brother who I tell if he just watched me he might learn something, or maybe he should touch my gun before he goes out and he might kill something, stuff like that :chuckle: finally one day I just told them I'm kinda like the god of hunting, so after the Greek goddess of hunting Artemis, I came up with Arteman the male version, kinda corny but I rolled with it. :chuckle:
-
And now the god of hunting is on HW asking for advice, Lmao go figure. :chuckle:
-
Nice!!!! :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: I always kind of wondered how you came up with the name.
