Been there a long time ago...missed a 180 class deer at 7 yards. Yup SEVEN yards (with a bow) Hit a 1/4" willow limb and deflected over his back.Really cool place to be. Don't know how it has been lately.....

That is arguably one of the best Mule Deer Hunts in the State, many record book deer have come out of that unit.  I havent drawn it before, but it is a tough hunt,  steep country and open ground.  I would rather have my 300wsm for that unit! good luck to you

I have hunted it twice and it was a fantastic experience both times even though I walked away with my tag intact. Spot and stalk archery, BIG country, the steens is fun! You will have a blast.

You won't need a ton of info from others. Drive to the top, start glassing the breaks and the canyons.  Spot bucks and decide if you want to head down that far into a steep canyon.

When you are there keep you eyes peeled for my GPS. In a camp pouch in a big grassy bowl off the right hand side of the road toward the top. There will be a bunch of antelope there that ruined a stalk on a nice 4x4 and I blame them for losing my GPS as well. :chuckle:

The stars at night up there are unreal. Its some pretty country. Good trout fishing at the bottom, wild horses, I love it there. It just went to a draw hunt two or three years ago. Too bad.

I bow hunted the Steens before it went to draw only. Drive to the top and set up a base camp. I would back pack out of base camp for two or three day trips. We had our most action about half way down the mountain. Plan on doing a lot of glassing. There is not a lot of water so if you find a spring you should be good to go. We saw some dandy Bucks, Bulls, Rams and even a speed goat or two. Swirling winds are what killed us but we did end up with a couple of decent bucks. We tried to kill one buck that was very heavy, 28 inches and in the 190s!!! You might not see much from the top so get down about half way and you should see lots of game. Good luck it is beautiful country.

My neighbor and his brother drew the modern rifle last year... They went out on horses for a week and put down lots of miles . . Very Very few animals due to the high numbers of cougars. Its not what it used to be.
