Just curious, what experiences people have hunting vashon Island. A good chunk of the top state record blacktail have been shot there. I've hunted other islands and know that it's a lot of private land access. has anyone hunted there, was it private or public and how did you do? I have some friends out there, thinking of linking up with them and finding some 100+ inch blackies.
-
A lot of Lib's and Hippies who don't like "mainlanders" I've seen nice deer there the one time I was there. Be prepared to get a lot of :crap:
-
Yea, I'm from orting and played middle school and high school sports there. They are always in our league and I've got some buddies form the island. they're overpopulated with deer, and i drew the second deer tag for over there. I'm sure it will be easy to take down a doe in a few days over there. Just curious how other hunters experiences have been
-
I didnt pound on a lot of doors but I got a lot of bad vibes, too.

There is some state land that you can hunt on, I will try looking it up. Growing up there you saw a lot of the NIMBY crowd against hunting. It seemed to create some sort of problem every year. One yet a guy shot a buck that went into someone's front yard and the homeowner would t let him come retrieve it. He called it a "lesson" to the hunter and, from what I understand let it spoil. Some people there view the deer as their pets, and are very protective over them. Lot of deer there though, and a lot of nice bucks. Some of the deer there are like dogs though, just walk up and shoot them as people have taken away their fear of humans by feeding them and such. Good luck to you if you want to hunt there... It's not what it was 15 year ago when I hunted there... it used to be that most people would let you hunt their property because the deer were very destructive. Now the destructiveness is viewed as "cute" However that works...
Sent from my sniper hide.

Mad Hatter. The other island communities I've hunted black tails on are the same way. A lot of wealthy folks from the city who have never gotten their hands dirty think hunting is a crime. But there area always people who will give permission. I read some archives about all the problems with hunting on the island and all the nature walkers walking right under guys tree stands all day. All I know is there must be some good genes on that island! go look at the state record black tail

There are some really nice deer out there.
-
I used to bowhunt over there a few years back and it seems like there are two sides to the deer/hunting. One side is the ones that don't want you over there hunting/killing their pets. The other side wants them all gone, because they are very destructive. Over the years I hunted there I gained a lot of different land access and was able to get a deer every year I hunted there and a couple years I got two with my second tag. I took a couple really nice bucks, but I most took a lot of does. But I haven't been there in a few years so I am not sure how things are these days. I might still have some of the names and contact info from the places I used to hunt. Let me take a look and I will PM you if I can find them. Have fun.
-
doyourtime, that would be great. I appreciate it. I know the main problem is vehicle collisions, seems like everyone would want to be safer :hello:
-
Yeah I used to talk to a county sheriff that worked over there and he said there are a lot of vehicle collisions with the deer and when you drive around up there you will see where people put big nets and stuff like that over there plants, flower, fruit trees to try to keep there deer from eating and destroying them. There are no natural predators over there either.
-
Yup, lots of deer but it's virtually all private property - and mostly smaller properties at that.
Last year KC Parks did a pilot program to allow hunting (again) on the one remaining public area. I believe they will allow it again this year - but only during the main modern firearms season.
Your best bet would be to gain permission to hunt private land. We've been riding our horses in the state lands for years - I've been in there hundreds of times - and never seen a deer. But there are a few elusive ones.
You would do the deer and gardens a favor if you helped thin them out. Not many people actually "love" the deer (most love their gardens and rose bushes more), but there are houses everywhere and safety is the biggest issue.
If you do hunt on Vashon, PLEASE get permission and don't just jump out of your truck and shoot the first deer you see ... we've had too many main-landers give hunters a bad name in the last few years. Thanks!
-
lol. I've never heard of someone just pulling up to someones front yard and blasting a deer. maybe a poacher :dunno: Of course I will get permission and I hunt with a bow, people should be a lot more receptive to it, hopefully. I have friends from the island, I just hope they have land or know people who have land. I know on other islands I've hunted, people have begged me to "kill as many as you can." Obviously, that's not legal, but they really do cause a problem for drivers, especially at night time as well as yards/gardens/trees etc. Anyone can feel free to PM me if they would like the deer on their property thinned out. I'm willing to share some meat and am extremely ethical as far as where I shoot, how far I shoot and she placement.
-
The shot placement you mentioned is major........
Don't want a deer to run 100 yards into a property that you don't have permission to enter.
-
Yea, for sure. Even though it is "fair chase," I would rather just not have to deal with it :bash:
-
Duh! That is why there are record breakers there. If they are not hunted they grow big. They get to eat all the good stuff in people's yards. And they are not benchleggers, real blacktails.
-
I'm a sheriff's deputy and I work out on Vashon sometimes (a few times a month). I've never seen more deer anywhere else. I drive around at night and I see dozens of deer and I'm not even really looking for them. I've asked here and there about hunting and the answer I get is people don't want their pets killed. Misty Isle I think allows hunting but I haven't looked into it.
-
Well the people out there obviously think they own the wildlife. Just because you feed them doesn't mean you own them. The State obviously thinks they need to be controlled. Would be nice to locate some acerage then go to the county accessors website find the owner and contact them about hunting it. Then show him you are an ethical hunter.
-
sounds like a fun place to hunt to me if it was closer I would give it a go.i like hunting the islands and I am amazed at the quality of deer they have.i think if you put in the effort you could find people that don't worship the animals .look for gardens and orchards.
-
Good luck on getting access. Offer to help with yard work, it will open more doors :twocents:
-
Any other members have any vashon experiences they would like to share!?
-
Ive killed several deer on the island. There used to be a lot more access, but between KC turning areas into parks and not allowing hunting and Misty Isle not really allowing hunting access anymore, its hard to get permission.
We have killed some bruisers over the years out there, but its not worth the BS that you have to deal with out there for me to waste my time hunting it anymore. I still have a couple of areas that I can hunt out there, but I don't waste my time unless its late in the season and I havenf tagged out elsewhere. The biggest buck that I have seen come off the island was shot by a friend of mine and it was an 11x7 with a 23-1/2" inside spread.
-
that is awesome! any chance you could post a picture of the 11x7 black tail!?!?!?! I would love to see a pic of that beauty
-
Hi Krapmit,
I tried sending you a PM but I'm not sure it went through... can you send me a PM?
Thanks!
-
Hi Bantams. I got your pm just now. Thanks for the msg. I have got some permission on a few different private properties on the island, two off cove rd. pm me on which area you would like to elk hunt in and I will see if I can lend you some help.

Cem3434,
Did his name happen to be darren, or something close to that?

Its not Darren, but his first name is Adam. He shot it after another friend took him back into an area where he seen a 3 point while gutting his 5x7 which has the thickest bases I have ever seen on a blacktail in perso. Adam seen a buck going through the brush and he shot it thinking it was a 3x3 with eyeguards, so he was pleasantly surprised.
-
i met a guy one time who showed me a pic of a 7x11 from vashon he shot. wasnt named adam tho.
-
About 10 years ago, there was an 11x something running around Misty Isle that someboby shot. Maybe it was the guy you met.
-
:dunno: but that would put it about the time he shot it.
-
Can we PLEASE see a picture of one of the 11x7 buck CEM??? I've never seen a deer with that many points..maybe in a magazine, but to know it came from an area some of us may hunt...that's enticing.
-
I'd love to see some photos, too!
-
WE NEED PICS !!!!!

WE NEED PICS !!!!!
:yeah:
-
It's my buddy's buck, so I dont know that I have any pictures of it. I am in Vegas right now, so I will check when I get back next week and post some if I do!
-
This is isn't even close to a 11x7 but here are a couple pic of a buck I shot over on Vashon some years ago. I started to try to do my own mount and never even finished, it has been like this for years in my garage and just pulled it out to take a couple pics for this post.
-
So, Vashon is in the same hunting unit as issaquah...Its a regular season, but is there going to be hunting allowed in the general season on private property? I know people have been talking about the island hunting season being limited

Your question is hard to understand. If its within 454 you abide by the unit 454 regs regardless if your hunting public or private. The fact that it's an island doesn't make a difference.
-
Vashon is actually Deer Area 4013 (as well as GMU 454), which means you can take "Any Deer" during modern, archery, or muzzleloader. And it's not closed for any season.
-
for modern firearm you can only shoot "any buck" not any deer just clearing that up o no one gets in trouble :twocents:
-
Nope, "Any Deer" for modern season in Dear Area 4013 (Vashon-Maury Island).
"Any Buck" for 454 Issaquah.
-
oops i didnt see that part sorry, :sry: i looked in the regs but it still seems iffy are you 100% sure because i have a buddy at work that was actually looking to hunt vashon for modern firearm with his shotgun but we werent aware he could take a doe. thats nice to know
-
I've shot many deer out there, we have a little property out there. Everybody is right about people not wanting you to hunt, but it will work if you ask around. About there not being any predators out there, you are way wrong. I believe the state has released coyotes out there in the last 6 or 7 years to knock down the deer herd because people won't let you hunt and there is no hunting on Riveria Country Club. I have shot two coyote and have seen at least one everytime I've been out there the last 3 years, sometimes two or three. Oh yea, you won't see too many fawns out there because of that. Only in Riveria where there are a lot of people will you see fawns.
-
Looks like Riviera Country Club is on Anderson Island... :dunno:
Yes, there are some coyotes on Vashon, most likely ones that swam over. They don't seem to be influencing the deer population yet. Cars kill more deer on Vashon than anything else.
-
Yeah, Riviera is on Anderson. Lots of yotes too >:(
-
Funny thing. I have yet to see a deer hit by a car out there, and the speed limit is thirty five. Again, a lot of coyote. Deer are always on the side of the road, and the people that live out there know it and slow down.
-
We are pulling deer out of the road that have been hit by cars out there every week. I work the graveyard shift so I might see it more than most but it happens a lot.
-
My bad.....Vashon..Anderson...Vashon...Anderson. Sometimes I get my islands mixed up. Wish I could hunt on McNeil Island though. Seen a lot of big ones out there when I was doing some construction. The last few days of October is always a good time to be out on the island.
-
Anybody hunt cypress island?
-
Well, I just learned that its a 20 dollar round trip to get on vashon island. :'( Right when I got excited about my few properties I can hunt! I'm pretty sure I'll give one go at it, after that I'm not sure if I can afford it!
-

I've hunted it before and been out there scouting/camping twice. Never put eyes on a deer but seen sign. Terrible weather for huntIng when I was out there. Probably wouldn't hunt it again but it was fun
