THE CONTEST HAS STARTED!
RULES:
~1 minute ± 5 seconds total sound clip
~File needs to be emailed to me at phelpsgamecalls@yahoo.com as a .mp3 or .wav file. Subject:Elk Calling Contest. Include, Name, Hunting-Washington handle, and mailing address.
~Only one caller allowed per sound clip/sound clip must be continuous from start to finish
~Only Air operated calls may be used
~All Callers will remain anonymous until after the winners are chosen (can elect to stay anonymous after that if preferred).
~Caller submissions will be posted under the contest for others on the forum to listen.
~Jason Phelps, Corey Jacobsen and Elknut Paul will be the judges and will base the score out of 30. (10 for herd talk, 10 for bull sounds and 10 for freestyle).
Required Sounds:
20 Seconds of Herd Talk (Cow/calf vocals, pleading, estrus, alarm, etc...)
20 Seconds of Bull Sounds (Locator, Challenge, Scream, Grunt, Chuckle, etc...)
20 Seconds of Freestyle (Any elk vocalizations you would like to use)
DISCLAIMER:
The judges will score the audio clip according to their own criteria. Their decision is final. Do not get offended or argue with the results. This is for FUN and lets keep it that way.
Prizes:
1st Place - $100 worth of product from Phelps Game Calls, $125 credit at Charlie's Taxidermy (non-transferable and non-redeemable), $40 Gift Certificate to elk101.com, subscription to extreme elk.
2nd Place - $50 worth of product from Phelps Game Calls, Havalon Piranta, $25 Gift Certificate to elk101.com, subscription to extreme elk.
3rd Place - $25 worth of product from Phelps Game Calls, $15 Gift Certificate to elk101.com, subscription to extreme elk.
4th Place - Primetime Outdoors Shirt & DVD + elknut
5th Place - Primetime Outdoors Shirt & DVD + elknut
Other Prizes: Elknut will be including a bunch of videos, etc... that will be random (I will post what is included when I receive it).
WORKFLOW:
I went ahead and did this two different ways:
1)I made a video and then transferred it to YouTube. You can than use many online converters to convert the Youtube video to an .mp3 (google search). What you can do is enter in the letters pwn right after the www. when watching the video and hit enter. This will take you to a screen where all the available converters that YouTube supports are. I used OnlineConverter. Video must be "public" for the conversion. Otherwise you can go to google and search for "youtube to mp3 converter" and use one of your choice.
2)I also used a program called Free Video Converter. Here, you can convert any video to an .mp3 directly (It must be downloaded to your computer though).
I also advise that everyone uses a 256 kbps transfer to make sure that they are getting the highest audio quality. Then just email me the .mp3 file with your name and user name attached.

Mines in. Sure would have been easier to do 90 seconds or 2 minutes. To fit it into 1 minute I had to rush to get through all the sounds I know and still feeling like I'm leaving something out. I'm looking forward to what everyone else comes up with.:yeah:
I know I am leaving some sounds out, it is deciding which ones to use that is my trouble...
I had a plan, even wrote an outline, but in action it comes out just sounding like a bunch of calls all thrown together.

Kinda gives guys a edge if they are getting feedback on what has already been posted. Then they can adjust to what is wanted. I say hold it all until the deadline is past :tup: Then it's a little more level playing field.

All pretty good callers and I'm sure can call in elk. #6 sounds like he has had some experience at contest calling. great lip balls and grunts. Cow and calf calls are awsome. :twocents:
I didn't hear any grunts or chuckles in his routine though. Other than that, the guy is seriously dialed.

I wouldn't get discouraged. My list of favorites are different from what I'm seeing mentioned by others... actually quite a bit different. Our ears certainly hear the sounds differently and I wouldn't be surprised if the judges choose some different numbers as well.
There are some good clips here. I can take some techniques and vocalizations from all of them to hone my own skills. While its tough to put together a perfect 60 second sound clip, you'd be hard pressed to listen to any of these without hearing a couple of sounds that get you excited for elk season :)

Clearly, this will be the 2nd place finish and if you liked this entrant's sound clip bildo's would blow everybodies away! He is definitely a champion elk caller and I still can not figure out why he's not taking over the circuit and why he's not capitalizing on tutorial videos and gaining sponsorships and making money? :dunno: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

A 19 year old prodigy, "world champion" elk caller that has never killed a bull himself but called "a lot" in for his dad on every high fence operation in North America. My memory is a bit weak but that's just based off my limited recollection. ;)

Caller 21 file is having issues. I'm going to try something else tomorrow.
I've listened to them all a couple times. Now I need to sit down close my eyes and imagine I am in the woods and put a score to them.
I know Corey and Paul are also starting to go through them.

Slim - I was at a semi-private 3D shoot called the Fluke Shoot. They have a pretty steep downhill goat shot there that I Killed.

:chuckle: Oh I know I can call elk just fine, good enough to kill a couple :chuckle: I learned a lot from lisening to these. I will go threw and lisen to them in order tonight. It is a great chance to learn from others and what great callers like to hear. I just never thought to call as much as most people do. I never hunt with anyone who calls. So I am the only one I ever hear calling. So this is great for me! I just never would have thought to talk as much as a lot of the guys are doing.
Jason, thanks for putting this on, It was alot of fun.... looking forward to the next one (atleast I have a year to practice for that one :hello: )

hey carp, i picked 6 for sure, but i think 21 did better than 3rd. i liked 5 to. my # was 7. i didn't bugle at all, which deserved what i got. hence the >:(.

Killing elk is what it is all about!!! We for some reason have to turn everything into a competition (that is really hard to judge). :dunno:

Not sure about everyone else (aside from agonizing wait for the results, lol) I had a blast and it forced me to break out the calls and start practicing.

There are specific sounds I liked. Two callers used an estrus buzz which gained them a little. Caller 21 was one of the only ones to throw in a locator bugle so I noted that as i was scoring. Caller 5 had a bunch of great cow calls (wide range) as well as clean accurate bugles with lip hawk control. Caller 6 had a wide variety of cow sounds as well as excellent bugle control, etc...

So how does this contest compare to what would be asked of you in a actual competition like for the Rocky Mountain elk foundation ?? Im really curiouse. Do guys practice a certain sequence of calls and perfect them so there isnt much thinking in the process. basically memorizing what you are going to do??way to go bucklucky. great tones with your reed. :tup:
brad cain was last years mens division champ at the worlds. he tied for 3rd this contest. everyone practices their sequence. those who practice a lot and don't let nerves get to them, usually do well.

Those are some excellent sounds out of the herd master, makes one heck of a great cow call too! I struggle with deep sounding grunts with that call and the Allstar, though.
I'm trying the Full Rut this season, like it quite a bit so far, though a handful of them yields pretty inconsistent sounds for me.

I was caller #2. Mine was my first take, I was driving in my car on a highway in MT. No bugle which hurt my sound quite a bit on bugling.

Caller # 3... It took me about 7-8 tries to get one that sounded ok and fit the time frame. I used my cell phone to record in my basement.
