I drew a 49' unit Moose tag. I am wondering if anyone would be willing to share any information they could. Please PM me if you want to keep the spot/area between us. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
-
You will have no problems getting a moose.... Pm me
-
I have seen some big moose on the actual ski resort. There is a road that take you all the way to the top of 49 that I would check out.
-
Soooooooo, I'm stoked for this hunt.... My dads going with me, doesnt hunt anymore (73), but enjoys getting out and taught me all I know. He always wanted to go on a moose hunt, so I guess this is for both of us... I want to thank those who have PM'd me with some great info, I will be in touch with all of you, and hope that everyone on this site gets to enjoy this as much as I've enjoyed sharing your hunts. About me....well, I hope to shoot a P&Y bull on film, so I have some lofty goals but think they can be met. I will do my best to keep a good log for everyone throughout this adventure!!!!!! Sean

congtat,s on the draw, just wondering how many points did you have?

Nice moose!! I want that tag someday...
-
I can't wait to hear your story! I am in a similar position! My dad (71) and his LONG time friend (76) and hunting buddy applied as a group for the 65 or older cow tags and they were lucky enough to get the only 2 for that same area! They are so excited to have the chance at a moose of any kind....they sound like kids again when they talk about it! I am trying to gather as much info for them as well and hope to tag along and film the hunt. They are both disabled hunters and can only hike a small distance. I feel like the parent excited for their kid to shoot something....I'm sure like my dad has felt about me in the past....I can't wait!
-
Congradulations, that is great! I'm sure that we will run into each other and share scouting stories!

If you need a hand I can put you on a couple of moose that waoud be easy to get to.

Talked to the Biologist today, very helpful, said the unit is a Moose factory.....Thanks again to those who have PM'd me, I really appreciate it....Excited for my 1st rad trip over there....Hopefully I can seal the deal with my bow....
-
Flowery trail road toward the ski resort. Lots of old clear cuts up there.
-
So, who knows the magic way to tell a good scoring Moose? My goal is to get a P&Y bull.
Here's what I've gathered..3 brow tines & good paddles, what other things do I look for? How wide are their ears, is that a good way to tell what the spread is?

If you've never seen one in real life, you'll know when you see a big one. I've seen some really big ones and small ones. Here's an example of your moose you'll wanna kill this year.
-
So, not knowing....approx how big is that bull? wide? are those good paddles? What approx would it score, just a guess, since you can't see the fronts..?
-
I also drew the 49' tag. PM sent

I've seen 25 moose around here and this was by my judgement, probably in the 52 inch range. He was really a nice bull. I would of shot him in a hearbeat. Here's a couple more to maybe compare sizes. You'll have to look real hard to see what I'm talikng about.
-
Here's a 49' moose from the last time I was up in that area. That place is thick with moose, and I would really get familiar with what it has to offer before getting trigger happy. This was an "ok" moose with single brows...definitely would get passed on unless it was near the very end. There are some unique bulls up there.
-
Campmeat, the picts are great. In the bottom pict, the bull of the left side of the pict is the one that looks good to me..... Hard to tell the 1st pict...
-
Miles, that one looks pretty desent to me, but what do I know...lol
-
The "twins" should be bigger by now. This was from 2009.
-
Miles, that one looks pretty desent to me, but what do I know...lol
It is a good moose, but wouldn't score all that high. Depends on what you're looking for... He's got single brows, and long tines that make him look bigger. Up close the combo of his body size and long tines would get quite a few people to pull the trigger.

all these pictures of moose are gonna give me sleepless nights waiting for the season to open!!! cant wait

:chuckle: Here's some from a neighboring unit. This moose thought he was in love and looking for a date...

Ya know, any moose no matter what, will be a trophy. You're one lucky fella is all I gotsta say. Maybe be picky for a day or two, but don't eat your OIL tag for a record wall hanger, I wouldn't. Go with what you feel is your choice and nobody elses.
-
I couldn't agree more about them all being trophy's itll be hard to be patient and especially hard to pass on ok bulls looking for MR. right. coach is gonna have to hold my arrows and keep me from arrowing the first decent one we encounter....
-
There are a lot of moose out there. I called in 4 different bulls and pass on them before I shot mine. And I shot him on day 4. After I got him down I had shooters remorse. Don't get me wrong he's a good bull 43" but I knew there were bigger out there. And to boot I could have arrowed him but I gun hunted. :bash: Get some calling video's they love to fight and come right in. Careful w/the cow calls, I had a bulls coming in one morning w/bull grunts. I started to give some cow calls to fire him up and his cow started to wine and he turned and went off w/her before I could get a look at him.
-
Avoid these.........moose fever
-
thanks for the tips PA BEN good info can not wait for a pissed off bull coming in to kick someones azz iots got me chomping at the bit, got any recommendation on videos???
-
Great advise everyone, it's going to be long summer waiting for Oct 1... :chuckle: Im like elkoholic1...I've already had some sleepless nights just thinking about it...
-
Should be a fun post to watch, 3 any moose tags & 2 cow tags for that unit.... Keep the advice coming, cant get enough of it...although my better half is already tired of hearing about it and watching youtube moose videos.... :chuckle:
-
i've regularly seen moose between miles 6&10 on Tacoma creek rd. You just can't hunt north of the road because of the survival school. I personally have seen 3 different bulls that were easily over 40". two of which i saw at the same time.
-
Thanks for all the info everyone, I appreciate it and Im sure the others do as well. I have a notebook started with your notes in it. I wont go unused once I get there...
-
I will be over there with my grandson he has an any moose tag. Any advise will be appreciated and hope it will be an awesome hunt to all that drew hope we get to meet some of the hunters over there
-
Dr:
Congrats on the tag.
I look forward to reading your story and looking at the pics.
Make it a dream hunt!
Bryan
-
Thanks Bryan, I will do my best with the hunt and to keep everyone updated on things! I've got lots a good info from many on the site, there are some great people on here...Thanks everyone, you know who you are!

When I had my tag I would wake up at 3am and couldn't sleep so I would go over my maps.
-
The reality is all moose look big to those who aren't used to seeing them, I also think given 4 to 5 days to hunt most guys should be able to find a really nice bull if they have self control, now if they want to dump a little one for tender eats that's another story.
-
I took the 1st 2 weeks off, soooooooo I hopefully will find a good one
I've youtubed every moose thing available I think, hunting, calling etc...any suggestions on others stuff to watch, study or read...?
-
patience and self control 101!! :chuckle:

Here's what I've gathered..3 brow tines & good paddles, what other things do I look for? How wide are their ears, is that a good way to tell what the spread is?
Shiras will be about 6"-8" across the top of the scull between the peds, you can use this to help gauge the width of the paddles. A good paddle will go 10", they are measured across the back toward the middle and into the web of the points. The points on each paddle are only counted as 1 point each regardless of length. Each point must be longer than its base width at the paddle or it does not count.
Length of the paddle is where a good score is made or lost. If the rack only has single brows you will lose several inches in length, so a double brow paddle will score much better than a single brow paddle. The length is measured at the top of the paddle but in the bottom of the web between the points, not at the tip of the top points. Basically picture the paddle with all the points cut off, that is how they are measured.
-
elkoholic1- like someone else said, let someone else carry your arrows.....
Great info huntnphool, this all really helps me figuring this out, only 101 days but whos counting......
-
Seen some really good moose today along the southeastern edge of the unit. Got one small bull on camera last week.
-
I have the disease bad....I find myself going "UGHHHH UGHHHH UGHHHH" as I walk out to shoot my bow, my 14 & 15 year olds just shake their head and wife gives me the distgusted look....my 2 year old is the only one who gets it, and he answers me too! :chuckle:
-
Now that's funny! :chuckle: Hope you don't have anyone close by and live out in the country. Who knows what people would think when they hear UGHHH UGHHH UGHHH in the back yard ROFLOL
-
There is an older lady here in town that drew a disabled cow tag for 49 Degrees North. She has helped our local sportsman's group alot over the years and some of our members are going to help her try to get her moose. She doesn't get around very well as she is over eighty years old. Been watching this thread and have looked at other older threads. If anyone could help please PM me and I,ll get the info to them.
Thanks!
-
Here are the DVD's I used to learn to call the one is old but very good info.
"Love, Thunder & BULL"
"Love, Thunder & BULL 2 I think this one is the best of the two.
"MOOSE MANA" BULLS GONE WILD 1 This is from Archerschoice. She shoots a moose at about 10yds compleat pass through the heart and the bull keeps walking w/blood hosing out. Way cool.
The BOOK I bought from Amazon is "A Boone and Crockett Club Field Guide to Measuring and Judging Big Game". This book gives good tips on field judging game animals.
-
Thanks PA Ben...so here's my next question....I'm 5 miles behind a gate with a dead bull, whats the best way to break one down? I've done it many times before with dead bull elk, but I know a Moose is just a tad bigger....
Usually I bone them out and just pack meat...I can do a elk pretty fast by myself...same with a moose?
Thoughts ? Suggestions?
-
Same as elk, just a lot more. Better have a buddy or two with you. ;)
-
Make friends now.... as my uncle has always said when hunting Alaska. "Moose hunting is a lot of fun right up to the point you pull the trigger/loose the arrow."
-
Same as elk, just a lot more. Better have a buddy or two with you. ;)
:yeah:
6 to 8 meat sacks. I got 482 lbs of boned out meat, not counting the cape and head.
-
Got the meat sacks, 8 reusable ones and 8 of the light ones...
Finally started shooting my new bow (Rytera XT), my shoulder is doing great. As many of you read in the bowhunting forum I had shoulder surgery in April. Shooting it at 60 lbs now and will be at hunting weight (70) by Aug 1, so things are coming together...I'm stoked!
-
Hope we see you over there one thing we found is that it takes a while to break one down and the bags work great. Last year in Idaho while we were working on our animal the yellow jackets would;nt leave us alone and some small gnats I don;t know what a person could do but they were sure a problem. We had a big insulated tote with ice we put our sacks of meat on that worked I don;t know how the weather is there but getting that much meat cooled down is important. We will camp someplace so maybe we can compare notes over there we are excited too.
-
Buckhorn2, Im sure we'll run into you guys at some point.... I'll post when we are headed that way for our 1st scouting trip for all who are interested....
-
What kind of camping facilities are in the area ( dry camping/sites with hookups)? Where are they located? Is there a place a person can store a trailer between scouting trips and hunting? Am thinking I would combine a scouting trip with a bear hunt in early September, leave the trailer, and return the first of October for the moose hunt. Any and all info would be appreciated. Things to do to get ready and time is going by fast.
-
I cant say I ever seen one 49 feet long :chuckle: 8)
-
=Moose Hunting is sooo fun!!! You guys are gunna have a hoot!! Im gettin pumped just reading this thread!! Come on huntin season! lol
-
I saw there was a trailer park right at chewehla. sp
-
I saw there was a trailer park right at chewehla. sp
There is a camp ground at the park in town and lots of primative camping spots up in the hills closer to the hunting. the weather is a crap shoot that time of year but usually still warm.

Here's my advice (in no certain order):
Take a bottle of vinegar and a container of black pepper along. Sprinkle the vinegar all over the moose when you begin gutting, and then occasionally as you go. Rub a little on your arms, hat, etc. Sprinkle the black pepper all around as well. The bees (all types) will completely leave you alone. I killed my moose on an 80 degree day, the woods was alive with bees by 8am. He dropped a very short distance from a basketball sized hornet nest. The bees were swarming all over the gutpile and the river of blood that poured out, but they left me and the moose alone.
Take friends. Lots of friends. When you walk up on the downed moose, you'll understand why everyone (who has been there) will tell you that. There will be some ITG's who will boast about hiking in 10 miles with only a snickers bar in their pack, and how they can pack a moose to the truck in a few hours. The packing is hard work, but the bigger issue is getting the meat to the cooler before it spoils. If you can get the quarters bagged and hung in the shade, tha tmay buy you some time, but that in itself could be an issue if you kill the moose in the middle of a huge clear cut. Take friends. Lots of friends!
Get into shape. Really good shape. Start now! If you do, you'll be glad you did when it's "go time". If you don't... well...
Take lots of pics, and savor the moments. The time between now and opening day is as much a part of the experience as actually hunting. And regardless of if you kill your moose on the first, or last day, it will be over way too soon!
Good luck to all moose hunters this season!
-
Will get some black pepper and vinegar thanks for the advise Hyde the yellow jackets just would;nt leave us alone so sure will give this a try. thanks
-
Hyde, thanks for the advice. Vinegar and black pepper just went on the shopping list.
-
WE'LL SEE YOU THERE ! :yeah: My brother in law and I have been applying for moose/sheep/goat since 1987.... We FINALLY got the 49 degree north unit... I still cannot believe we got tags!. Will check this thread out, and appreciate the advice as well!
-
Congratulations on your moose draw! You'll have an experience you'll never forget. All the advice here has been great. I've been lucky enough to take a few bull moose and a few cows over the past 25+ years. To score a B&C/P&Y moose your best measurements are palms. Your look for long and wide, and need to really have a 40-45" wide rack with split brow tines. Without split tines, it's VERY hard to book. As for dealing with the animal, it's like a horse down. My last bull was close to 600 lbs of bone-less meat. It was an all day task for 3 guys. Here's a picture of my Okanagan bull moose from 2009.

Nice looking bull threedwizard!!

We've been using Liquid Game Bag on elk and bear for years. Works like a charm at keeping flies and bees at bay.

-
Threedwizard, Wow. that is one beautiful beast.... and betting tasty too! Never had moose, but hear it is the best. What firearm is that? A Browning stalker? I have the option to use anything. Bow, flintlock smoothbore, TC rifled bored muzzleloader, modern... I'll probably take all, but am not too proud to pull out the 7mag and get it done, especially with an OIL tag. Hell, may be an excuse to get that 300 win mag I have been eying . I commend Dr.Death for both starting this thread, and having a bold plan to get a monster with a bow. Good luck in dealing out the death Doctor.
-
49 is a great area and you will be in moose. wait for a big one. you only get one in your life make it count

Damn ...thats a fine bull right their now ..... :yike: congrats !!!
-
WOW! Awesome bull  What did he score?
BTKR, thanks for the info on the liquid game bag, I'll check it out for sure..
-
Thanks guys, the funny thing was that was the only bull that would come to our calling, and he brought a girlfriend with him. We spotted some little spikers, but that was the first mature bull. My gun is a Sako AV in .340 Weatherby. That bull grossed 164 6/8 B&C, he also has a 9" drop tine of the left palm. He's 51 1/2" wide and his palms are 34" long and 10 1/2" wide. To both you bull hunters, remember any bull moose taken is a trophy, regardless of size. Don't pass up a nice wall bull looking for something that may not be up there. Good luck to both of you!
-
Right on! Will take that advice. I have limited wall space, so freezer takes precedence. But since it is OIL, I will be spending about 2-3 weeks on this hunt. If a big boy comes the first day ,its down. If not, I have a some time to get it done right. Anyway, I am hoping to get some info on the area so I can focus on that during the scout trips. It is a BIG area to check out every nook and cranny.
-
Well, I finally finished my PT for my shoulder last night, woo-hoo! Got the clean bill of health from them, bow is now at 70 and I shot 100+ arrows through it last night and a few this morning prior to coming to work and all is good. 30 minutes of crossfit daily, stairs at lunch with 40# pack ( I also wear it to and from work when walking in). 2.5-3 mile jog each night or hike with 50 lb pack. Things are coming together and I feel great. Cant freakin wait for Oct 1st!
-
So stoked that I started shooting broadheads tonight :chuckle: changed to shuttle t's this year and they fly awesome, shot out to 50 and they were side by side with my field tips. Will check them out at 60-80 tomorrow ....
-
nice! have to check out those heads. I've been running and basically dealing with tons of stuff around the house that leaves me sweating and sore, so it must be good. Going on a scout trip end of August (our anniversary, I got a cool wife). Will let you know how that goes. I heard it is a better hunt if there is some winter weather (not too much). I am digging the summer, but I will be fine with an early cold....
-
Got my permit in the mail this weekend! Woo-Hoo! now it really seems real, just have to buy my tag !
-
Scouters, Don't be discouraged when you go and don't see a bunch of moose in the summer. They are there, but likely laying low in a cool creek bottom. When you start getting that sinking feeling that there are no moose anywhere... remember that in October, things will be WAY different. In October, the rut will overcome their urge to lay low, even on sweltering days.
Get some movies and learn how to grunt. Forget the cow calls like they do in Canada and Alaska. Everyone kept telling me that it wouldn't be a matter of IF you get a good bull. It is a matter of WHICH bull you are willing to hold out for. That was good advice!
Now get back out there and run another 2 miles!
-
2 miles down... many to go.. Even cutting back on the Moose Drool :'( Thanks for the encouraging words. I kinda expected that August will be a lay of the land type scout trip. I'll grab the fly pole for some stream fishing while there. I ahve gone down Sand Canyon road a couple years back and camped on a lookout west of I think it was called Kalispell peak or something like that. So any areas to hone in on would be appreciated. PM me.
-
All is good with my equipment  been shooting out to and mostly at 80 yards and holding a 8" group, sure makes the closer distances seems easy..... even impressed my 15 year old, and thats hard to do since he knows everything! :chuckle: Oct 1st cant get here soon enough!
-
As to camping, think I would get in touch with 49 north and see about camping tin the parking lot. Haven't been there in a few years but they might even have hookups. That way you can be on top and have an EZ carry back to camp up hill all the way. The last time there the roads were all open so a down hill or side hill pack could be done. HAve good hunts you lucky turds.
LEN
-
LEN, thanks for the info, will check with them
-
Great idea Len....PAW let me know what you find out.....I'll be staying at a friends house about 5 miles N of Chewelah...I'll see if they have rooms for a few rigs, if someone needs a place to put one.
-
I am in an Amazon Architecture class right now. One of my attendee's of the class is from Spokane. He was showing me pictures of moose after moose in his back yard. He lives in a development that backs up to the mount Spokane. Nothing big but lots of moose.
-
Just received my Moose license and transport tag from the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Another step closer
-
i also just recieved my tag and permitt now its not a dream i actually have my tag in my hand .. woooo hoooo :IBCOOL:
-
Mine is secured under lock and key :IBCOOL:
And to add to my luck this year, my wife and I scored on Antelope tags in a east region of Montana. There were 5 or so given out, and 2 are in our grubby little hands......
-
It is for real. I got my tag in the mail.
-
62 days, but whos counting..... :chuckle:
-
Seems like a long time doesn't it? I'm counting down 52 days to my mountain goat/Canadian Moose hunt, so I know how you all feel. Can't wait to see your pictures!!
-
That's an awesome bull!!
-

Awesome! What outfitter are you going with?
-
Tag is now in my grubby paws! WOO-HOO! Definately feels very real now like everyone else said..
-
Thanks, I be hunting with Fredlund Guide Service in Northern BC up past Fort Nelson for 12 days. Driving up so I can bring back all my meat. :)
-
So, here's another question for you all....thoughts on best place to take a Moose to get cut and wrapped ?......not going to do this at home..
-
I do a lot of business with thick n' thin meats in priest river, about 10 minutes from Newport. They have done me right a ton as well as my hunting partner and his family. I know they do a lot of Moose as well. I stop by every weekend just to say hello. Very good people.
-
Hey does anyone know if its cool to run quads on the roads in this unit? Are some roads green dotted?
-
Hey does anyone know if its cool to run quads on the roads in this unit? Are some roads green dotted?
Depends on the area you are in, Inland Empire land is gated and no vehicle access in most of it.
-
If you are hunting USFS, you need a forest use map, it shows which parts of which roads quads are allowed on, there aren't many of them. Contact Colville National Forest.
-
Thanks. I plan on avoiding the gated to start with, but I di have a bicycle. Also will have a dual sport with for those "license required" areas. thanks for the NF suggestion.
-
FYI: Here is the Colville NF site with the use maps:

So, here's another question for you all....thoughts on best place to take a Moose to get cut and wrapped ?......not going to do this at home..
Smokey Ridge Meats just South of Chewelah
-
Ditto on Smokey ridge. excellent stuff. usually get a side of beef butchered there. awesome.
-
I ran mine into Smokey Ridge and they let me hang it for real cheap in their cooler until I left. It's a nice clean place.
-
Thanks for the info on lockers & Smokey Ridge Meats...Sounds like a good place...
Only 46 days but who's counting..... :chuckle:

Decided not to do a early pre season scouting trip and save the gas money...but it would be more beneficial to get there 4-5 days early and do my scouting then...good or bad idea? :dunno:
-
Decided not to do a early pre season scouting trip and save the gas money...but it would be more beneficial to get there 4-5 days early and do my scouting then...good or bad idea? :dunno:
How long are you planning on staying up there?
-
Planning on 4-5 days early and then the 1st two weeks for starters....I have the leave from work to stay longer if needed or I can come back later in the season when the leaves are gone and the snows starts to fly... I really want to get a P&Y bull...
-
4 or 5 days early is a good plan. One trip to recon the area before that might be a good idea even if it's a redeye weekend. By the opener you should have an idea of a specific bull or 2 to try for. Don't wish for the time to go too fast it will be over too soon.
-
personally i would arrive 1-2 days early and stay longer when the season is open. why scout before season when you can scout and hunt at the same time? there are plenty of moose around and people will help out. swing in at Whitetail plus in deer park and start talking to people if you hav any trouble finding moose plenty of people will offer help.
-
Early is not a good plan with moose..they can travel over mountain ranges in hours!! this isnt sarcastic.. I have watched moose chase cows across mountains and so far away u woulda had to drive to find them! Now if we could hunt them Sept 1st then u could locate a bull and u have a serious shot at getting him..the rut really causes these moose to travel. If you cant find moose in 49 your not out :chuckle:
-
So, who knows the magic way to tell a good scoring Moose? My goal is to get a P&Y bull.
Here's what I've gathered..3 brow tines & good paddles, what other things do I look for? How wide are their ears, is that a good way to tell what the spread is?
If you've never seen one in real life, you'll know when you see a big one. I've seen some really big ones and small ones. Here's an example of your moose you'll wanna kill this year.
that is not a moose u wanna kill..the paddles look to be 5" wide..a big one will be 11" plus..the bull I got was 13" wide

Thanks for the info guys it will all help Im sure...I really want to thank everyone for such great info and help. This site is awesome!

35 DAYS WOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOO
-
just got back from the scout trip, more to learn the road system. The maps suck..... On the NF maps, some look like roads (306 for example), but are single track motorcycle trails. It also is REAL brushy in a lot of places. The area is huge, the huntable area is less. Still TONS of land there... TONS. but there are miles of area that you cannot see 20 yards into. IMO, I would go check it out to learn the area.... One surprise I did have (unrelated to moose), I saw a mountain goat at Calispell Peak summit. That was neat.
-
Well it sounds like Ill be filming part of your hunt in Oct if needed
-
huntnw, PM'd you........
-
Just got back on the site so am late to comment. I had the tag 2 years ago and would be happy to share everything I know. PM me if you still are looking for info. There are a lot of moose so don't be in a hurry to shoot unless you know it is a monster. It only gets better later in the season when there is snow and no leaves. They are huge, way bigger than a bull elk. You will need help just to cut it up let aone get it out. It is going to be a blast.
-
Bull Elk out out of the way, and saved a week of leave.... :chuckle:...now I can really focus on Moose...
-
Bull Elk out out of the way, and saved a week of leave.... :chuckle:...now I can really focus on Moose...
unless you like to camp you should not need the full week ;)
-
Good luck DR Death (Sean) ....
You should go up for some early fall turkey hunting with Lil Buck (maybe early morning and late evening) and then socut the area for moose in between --- just saying Lil Buck seemed pretty excited for you and your hunt this morning on the way to work.
I'ld go but have too many other irons in the fire ... love the area and the people though.
-
Let's do it! :chuckle:
-
heading out for a power scout trip this weekend. Will be interesting to see if they have started rutting.....
-
Look forward to hearing your updates about the rut starting....
-
Alittle over a week till I leave......sleeping is getting harder and harder to get....mind is going a mile a minute going through things.. I think I have a good plan and good areas to check out, but you always second guess yourself. I have got some great info from people on this site...Thank you all for that!
-
Some more info candy for you. It is DRY as a bone over there, BUT there are good creeks running. So the water is in areas that look moosey. Ran into one of the many dozens of woodcutters in teh area. He said he has seen a large congragation of bulls just south of Davis lake. I did not have time to check it out, but he was very excited to tell me about that. (nice folk up there)... I did get a bull to respond to a cow call. Never saw him (deep dark timber), but he was wuh'ing at about 3 second intervals, then bolted. Probably smelt me. Good luck and may the meat be glorious.
-
Good luck to you guys. The moose are just starting to get interested in cow calls here. One good cold snap and it's on. I'll be goat and moose hunting this time next week too. Long ass drive 1st!
-
Thanks!. Getting all the meat haulers I have lined up to learn about calling too.... Two have never hunted, but are so interested in it, they are getting the bug for sure. Fun to watch them grow from the uneducated, to fired up guys eager to learn the ways.... admission fee is hauling 200 lbs of meat... .that simple :).
-
No worries you will see moose everyday..I was in 49deg north sunday..no rut activity to speak of or rubs really showing ..that should change in about 5 days or so. This weather is horrible! showing 91 thru sunday here
-
so what can we expect to see in spokane north boys ? Anyone been messing around in there ? I'm going to pack mule for my buddy on the 1st.
-
So we need some help......Im part of Martin Outdoors also, and everyone who could possibly film already has hunts planned for the 1st few day of October, till Shane can get up there on Thursday the 4th. We are looking for a camera (1920x1080 HD) and cameraman. I do have lodging. Please PM me if interested. Thanks, Sean
-
To bad I didn't know earlier I coulda came up for all of it . I'll keep looking around .
-
I wish all of our resources werent already commited to other hunts or options b,c,d and e fell through.
Any one willing to be part of this hunt and help out by running a camera the first few days until Shane can arrive, I will hook you up with a custom call package (elk, turkey, predator or any combination up to $150).
Not to mention if the footage and hunt turns out you may just get to watch your work on T.V. I want to stress we are just regular hunters who have a passion for trying to capture our hunts on video.
If you are interested let me, Dr death or Shane know and we can get you the details.
-
so what can we expect to see in spokane north boys ? Anyone been messing around in there ? I'm going to pack mule for my buddy on the 1st.
they are goin in north spokane seein a couple bulls a day, lots of rubs
-
I wish I could help, but I don't have a camera like that.
-
anyone interested in filming?
-
Hey Dr death. I think you can rent some decent camera equipment from electronics places. Maybe you could rent for a week before Shane can get up there and you could do Nome self filming. If I had more time I would commandier Shane's camera and head up to film... but I'm in Olympia for work that week.

So had one of the oddest days ever.... started the day almost getting a shot a a nice 4x whitetail, just didnt hold still long enough. Soon after found a great swampy area that we see some guys grouse hunting near, they tell us about a bull they heard and that we needed to checkout where they just came from...so we do, of course bring NO weapons as they just hunted through there..Im walking down this trail at the bottom of a select timber pocket along a creek, i hear sometthing and look up, to see a cougar walking along with me....WTF! I slowly back up and head for the truck and WEAPONS...of course he never to be seem again...we leave for a different area...driving down the dirt road and I look up and see something moving in the road up ahead....It's 2 corsican rams fighting.....Im thinking what the heck, and film them and drive off...I dont get far and send/get a few text's back, that I need to go smoke them as they shouldnt be out in the wild.... go back and cant find them now...ugh...end up seeing a small bull, tonight maybe 30", hear another thats sounds big, get a bull elk going so it was a good night, but wierd day.....Not quite how I thought my moose hunt would start... :chuckle:
-
Sounds like a heck of a day. Be careful of shooting the rams. More then likely someone livestock that got out of a pen. You can get into a world of trouble shooting someone stock. Just because they get out does not mean you can shoot them. We had a problem with that around here and it was not pretty for the guys that did the shooting.
-
Sweet, sounds like good action.. Oh and never leave the rig without a weapon. Never know when that 60 incher will show up ....
-
sounds like an awesome day to me death!!
-
Tired feet and legs tonight....saw 3 bulls today....2 good ones, and one dink 4x4 who walked right up the road to us, until I waved at him at 10 yards.. :chuckle: He just looked at us and stood there staring at the camera and then meandered off the road grunting away. Lots of learning road systems and new areas....good times!
-
GOOD LUCK Sean!! Thanks for the updates. I am super excited for you, and really enjoy your daily updates. Keep us posted on your cow sightings, if you have the chance do me a favor and tie one up to a tree for me, we are headed over on the 26th.
Blake
-
Great morning...saw the one I want and some others....more to come... :chuckle:
-
This is it...will be a sleepless night Im sure.....8 bulls seens today, 4 looked to be shooters in my eyes, 1 huge one that I'll dream about tonight and hopefully see tomorrow got some great video of him. Witnessed 2 big ones fighting, and called in a smaller one to 10 yards got on video... I wish the everyone else good luck also...Sean
-
Good luck.
-
good luck on getting some rest! if you need to relax come down on the Usk side of the mtn & get some hot-tub time @ the Camas center for Community Wellness where I work, nominal fee for day pass. I have tomorrow off & taking my daughter to her orthodontist but if you get the BIG one and need help, I'm game.
-

thats incorrect...I saw a fallow deer in a falfa field one day..called fish and game she said shoot it!!
-
Trust me I know the laws. The fallow deer is a exotic. A Corsican ram is a hair sheep and is considered live stock not a exotic. Plenty of people raise them as livestock such as myself. If you see one of my sheep out and you shoot it it is the same thing as shooting livestock. A deer is way different, trust me.
-
i saw a nice bull up at ruby creek last month
-
Gotta be getting close to pulling the trigger hope it's a great day for you!
-
Just talk to Sean.. hes on his way up..sounds like the big bull he saw is a toad and should have a great chance at seeing him today..the bull was cowed up.
-
Good luck today S.T. .... Little Buck and I have our fingers crossed (and toes too) !
-
Passed up at 20 yard shot at a 36" bull this morning. I was trying to get a shot a big bull with a cow and that dude walked up between us. Saw a 40" bull in a cut I could have dumped with the 300, but he was very spindly looking....Nicked my bowstring (didnt cut all the way) :bash: so had to run back to the cabin and get my backup bow. New strings on the way! Headed back out! Later!
-
Keep at it Sean. Take your time, i want to see a big one. 50 or over, about 175 will do.
-
tick tock, tick tock, it's down to the witchin hour for today...
-
Dr,
I am loving this thread !!!!
Hold out for Mr. Right, and let rrrr fly.
Looking forward to your final stalk!
-
I am loving it too thank you for taking the time to post up. If you would what area are you concentrating on so we can live vicariously.
-
Saw a dandy bull getting hauled out this morning near Usk on the 49 side. Only got a quick look but it was nice and hauled out whole.....must have been pretty close to the truck considering it was 8:30 am. Good luck to you. There are some nice ones out there.
-
Well, in for the night.. sent dad one direction and I went another, same basic area....I hadn't gone to far down a different road and decided just to sit for a bit and take it all in. I heard one snort/cough whatever they do not long after sitting down maybe 50 yards off the road...I went on with my business and then walked over and just sat watching a timbered canyon. After about 30 minutes I see him walking up the other side and lay down...Huh, Im going to grunt, I do he stands back up, I grunt again and here he comes on a rope....down the draw and up my side...He works his way right to me, at 9 yards, I let him know he's dead...He looks heart broke and slowly walks away. I decide to go back to the road and walk to a new spot. I just crest the bank back onto the road and look up the road about 60 yards and see big tines sticking up over the bank. I check him out and he looks good, he turns his head and then notice that he's all broke up.... :bash:...he comes up on the road and walks around the corner...I sneak up and peek around the corner and there he is at 20 yards...About 42" wide, a single brow and a double brow....I let him walk.....tough decision, if he wasnt so beat up I would have let the air outa him...He was nice bull. anyway headed back to the truck and that was about it...Kinda have that feeling..."did I make the right choice: ? Time will tell I guess.....Adios for the night!
-
Right choice keep at it
-
This thread is great, THANK YOU Dr Death!!! :)
-
Good luck ...sounds like your into the animals
-
AWSOME! "on pins and needles" waiting for tomarrows report. Good luck!
-
I hope to be able to make decisions like that before I die. Lucky dang *censored* :chuckle: Wishing you the best of luck getting the one you want. Can't wait to see the pictures!
-
just shoot one already!!! they're all the size of a truck!!! :chuckle:
-
Your patience will pay off when you get the chance to throw those sticks into a massive hog!
:archery_smiley:
Great patience Sean ... too early to take just anything ... we're all pulling for you back at Puget !!!
-
This is killing me. How long does the rut last? I am not going to be able to go after mine untill the 13th.
-
My bull and three others were with cows on the 28th of October, your hunt will be fine.
-
Hiya! Slower day than yesterday......did my best Jim Shockey today, my dad couldn't believe it and missed about 1/2 the video due to watching instead of filming.... :chuckle: Saw a small bull, tried to call him up but he saw a cow and calf and went their way,,,They went up to a landing and we ran around to catch them. We snuck down and saw him at 64 yards,,I told my dad to watch and VIDEO me that I was going to act like a bull and walk right up to the bull. I held my bow over my head and started walking towards him swaying back and forth grunting and stepping on every branch I could see...I finally stopped at 19 yards! ranged him, pulled back and took aim, told him he was dead and let down......he walked off looking for love. I walk back to my dad and say, "thats going to be awesome video"....he says...oh, I might have got it.....LOL..... we argued for a few about things, watched the video, he got bits and pieces...It's all good though...that was about it for the day...2 more cows and some deer...I did hear a good bull was taken in the Mt Spokane unit today....
-
Here is a couple of pictures of a bull that was taken in the 49' unit this morning. This was a hunter that my dad came across when hunting for his cow. I don't know the story behind the bull but here are the pictures. By the way, my dad and his long time hunting buddy filled their cow tags in the first two days of their season! I wish I could have been there to be a part of the fun, but I'm sure I will hear all of the stories in a couple of weeks at deer camp!
-
Thats a nice bull, congrats to the hunter.
-
The bulls are rutting.......been in 124 looking for my cow and a lot of bull moose signeerywhere
-
Sean, waiting for the call. Keep at it!
-
Solid bull for Washington.
-
Looks like a good bull. Any idea on spread?
-
I don't know any of the details....sorry
-
Thanks for getting the pics.
-
We called this one right to us from about a 1000 yards and had to holler to get it to stop it was blowing stuff out of it;s nose and tearing up stuff.
-
sounds like you are having a good time, I will see you on the hill for late buck
-
Don't want to have to shoot that little one in self defense, they sure do come in good though.
-
Well finally made it back in... had my toughest decision yet.....we decided to drive today and check out different spots. Saw a small bull and cow this morning, passed....driving around to look for a new spot to try to get into where Mr Big is at and we I spot one bedded down, 256 yards in a select cut timber area....O tell my dad to get out the spotting scope. I check him out and see he's about 40+" perfect matching palms with a double, tripple brows....Huh! I start texting everyone, Shane, Eric, My wife..asking about ear width, palm size ect... We watched him in his bed for 2 hours deciding and texting what to do....finally he stands and stretches just like a cat....I decide that if I can get him with my bow I'd do it easy...Well he doesn't come in because he has a cow and calk and smaller bull with him....he starts to wander off...I grab the 300 and tell my dad to get the camera and video it...well I just couldn't do it...had the crosshairs on him, safety off and finger on the trigger. I just have my heart set on doing it with my bow, unless he's 50+ inches.....My dad says he understands, but if he had the tag he wouldn't have let him get out of his bed.... :chuckle:....we'll see if I regret this decision...Shane guaranteed me a 47" one LOL....sorry bro had to throw that in! I need a drink....adios for the night!
-
:dunno: :dunno: It's food for the table. Just shoot it.
-
Haha Sean..You will get a good one
Food for the table? its OIL opportunity make the best of it all about the experience ..that was the case I sure wouldnt be applying for a moose tag for meat I d be in MT shooting does for the freezer.
-
The trigger finger does get itchy after a few days on these hunts. Way to stick to your guns sounds like a pretty good one though, can't wait for tomorrows update.
-
Keep at it. Thanks for the updates. Kind of short on pics though..... :chuckle:
-
ill add some vid clips of bulls starting tomorrow when I get there
-
Meat on the table is taken care of....thats why I shot my elk opening day this year. All so I could experience this whole hunt since I'll never get to do it again....I do have video of todays bull. I'll let Shane load it since I'm a maroon when it come to that stuff...It was a very tough call today, I would have if I didnt see a 50+ the day prior to the opener...I have video of him to...I'll just give Shane my camera..... :chuckle:
-
:chuckle:
-
Way to keep after it! There is plenty of time for a food on the Table bull come the last weekend of the season! Go out there and arrow a 50 incher!
-
Stick with the plan you will get the big one it;s so much fun you never know whats around the corner we saw a really big bear but did;nt shoot because it;s where we were seeing moose. It looks like it;s getting colder.
-
good luck with the rest of your hunt, thanks for the updates. with your decision to hold out, I'm betting you get the 1 you want
-
Don't give your camera to Shane he will just drop it and bust it.
-
Kill a big one guys!
-
Best of Luck!!!
-
Man, been here a week already.....lets see, very weird day for sure....this morning called a bull in twice to 20 yards but he just wouldnt show himself....so I tell me dad lets go wait for Shane and come back in and try calling him up into the timber...Shane shows up, we head back into the area, just opposite side of swamp...start calling, bull answers, bull is just pacing back and forth in swamp...we decide to push him some....move in on him, and he keeps calling and pacing...we end up in his living room, he walks past us in the willows about 25 yards, just getting glimpes of him and then turns and goes straight away from us across the road and up through the clearcut where we tried to get him to go this morning, he was a good bull, probably 45", but no rifle...saw another this afternoon but just got a glimps of him also and he was gone like a ghost, not a peep....so we headed out back to the truck my dad is about 20 yards ahead of us...we get about 200 yards from the truck and I look up towards my dad and look past him down the road and see a toad standing in the road staring at us...panic, whistle at my dad, slap Shane to stop, try to get the rifle and just as I do he turns and is gone.... :bash:....ugh...one of those days...Shane just told me today that you"ll know when you want to kill one, when chaos and panic sets in....thats was tonight....oh well. back at it tomorrow...we are tired...congrats to everyone else who've tagged out!
-
I was hunting Woodward Meadows up in Cottonwood had the same thing happen to me. He had cows w/him and would not come in the open. That evening nothing I though I bumped them out of there. The next morning at shooting hr I made 3 calls from the road side of the meadow. He came right out w/2 cows and a small bull. I saw he wasn't a shooter so I didn't call anymore. He came 300yds across the meadow right to me without me making one call. Keep at it and injoy the fun before the work starts.
-
the hunter...7 miles in and about 3 hours after being heartbroke over a bull he can tell the story :chuckle:
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi200.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa139%2Fshanewa300%2Fmoose002_zps875b5438.jpg&hash=1aae804873cfbbe0a64a58b706504af28857b112)
-
Thanks Bro, I was trying to forget about it... :chuckle: So I'll just skip right to the good part...We see a good bull from probably a mile away.... a hour or two later we end up in the same basic area...Shane makes a call, Im just taking in the view and he says, "here he comes", I look up the ridge and see a pig running at us...throw the glasses up and holy sheet see horns and points everywhere....panic button goes off...Shane says he's got HUGE brows and at least 2 per side....I toss my bow and say, this is it....get the 300 ready....we now cant see him but can hear him.....there is a cut bank right above us and a road in front of us, he either has to run down the cut bank and end up behind us and come out on the road in front of us...perfect! we can hear him walking and then silence.........hmm...... :dunno:....we look at each other and wonder whats up.... I ask Shane if we should peek up over the bank, I guess he says, wind is going all over, I take one step, and he explodes from about 10 yards away on the cut bank.....I run up the bank expecting him to be there or running the way he came....but no he is gone into the only timber there....I was and still am CRUSHED! :'( Thats hunting..... I need a drink!
-
Sounds like you guys are having a blast
-
Just remember when you are tired and ready to give up it will happen... Best of luck and hopefully success soon with some pictures  :chuckle:
-
He will be in the same area today. good luck
-
Good luck. Try to stick with your bow, if that is what you want to get one with. It sounds like the moose are relatively cooperative. I know how the excitement can make a grab for the rifle easy.
Good luck this weekend.
-
Back in the honey hole today, a bust. Saw a cow, bear no shot and heard 2 bulls be they didn't want to play.
-
just making the most of your OIL hunt Sean!!
-
Keep at it, the right bull will appear in time. Good luck
-
SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW DAY....all Im saying!
-
No kidding! Rut is about over.
-
Yikes better get it done before all the deer hunters come out.
-
Yikes better get it done before all the deer hunters come out.
Nice thing about the deer hunters is more eyes in the woods, most deer/elk hunters are happy to share info with moose hunters.
-
:yeah: and could move moose around.. They are not being to visible right now
-
Keep hunting hard, it will happen sean. I had a drink for you
-
Deer hunters arent a bad thing, plus, in my experience you will always see a ton more moose in November than in October in 49 and selkirk. Dont stress to much. I believe the best part of the season still isnt here. Goodluck!
-
hmm.......

:whoo: Why isn't that tag being notched with a bloody broadhead? ;) Can't wait to see more pics and read a story. Us unlucky applicant's have to find our moose fix where we can. This has been the best source so far this year
-
:chuckle:

You best not be messin with us :o :bdid: ;)
-
Your killing us Shane but I am sure you know that.

Wait.....what happened

-
Wait.....what happened
Spill it...
-
hmm? no blood, can't see any notches cut, found a shed and came up with a cool but cruel joke?
-
Looks like a little blood maybe :dunno: But that would be a funny joke
-
must be a joke wasn't shane hunting with dr death and i didn't see 12 points on that bull . Maybe his trigger finger got itchy too !
-
Awesome day spent with my dad, Shane friend Rob...
-
Hey deaths I hope you have good bullets in your rifle... them moose fan soak up some serious lead and keep trucking... or so I've been told. I also heard accubonds put he hurts to the bulls!
-
Bad blisters.....did some road hunting today......feet were tore up.....
-
What a awesome hunt....hunted my butt off.. I did let the air outa a beautiful bull today, didn't use my bow, used the 300, but Im very good with that as in all just came together and I got to share the moment with my dad (73) and 2 good friends. My goal was 40" and double brows....he is 44" and double brows. I honestly couldnt be happier. I hope Shane can post a few picts tomorrow, as I dont have my attachments with me. I will write a better story tomorrow after picts are posted...I do want to thank so many on this site...you have all been great and so helpful! Sean

         Double brows good work.

So the story is short and sweet after hunting behinds gates for 6 days + 3 days of scouting behind gates...We met Shane in Chewelah at 5:45, he and I in Road hunting attire.....running shoes and he had a nice sweatshirt.. :chuckle:...., my dad and friend Rob we're also in the truck. We had some good info from Brian on a place to check out so off we went...we got up to the area at 1st light and instantly saw a small bull, we went maybe 1/2 mile further and stopped to check things out. I could hear a bull grunting in the canyon so Shane and I ran down the road trying to get around to the other side, we got about 1/2 way there and a decent bull sprints across the road, I pull up on him and Shane says, "I dont have the camera on, Im not ready"... :bash:..the bulls gets into the brush and starts grunting and another one starts grunting down in the canyon in the other direction...we mess around for a bit there and all gets quiet. Dad and Rob show up in the truck and we continue down the road...we get maybe 2 miles and I said lets go back up there and look again...we turn around and head back up there, the sun is just cresting and making it very hard to see down in the draw. I see something black flash down below us and I pull over. I open the door and hear a bull grunting, I grab my binos and tell my dad to hand me the rifle. I throw up my glasses and see him walking through the trees, I tell them all "Im shooting him", and chaotic panic starts with everyone. Im trying to load the gun, Shane's trying to get the camera, and dad and Rob are trying to find the bull. I finally get the gun loaded and kneel down, Shanes saying, "IM NOT READY"..... :chuckle:....no one can see the bull but me. Rob finally walks right behind me and says I see him.....BOOM! he hunches up and takes about 3 steps, I jack another round in, dad's saying, "where is he", Shanes saying, I'm not ready, Robs saying "shoot again"..I level off and BOOM, down goes Frazier! WOO-HOO! He's starts trashing around everyone now can see him and then silence....we all go down there and just stare, what a awesome sight and feeling to take such a great animal with such a wonderful bunch of guys....1st shot hit him through the shoulder, taking out heart & lungs, 2nd shot broke his back and came out through his hind end. He's 44" and has double brows and great paddles, all that I could ask for and I couldnt be happier. This site has been INCREDIBLE for help with this hunt, so many people have stepped up with info, offers to help, maps, GPS info and the list goes on. I'm going to do my best to PM you all who did help in anyway and I hope that I can return the favor someday... Thanks! Sean

Way to go Sean, very nice bull. I have been glued here every day to get your updates. Pretty nice to have a rigger at your side when that big thing went down. Pretty cool Rob and your dad could both be with you on this hunt.

Bulls on Parade......(Rally 'round the family).... Looks like we are harvesting. I got this one on Tues day after opener. He was for sure the big bull on campus there. Two tines broke, a scar on his neck and a bruise on his hind quarter.... He was HOT TO TROT for a cow... Got him on Winchester, near the washout. 225 yard shot with a .308/horanady A-max 168 grain out of a Ruger Gunsite.... Missed the first shot, since I ran like a banshee to get into position and the heart was going a weeeeee bit fast. I settled down for the 2nd shot and punched the lungs. He ran 40 yards across the road, and died 20 yards from the road, in the shade, uphill (easy gutting). We estimated about 1000-1100 on the hoof. Triple brow/double brow, and a whole lot of stinky moose smell :).
-
Elkhound... That was my bull. Looking at it, I was saying geeez, it has broken tines and 2/3 brow pattern just like mine.... and using the same color rope :)..... Were you in that armada of cars with the guys looking to fill a last cow tag?
-
Sweet bull rbarchi  How wide is it?
