Have a safe trip!!
-
sounds like a blast..hope get a lot of action
-
I'm sure I will have fun whether I shoot or catch anything. I have two previous trips trying to get a musky, so I don't even have high hopes for that. :chuckle:
I was reading the catfish topic, wished I could have made it down for that, sounds like everyone had a great time.
-
We were a day and a half late leaving so I had to scrub one day of fishing off my itinerary. :bash:
But we are on the road and makin ground fast, we have covered over 1000 miles in 17 hours only stopping for gas, drinks, and to get rid of drinks. :chuckle:
Seen the most roadkill in ND, nearly to Minnesota and thankfully none of that roadkill is on account of us. :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Drive safe!

Drive safe!
I have been sleeping and working on the computer the whole way, the wife likes to drive. Can't believe she is still driving and wide awake. Seeing some awesome looking fishing spots going through MN.
Not stopping till WI, got a meeting with some fresh fish fillets this afternoon (fish fry). :EAT:
-
That is a long drive! That fish will taste all the better when you get down there after that kind of drive! I have clients sunday if the weather holds. So instead of shooting carp I will be day dreaming that I am down there with you shooting some gar!!! I don't know if you want to shot one as badly as I want you to shoot one and post pictures!!!!! LOL

Last night we went out for a fish fry, the fish was great, man did I eat too much or what, that really messed up the diet. :chuckle: :bash:
Then we played some horseracing game and poker till midnight, had a blast and made about 10 bucks off the in-laws. :chuckle:
Nobody is up here yet except for me so thought I would check in. I was going fishing this morning but realized I have to get a few things first, so I'll wait till I get back to WI to fish here. Headed to Mississippi about mid day, hopefully be sitting in a treestand tomorrow evening with my bow and pistol for hogs.
My gar bowfishing trip is planned for Monday night, can't wait for that. I see some dude in the news arrowed one in TX that weighed about 300 pounds. Heck I don't care how big, but hoping that somebody in the boat gets at least one so I can see one in person.
My brother-in-law had on a big musky a week ago here but lost it when it got tangled in some logs and roots. I will be looking for one of them when I get back from Miss.
People are starting to stir here, talk later. :hello:
-
Anarchy! Anarchy! :chuckle:
Glad you are having a good time hope you can smack a hog to.
-
Tonight is the night :IBCOOL: Stickem Stickem Stickem!
Me and the clients had a good shoot yesterday :IBCOOL: They lauched over 300 arrows :IBCOOL: Plus a first timer got his first fish! I love it :IBCOOL: Nothing is better in guiding world then help a person get there first animal or fish in this case :chuckle: I have 2 new shooters next week as well! Cant wait! Weather needs to turn hot!

Due to extremely hot and dry weather, conditions aren't good for fishing or hunting. The Tallahatchee River which is normally at the 16 to 20 foot level is only rated at the 8 ft level. We were forced to go 35 miles downstream to launch the boat, then we had to motor all that distance back upriver to the house where I am staying. Hold on I see moving.....
-
It was just deer coming through..... I am sitting over a waterholes watching for hogs in Mississippi. Hog hunting has been tough it is so hot they are only moving late at night and I wasn't having much luck. I have been watching just before dark and right at daylight, tried sitting sitting most of one day, that was miserable and unproductive. The second evening I had a shot, but am using a borrowed gun and when I had closed the bolt it hadn't loaded. I zeroed the crosshairs on a pig and click. :bash:
-
Back to the trip up the river, we set out on a good speed, Chip said we needed to go 29-30 to get past the flying carp before they jumped. He explained they are a serious problem and we have to keep our speed up or risk getting hit by them when they jump, for some reason they jump when they hear a boat motor running. :yike: :bdid:
-
I have always enjoyed dangerous and exciting things so this sounded like fun trying to avoid these flying carp. We hadn't gone far when we got in a school and they started jumping. We hit one with the bow of the boat and one practically hit the motor but we made it past unscathed. Further upriver we weren't so lucky, one carp hit an empty seat and broke the back off. Holy smokes, glad I wasn't sitting in that seat. Anyway we got into numerous schools, hit sseveral with the bow, I got slapped on the back by one but it wasn't a direct hit, so it didn't hurt. We also ran aground numerous times and had to get off the sand and we hit several submerged logs, it's a wonder we didn't rip the motor off the back of the boat. :yike:
-
Last night when I was sitting right at dark a big herd of hogs came in, I did my best to pick out a bigger one and got the crosshairs on him as good as I could, boom, pigs scattered but my pig got mixed into the massive flight out of sight and I lost track of him as they ran out of sight. I texted Chip who told "do not go in there looking till daylight in the morning, too many water moccasins". Ok, no problem waiting, I have seen them swimming in the waterhole. Sun is up good now, so I am going looking for my hog.
-
Pig down...... He didn't go far, too bad I couldn't go in the brush after him last night. Will try to salvage him.
-
Wow, what a cool experience!
-
Photo for :hello: the YAR member. :yeah: :yike: :chuckle:

Congrats on the pig!
Tell Chip hello for me.
That thing would look good on the wall with all your other game. I dont remember seeing a pig up there....

Bowfishing Whittington Lake (A Mississippi River Oxbow on the Delta)
We didn't get any real big gar, they were all about 18 to 36 inches. We managed to get 27 gar and 1 common carp for the boat and amazingly I shot 7 of the gar myself (should have been more, we should have had a 50 gar night). Brad the guy I went gar fishing with is going to put the skull of my first gar in his beetle pile and send it to me when it's done.
We saw a freakin huge spoonbill catfish right beside the boat, he was probably over 4 or 5 feet long and who knows how many pounds, he swam right under the boat, I could have stabbed him with an arrow in my hand he was so close, but you can't shoot them, we had to let him swim. :bash:
He was the craziest looking fish, I would loved to have plugged him, he was so close I could have even hit him. :chuckle:
We saw another huge fish that looked 5ish or so feet long from a distance, but not sure what he was, he didn't let us get close.
I had an absolute blast, Brad and Bradley were great guys to meet and fish with. When we first met and we got to talking on the way to the fishing hole I asked them "What do you do for a living?
Brad replied back "I'm a delivery boy!"
So what do you deliver?
"Babies!"
So then I asked Bradley what he does?
"I am the VD police, I work for the State Health Dept, as long as you are not on my list you are OK!"
That is how the night went, it was total fun in spite of the worst bugs and heat I have seen in a long time. If you look at the photos you can see I was sweating my tail off. I went from 60 degrees in Colville to 100 degrees in Miss, I have definitely been trying to adjust to the climate. :chuckle:
-
Cool pics! Looks like a fun trip.
-
Awesome Dale. Where in WI is your wife from? That's the homeland for me.
-
Another thing I got out of the way is the fact that I "aint no yankee", Washington was not part of the "Union". Actually it was all in fun, but there are some people down here that don't like yankees, I didn't want to take any chances. :chuckle:
People in the south are about the most courteous and accomodating people anywhere and they love good cooking. I have always enjoyed trips I have made to the south for these reasons. For example we din't have spaghetti, we had a speacial "baked spaghetti" and it was awesome as was all the other dishes I had here.
Catfishing the Tallahatchee River
(Not far from where Billy Joe jumped off the Tallahatchee Bridge, they tell me the song was based on a true story. This is also real close to where I was told the first shot of the civil war was fired.
Setlines and noodling (hand grabbing) are common here, I saw as many people fishing these ways as I did with fishing poles. We opted for the set line approach since I had so many activities lined up. This way while the lines were out I could go gar fishing and hog hunting. So we set the lines overnight and we caught a total of 9 catfish, 8 were keeper sized but we lost the biggest back into the river trying to haul him in the boat, he must have been over 30 pounds, a blue. The next biggest was roughly a 20 to 25 pound yellow and all the way down to about 4 or 5 pounds. There was a small catfish about 8 or 9 inches that we caught using 3 inch goldfish. We left him on the line for bait for bigger cats. :yike: :chuckle:
We caught flathead (yellow) catfish, blue catfish, channel catfish, and willow catfish. I think I got those names right, sort of confusing, I thought there was only a couple kinds. :chuckle:
I almost forgot to mention, we pulled in to check one line and a water moccasin dropped off the overhanging brush, he fell almost in the boat. :yike:
Just finished taking the last catfish picture a little while ago and I am leaving back to Wisconsin for the wedding reception, family reunion, and yes "MORE FISHING".
Here's some Mississippi catfish photos. Sorry I didn't do better on the pics, but I have been running hard and sleeping a few hours here and there. But so far "Mission Accomplished" and lots of new friends. Life doesn't get any better than that. :IBCOOL:
-
The colors in that last picture are pretty neat!
-
So is the green cat in the last picture a willow cat or is it something else?
-
Awesome Dale. Where in WI is your wife from? That's the homeland for me.
One of my guides lives in Madison and comes out every fall to Idaho, gonna meet him for a fishing trip hopefully tomorrow, then back to Eau Claire where the wife is from for all the family stuff.
Gotta hit the road, it's 900 miles of driving for me tonight. :yike:
Here's a few more pics of Mississippi...
-
That last fish photo I think is a yellow cat, but it could be the willow, I couldn't keep them straight. :chuckle:
-
looks like your having a blast. Keep living the dream.
-
Dang don't know how I missed it I was waiting for you to post about it! Looks like you had a killer time! That is great and a nice hog as well! Looks like you got into the fish as well :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:
-
I left miss at 6:30 pm and put the pedal to the metal. Only problem was I missed my turn to Madison and ended up in Chicago right at daybreak. :yike: finally worked through the traffic and headed for Madison, met Jeff and we hit his favorite shallows for muskies.. We waded fished, I caught a short nap on the dock then waded some more, but no fish. :hello:
-
I left the lake and headed back to eau Claire for family time. Last night my nice had her wedding reception, great time, tons of good food, my diet is totally out the window. :yike: :bdid:
-
Up this morning at 3am and drove back to Madison to meet up with Jeff and his musky fishing buddy Gary. We have been fishing 3 hrs, so far we have caught 1 largemouth, 2 walleye, and 5 northerners, I have literally reeled in 3 northetrns while doing these messages.
-
Another photo this morning
-
sweet- any size to the northerns. We used to catch those in michigan and what a blast when you get a bigger one.
PS - A big one to me was around 36inches but hey, we had fun. :chuckle:

The biggest northern I caught was 32", but had a blast catching them all and I released them to grow bigger.
-
Still cool to catch them. I have never caught one yet and hope to some day.
-
More photos of some of the northerns that we caught, I had a great time.

Our vacation has been awesome so far.
The wife went to an Indian Casino one night with several of her sisters and nieces. She hit a jackpot on a penny machine and won $2500. She gave each of her relatives that was with her an extra $100 to gamble with and she still left the casino with more than enough money to pay for our entire vacation.
:IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:
Also made it out musky fishing again, but still no muskies. We did catch a bunch of panfish and I caught a huge leatherback turtle on my ultralight rod, I thought I had mobydick on the line, can't beleive I didn't break the pole, he was about 16-18 inches across the back... :chuckle:
We were trying to pick him up for photos and he managed to bite the line and get away before I got any pictures at shore. :sry: :dunno:
Have had several poker games and been winning a few bucks most of the time, finally my luck ran out last night, I couldn't get good cards for nothing and when I did, somebody had better. I bet I lost $50 dollars last night. Fortunate for me the wife decided to play with us last night, she never plays poker, but boy did she have beginners luck. Near the end of the evening I put the jokers in the deck for a few hands when it was my turn to deal, I said "the jokers seem to bring me good luck". In one hand of "guts" the wife had both jokers, I'm telling you she was on a role. In spite of my poor performance we still added to the overall pile of change thanks to her. :chuckle:
-
Man that is sweet!!!!! Congrats to your wife, pretty darn lucky!!!
-
You can see the turtle in this photo, after he escaped he swam out in the middle of the river and surfaced....
-
Dale, did you happen to try the "ring" out of your hog like your Denmark friends suggest? LOL! Great Post on you trip!
-
Cool trip! I hunted hogs in TX awhile back. Always cool to see the different sights and hunting styles and the lifestyles of totally different states than were used to.

Too funny.... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Nope, no delicacy rings for this kid.... :yike:

The wife is driving, headed west, almost to N.D., gotta love a good sunset. :)
-
I bet I lost $50 dollars last night
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: "Betting" on how much money you lost gambling might tip your hat as having a problem. :hello:

I guess I do have a gambling problem, I am a small businessman in America. :chuckle:

Spent the last 1 1/2 days in Montana, had to visit with ranchers, taxidermist, and do some organization for my MT hunts. I was really dissappointed in the current antelope situation. Areas where I would see hundreds of antelope anytime in the past, we only saw a very few. I will keep my antelope hunting scaled back to nothing for another year or two and hopefully they will multiply.
Working on adding some additional mule deer hunting (trophy hunts and meat hunts) to what we already have, and possibly some more cougar and elk hunting. Also inspected one of the buffalo herds that we hunt, they are looking good, lots of calves, numerous 2 and 3 year olds ready for this fall and we have an impressive 10 yr old breeder bull that is going to make someone an excellent mount.
Last night on the way home we witnessed one car crash and saw another wreck, the first was north of Missoula on a straight stretch of freeway. My wife says "I think someone just wrecked", I'm like naw, somebody probably was spinning aound on that dirt road right beside the freeway. We slowed down and the dust cleared, there was a new looking chevy truck that had rolled, two guys were trying to get out. Lots of people were stopping so I said "lets go' and we headed for WA.
We started up Lookout pass and on the sharp "S curves" someone was going too fast, you could see they hit the center concrete barrier and bounced over into the ditch and rolled. Two girls were talking to a cop by the car and one ambulance was leaving with lights on. Crazy, I never see that much carnage going through MT.
The one thing I didn't get accomplished on this trip, no musky, so I guess that is what I will concentrate on in two years when we go to the next reunion. But wow, we had a great time, it was nice to get away, I got to do a lot of fun things, my wife got to spend a lot of time with her family, but as always, it was nice to get back home.

Look like you had an epic journey! In the last string of photos, 5th pic down, is that fish a Sheephead?

Yes, that day we caught some sheephead, a bunch of smallmouth, and some other silver fish that we did not klnow what it was. We just threw them all back.
I wished I would have snapped a photo of the turtle when we had him on the bank trying to get ahold of him.
-
Some photos of the buffalo that we will be shooting this fall.
