WooHoo!!!
Here's 4 of my blades that are ready to go. I'm pretty pleased with them.
These are all Peerless 8670 Tool Steel, from 1/4" stock. Heat Treated and Cryo-Cycled by Gene Martin, Provision Forge. Awesome heavy steel, and treated by a consumate professional bladesmith. They're as good as they come!
#8 and #11 are extremely tapered tangs, 12 and 17 are slightly tapered, only a little. They're all full tang style knives.
They're finished by hand to 400, ready to either hand finish to 600 or 1000, or to blast, or to hand finish to 600 then buff to a mirror finish.
You can see my thoughts in the pin hole patterns when I built them, but I'm not limited to those if the grip material dictates otherwise.
Here's a pic...

Top to bottom...
#17, (SOLD PF) 9" overall, 4" blade. Very deep hollow grind on this one. Big grip.
#8, (SOLD PF) 8 3/4" overall, 4 1/4" blade. Lots of blade, super forward balance.
#12, (SOLD PF) 8 1/4" overall, 3 1/2" blade. Coffin handled single edged boot style pick.
#11, 7 1/2" overall, 3" blade. Real ergie handling skinner.
I'll be building these out in a while, I have several ahead of them that are pre-sold.
If you're interested in having one of these built to your own specs, just contact me, I'll make it the way you want it! As of this posting ,none of these are spoken for.
Thanks guys!!
-
Sure like the #8 there rain. Whats the blade thickness for the spine?
Sage
-
3/16" at the ricasso, tapers to 1/8" at the butt.
-
Here's 3 more, ready to build...
These are from an antique sawmill bandsaw blade, probably from the 50's. They're 1/8" thick. Probably 15N30, but I'm still researching. They're also Treated and hardened by Gene Martin, Provision forge.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi234.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee99%2Frainshadow1%2FDSC03808.jpg&hash=6942df05ee70d7aafdfb54bbbc85d3fb68934653)
#5, 8 1/4" overall, 3 1/2" blade. Short Hunter, real grippy.
#4, (SOLD!) 9" overall, 4 1/2" blade. False edge on the spine, kitchen or camp style knife.
#3, (SOLD! PF) 8 1/4" overall, 3 3/4" blade. Lite utility style, nice handling.
These knives are thinner and more precise handling than the 8670. They'll be a little bit cheaper. They can grip up nice or basic.
Again, as of posting, these are unclaimed! Contact me if you want to reserve one!
(I have 3 1095 blades and 2 more 8670 blades that I'm still cleaning up and rubbing out!)
-
#8 would look really good with purpleheart and ebony...and in my hand...
-
I think that #8 shape will be my next blade too. At the rate Steve is going I'll need to reserve it now so I can get it by next summer.
-
Oh, hey! I forgot about this one.
This little 3 finger knife was custom ordered with every i dotted and every t crossed. So, just to be sure, I built 2! He took #14, and #15 is still available to be built.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi234.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee99%2Frainshadow1%2FDSC03811.jpg&hash=c3986f66f8a294aad0eef9e071fe1f6a7c06b8b1)

#15 is 6" overall, 2 3/4" blade, air hardened A2 tool steel. Convex grind.
The knife built is almost identical, built with silver pins, stainless mosaic pins and lanyard tube, and Exhibition grade desert ironwood. (I took 2 pictures because this is such an awesome piece of wood! I HAVE MORE OF IT TOO!!!) Bookmatched scales, but there's so much figure you can hardly tell! Black carbon spacers. Hand rubbed 600 grit finish.
Again, finished knife is sold to-order but A2 blade #15 is available.
-

Got mine yesterday Steve. Wow is it ever nice. I love the blade. Super sharp too! The leather is a perfect piece. Thick and very nicely shaped and fitted. I love it!
One question is how should I care for this steel?
-
Just keep it clean and oil it a few times per year.
-
Here's some kydex from this batch, sorry for the bad pic...

Here's #22, it has a "ghosted" etch of the number and maker's mark. Still experimenting around with it...
Buffalo Horn knife, #22, 8670 Tool Steel, Moose Antler spacer with Brass liners, Brass pins, Mosaic Lanyard tube, Acrylic Bolsters. Traveling tracks...

Here's #5. I didn't expect it to come out so nice, honestly. But I cut into a fabulous piece of cocobolo, and the butt (which is the actual back edge of the antique sawmill blade) turned out beautiful! Spaced with silver carbon and bolstered with bone... a favorite of my designs.

Had a repeat customer see the Laminate series I've been posting up on predatormasters.com, and asked for a Call Style Knife!
I've been making Knife Style Calls, but this is my first knife with laminate game call influence!
It's a base block of Zebrawood, with Red Pauduk and Black Palm white spaced Lams. Then it's pinned with 10, 1/8" Hickory pins and 1, 1/4" Oak pin. My first wood pinned knife!
-
Gorgeous. The longer I wait to see what I want to do with my reserved blade, the more ideas I get. If you have to get it built out Steve, let me know, and I'll decide. If it can wait a little longer, that would be great, because I am up in the air right now on what I want to do with the handle.
-
That's more then I expected. just gorgeous. This is my third knife from you and it still amazes me what you come up with. Can't wait to get it in my hands.
-
Thanks guys.
I'm at your leisure, TL. You tell me when and what.
Thanks again, Craig. I'm now officially in love with wood pins!

#28 is mine! :IBCOOL:

Got another batch back from my Heat Treating Bladesmith today!
Good variety, some D2, some ATS34, and 10 more Budget blades.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi234.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee99%2Frainshadow1%2FDSC04700.jpg&hash=6cd565aefa705321ed60c3e3b22387a49f42879d)
These are the Budget Blades. L6 from an antique sawmill baldsaw blade. Heat treated to around 60rc. They'll be built like the last budget blades. Blasted/Blued, Gripped in Mycarta, Sheathed with Black Kydex pack sheaths. $65 delivered. I forgot to number them before the pic, but they're numbered from left to right B14, B15, B16.... to B24.
B22, 3rd from Right is sold.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi234.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee99%2Frainshadow1%2FDSC04701.jpg&hash=f0ded080c9554a9eecc79ec27e22a4bde7c82d52)
These are the D2, Fired and Cryo'd. This is Super steel. There was actually come confusion at first since the manufacturer of the planer blades these came from said, "They're such good D2 they're almost M2!" Turns out they're D2, but it is a higher grade D2... This is fantastic stock. Numbered D2-1, D2-2, and D2-3. These will be built to order and quoted individually based on the build.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi234.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee99%2Frainshadow1%2FDSC04702.jpg&hash=f21b66db75ff4d272c4f4eeba1569a396f8fc426)
These are the ATS34 Stainless Blades. Fired and Cryo-d. Several designs. These are sweet blades! Also will be built to order and quoted individually based on the build. Numbered A1, A2, A3, A4, and A5.

I'll send you a PM... It's 8.5" overall, 3.75 cutting edge....
-
How much more does Damascus blade cost for a build then a regular blade?
-
Hi Craig.
Damascus is gonna add about $40 to the build. I bought that billet and ground those, then when I got them back from HT, I finished them and etched them. I'm really excited how they turned out!
-
Damascus #1 is reserved...

how long is the blade and handle on Damascus 3? How much to reserve it?

Here's a new sheath design Killbilly and I came up with...
It's two layers of leather, a front, a fitted middle layer, then the back layer is Kydex, molded to the knife. The belt clip is fitted and spring loaded, but can be manipulated for easy on/off.
I'll be making more like this!

How do you sew your sheeths steve? Do you do it by hand or do you use a machine? Just curious.
-
By hand.
-
Hey Guys... I've got several orders on the pegs, but I'm waiting for components on all of them! Soooooo..... #24, #31, and #A2 have been pulled to be built on speculation and will be placed up for sale soon. Probably by April 1 or 2. They're all built, just have to do the finish work, and photograph them!
Also... as soon as I get the next batch back from heat treat (very soon), I'll be updating the photos of the blades that are still up for sale, and posting them right here in the tail end of this thread, so it's easier to see what's available.
I'm leaving all the old photos, so you can look back and see the blank that the finished knife came from. But if you're interested in a Custom, watch here for the updated pics... All available blades will be posted together.
Feel free to PM any questions or inquiries.
-
Hi steve
I was just thinking that a lot of us would truely love seeing a knife come together throught the differn't stages. If you wanted to show Teachermans knife in stages as you build it it would give us mundanes an idea what it takes :tung:
-
I did that a long time ago. Step by step. Don't know if it's still up, I had to houseclean on photobucket recently. I'll see what I can do...
-
As of Today, 4 / 9 / 2009 , These are the blades I have available for sale/build...

All of these have been ground by me, and heat treated by Gene Martin, of Provision Forge... except for the 3 production units, of course.
Lettered A thru X. Please feel free to contact me and ask specific questions... or to request dimensions and close-ups. (The production Chef's Knife at the bottom center is 12.5" overall.)
A and B are 8670 Tool Steel.
C thru J are ATS 34 Stainless.
K, L, M, are production 440C Stainless.
N thru V are D2.
W and X are Damascus
-

This is the "Yu-tin" model. The first model I'm going to try to make the same as the last one. I'm giving this one to the Apache Guide on the San Carlos Rez who found likely Cougar country with me (and it ALMOST paid off! We had one yelling at us!) He didn't know this was coming.
If you'd like a similar one, Please let me know. I have those 3 and will make more. They'll all be different, but the same, as handmade items tend to be!
-
Damascus Blade "X" is also Sold...
-
How much would one of them cost? the one like you made for the guide
-
I'd do that one for $170.
-
Dibs has been called on production blades L & M as well....
-
Damascus blade "W" is also claimed....
-
You sure do nice work. I am going to have to save up some cash and get a couple from you.

Anyone have any ideas on how they would have "I" finished?
-
Anyone have any ideas on how they would have "I" finished?
can't see the blade well enough to give ideas on it.
-
shhhh dont bother him hes working on a skinner for me
-
Gigpig, I got a good look at your blade. I would definately put that knife to use in the field and I believe I would finish it like he did #31
Purpleheart and Black Micarta scales, Hickory and Silver Nickle pins, White Carbon Spacers.
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi234.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee99%2Frainshadow1%2FDSC05055.jpg&hash=f368da2928cd1fe6de7ed8f4e6af27a4040bfa3a)
There's a ton of more decorative and eye popping grips Steve is capable of putting together. This would be my choice for this one.
You ask.. MHO
Enjoy your new knife.. I can't seem to get enough of them.
-
You and I have similar tastes KillBilly :IBCOOL: I have two of them in the works, hopefully three if Steve modifies one of them in the near future  As far as "I", I think I like what he did with "ST14"-Desert Ironwood, black carbon spacers, nickle pins. I think I like the wood to cover the entire surface, I not that creative, simple :chuckle: Certainly open for any ideas!
-
Here's my Pride

-
My only worry is that I will never use it :'( They are just too fancy to get dirty. With any luck I'll get to break it out and post pics of it in use :IBCOOL:
-
The three largest one in the middle I have not used yet. the other 4 have been used and found to be very sharp and functional.

The flare off that ax blade is priceless. Good looking blades there BTW.
-
Im interested in E
-
rougheye, E is a Butchering knife, 3" cutting edge, 8" overall. I ground it to replicate the blade I've seen many times handled almost exclusively by professional butchers and furriers. Short, sweet, and to the point! The grip is my signature palm swell. 3/16th ATS34 stainless.
-
Here's Blade "W" aka Damascus #2, and a custom ordered set of Fancy Necker Knives....
"W" built with Moose Antler, Buffalo Horn, silver pins, and an acrylic inlay. It's sheathed with a custom checker pattered decorated sheath with the form fitted kydex back and a snap closure over the finger hook.

Do you have any examples of an Ulu you have done? I collect them, what would K cost with a nice bone handle of some sort? You can PM me with details if you want...
P.S. when I look at your knifes I'm really excited to see how the one you are building for me turns out. I cant wait to get it but at the same time take your time. You cant rush art :chuckle: You been playing around with any track carvings?
-
I haven't practiced the track yet. I've done a Wolf track and the crown recently. I'm going to do another Bison Howler with Grizzly tracks on it, so that'll be good practice too, but yours is gonna be smaller work, more like the crowns.
I have an Ulu done, it's not special, just production stainless with a quilted Sapele grip. (Available for $40) The one pictured is also production stainless. I haven't ground my own Ulu yet. When I grind my own I'll use it for an opportunity to scrimshaw, as the grip is a larger block than most knives.
-
Okay Steve, I have been looking at all of these great knives and have until now resisted even asking about one. I keep opening this thread and looking at the knife that Killbilly posed #31 at the top of page 9 and I have to know what it would cost for the same knife blade (size, shape, etc.) with a lighter colored wood handle. I like this one but don't want to copy everything the same. Can you send me a PM with suggestions and an appprox. price
-
Coming at ya', Y.D.

Y.D. you won't be sorry if you purchase one of his knives. As far as copying, don't worry.. because each of his knives is created seperately they will not be clones. Each will have their own character. Steve knows his stuff and will definately put a big smile on your face.

hows mine coming along
-
I was supposed to see it back from heat treat this week, but I haven't yet. I'll rattle the cage a little...
-
This is probally a stupid question but I have noticed that a lot of the blades that are offered today are hard to resharpen if you allow them to get too dull. I have some Damascus knives that I like but the cheap old carbon blades are quick to put an edge on in the field. What would you reccomend for someone that doesn't care about blade life so much as putting an edge on quick while in the field? Can you just temper it so that it is a little softer or what would you reccomend?
-
When I start to monkey with my own HT, then I can do that with most steels.
Some steels, like the 8670 I used quite a bit of, did that as their optimium temper. Stuff like the lower end carbon tool steels are going to naturally end up that way at their best HT recipe. Softer stainlesses too, like AUS6, 440a, 420 and some others too.
I don't recommend it, honestly. A top performing steel like ATS34, S30V in stainless, and D2, O1, and etc in carbon can be heat treated to last so long, it's a shame to stop skinning or gutting or whatever to re-sharpen.
If the edge geometry is right, premium steel with a steep edge will EASILY last through an entire field dress without effort, and tune back up to hair popping sharp with 50 strokes on a steel. You'll be YEARS between re-establishing edges because of use (not counting damage.)
-
hows mine coming along
I think it melted during heat treat, oh well :chuckle: :chuckle:

Here's a LOT of 6 Frank Isom Damascus Blades.
They've all got welded mild steel tangs, ground, tapered, and then heat treated for hardening and temper. Isom damascus is some of the most beautiful steel I've ever dealt with. These will be awesome knives...

Here's ... ummmm.... I'm gonna have to refer back and edit....

Nickle/Maple over convex ATS34 Stainless. Sweet handling!
And here's one I did for the Local Game Farm where I'm gathering the Cougar recordings. (Up over 50 individual sounds now, plus a BUNCH of purring! You won't believe the sequences I'm going to make with them!)
(https://hunting-washington.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi234.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fee99%2Frainshadow1%2FDSC06863.jpg&hash=c6e5659d5ea1c97ddb14b340623105c70649af60)

It's D2 steel, with brass, and the Bison and the Sika Deer are both products from the Game farm. The inlay is mother of pearl from local oyster shells.
And here's one for the Predator Hunting Talkcast! It's going to be a giveaway there, so get with Brian Downs and find out the rules, you could win this one!

It's a super handy working blade style I've seen professional fur handling men use alot. ATS34 Stainless. The grip is bone spaced black, Amboyna Burl spaced red, and a spacer of Wooly Mammoth Ivory! It'll have a pack sheath.
Again, get with the Predator Hunting Talkcast / Brian Downs... you could win this one!

Awesome art as usual Steve. Mark
-
Beautiful Steve. I'm just glad to have a couple of your semi-early blades. If anyone is looking for a knife I send them your way. I'm not big on the real fancy stuff, but the knives you made for me are gorgeous and work like they should. I can't wait to pass them on to my children and grandchildren.
-
Steve where can I get info on your knives :) Very interested DF
-
I'll send you a PM...
You can PM, E-mail, Call, Snail Mail, yell from the street....

x2...I think I bought one of the 1st ones he posted on here for sale. woohoo...
-
They're all still "early" as knifesmithing goes! I'm still just shy of 5 years. They're getting tight though, I was happy with my grinding yesterday! (I set my pants on fire... but that could happen to anybody!)
Speaking of Grinding...
Any Special Requests??!!?! This is the PERFECT time to ask me about a custom blade design...
-
Looking forward to owning one someday. I think I am going to go for a real fancy one probably with a matching call. ;)
-
Ok, the previous available blade posts and pics are going to be updated below...
THIS it the latest, and will include Everything, Past and Present!
I've come up with a new numbering system:
All my hold over 2009 blades start with "09".
From now on new batches of blades will start with the month/year of their birth.
For instance, this batch I'm posting now, they all start with "1-10..."
Here goes...

More coming! I have a new batch of budget blades, different sawmill bandsaw steel (modern.) I ground them into a variety of boning knives! I need to test the HT before I officially post them though...
All "S" blades are ATS34 Stainless - - Except for "09-S1" which is 440C stainless. All "D" blades are D2 tool steel.
All these are fresh out of heat treat, so they are a little rough looking, but hopefully by now I've shown you how they transform!
Thanks for looking and following my progress, guys!
-
Ok, I didn't know the exact alloy of these new budget blades, so I had to take my best guess with the heat treat recipe.... Success!!!
I got a test piece to bend to 90 degrees (Yes, that's all the way over!) and come back with no noticable change! (No bending, no breaking, no cracking...) It's thin steel (.073) but that's still fantastic! I'm tickled!
So here they are!
Budget Bandsaw Boning Blades!

These are thinner, as I said (.073), they're carbon, they're from modern Sawmill Bandsaw steel, and they're going to cut like nobody's business!!!
They will build cheaper, so let me know if you want to do one!
-
Steve PM sent..
-
how much for 1-10-B7 in a basic no frills type build Steve?
you can pm me if you want.
-
The B series are going to start at $70 apiece with a basic build (one piece of wood or micarta and a kydex sheath) and go up from there - - based on the materials and design.
I already have 2 other guys nibbling on 1-10-B7, seem there's a market for fillet sized boning blades! I can make more! (Going to, so if you would like something slightly different, let me know!)
-
Ok, here's some more D2 Blades available for Build...
