This not a new topic, but a new thread.
Where do you prefer hunting grouse...down low for the ruffed grouse
or
Up High for the blues?
Explain... show images...KILL THEM ALL, LET THE CHEF SORT THEM OUT!
-
Up high for the blues!!! Why? Because there's no better way to spend the day in the mountains.
-
-
I grew up grouse hunting, high, low, and in between, rifle, shotgun, pistol, and bow..... :chuckle:
-
Nice wall bear paw!
blue grouse - ruffed grouse- famous grouse... its so hard to choose :dunno:. kinda seasonal for me, I like getting high in september specifically for blues and then mainly stay low for ruffs the rest of the season.
Im going to head to ND and MT this fall and try for prairie grouse. I really want a big bull sage on my wall, maybe I will try for a grouse slam this year.

Any Grouse for me.

I find it better to send my kids to the bottom of the canyon to retrieve them.... :chuckle:
Blues are best....

Dog doesn't seem to care what color they are, we have better luck down low though.
This was the first real bird Beamer ever retrieved

years ago I dropped a grouse just above the Fortsen hole on the stillaguamish. I waited for it to drift through the pool before sending the dog after it, but I still got some dirty looks from the steelheaders :tung:
-
Some great images so far!
However, with all the page views, I'm wondering of a handful of people keep coming back here because the poll results don't reflect much voting
:bash: :dunno:

I voted and keep coming back. Guess you can say im lurking. The pictures you guys are throwing up are great. They make me wish I'd taken the time to snap a couple myself. I saw a couple of grouse today while out scouting and one of them was a jumbo.
-
Prefer the blues, but won't pass on a spruce or a ruffed if it presents itself.

Actually, in the top photo of the second post, I'm packing a .41 Magnum Blackhawk with the double barrel Beretta, and in the lower image, it's a Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt with a Benelli semi-auto
The image of me with the big handgun...yep, that's a Taurus .22 Magnum.

I had a .41 mag Blackhawk. It was a great gun, I never should have sold it... Have you shot many grouse with yours?

Ahhh, nice going:
You just published images proving that you had a loaded gun ON a motorized vehicle, which is a no-no under our game regs.
:bdid:

I've only shot one grouse with a .41 magnum. Really bad idea.
Not much left.
Go with a .22, .32 or .38 at the most.
-
Didn't they make a rule change so that you could use a Rig so that you could "post up" using it as a rest?
-
I don't think that law was in effect last grouse season. But I don't exactly see where that vehicle and those grouse were in WA. Could be Idaho. :dunno: It was only the last pic that shows it is loaded (unless you can tell in the other pics somehow).

I got lucky and made a good shot on the one in the pic I posted. Neck shot with a .44mag. He cooked up great for a snack before dinner at camp.

From the regs" (page 65)
Loaded Firearms in a Vehicle
"It is illegal to carry, convey, transport, possess,
or control a loaded shotgun or rifle in or on any
motor vehicle. A rifle or shotgun containing shells
or cartridges in either the chamber or magazine,
or a muzzleloading firearm that is loaded and
capped or primed is considered loaded."
It's easy to miss but it's clear. Having a loaded gun on a hood of a rig is technically illegal. Having a "discussion" with a gamie over the logic of this is likely to not be productive. I've heard of guys getting busted for even having a loaded shotgun leaning against a bumper....again, technically ON the vehicle.

:bdid:
Did I miss something? There is a mag in the Ruger - but is the mag loaded? No way of telling by the photo -
-
Yes, you can see what appears to be .22 LR in the see through mag in the last picture.
SpecialT I believe is talking about this law change.
1 Sec. 28. RCW 77.15.460 and 1999 c 258 s 7 are each amended to read
2 as follows:
3 (1) A person is guilty of unlawful possession of a loaded ((firearm
4 in a motor vehicle)) rifle or shotgun in a motor vehicle, as defined in
5 RCW 46.04.320, or upon an off-road vehicle, as defined in RCW
6 46.04.365, if:
7 (a) The person carries, transports, conveys, possesses, or controls
8 a rifle or shotgun in ((or on)) a motor vehicle, or upon an off-road
9 vehicle, except as allowed by department rule; and
10 (b) The rifle or shotgun contains shells or cartridges in the
11 magazine or chamber, or is a muzzle-loading firearm that is loaded and
12 capped or primed.
13 (2) A person is guilty of unlawful use of a loaded firearm if:
14 (a) The person negligently ((shoots)) discharges a firearm from,
15 across, or along the maintained portion of a public highway; or

17 vehicle or from upon a moving off-road vehicle.
18 (3) Unlawful possession of a loaded ((firearm in)) rifle or shotgun
19 in a motor vehicle or upon an off-road vehicle, and unlawful use of a
20 loaded firearm ((is a)) are misdemeanors.
21 (4) This section does not apply if the person:
22 (a) Is a law enforcement officer who is authorized to carry a
23 firearm and is on duty within the officer's respective jurisdiction;
24 (b) Possesses a disabled hunter's permit as provided by RCW
25 77.32.237 and complies with all rules of the department concerning
26 hunting by persons with disabilities; or
27 (c) Discharges the rifle or shotgun from upon a nonmoving motor
28 vehicle or a nonmoving off-road vehicle, as long as the engine is
29 turned off and the motor vehicle or off-road vehicle is not parked on
30 or beside the maintained portion of a public road, except as authorized
31 by the commission by rule.
32 (5) For purposes of subsection (1) of this section, a ((firearm))

I think a more interesting poll would be how many guys just drive around and shoot grouse from the road vs. getting out on foot and actually hunting for them?
-
Wow. I guess I should come check this thread more often. You guys have some eagle eyes. But it is not illegal to have a loaded weapon in your place of abode, who's to say that picture was not taken in my shop. I would think my constitutional right to bear arms in defense of myself and property would matter here. Just saying. If a game warden would like to try to make a case from a picture taken several years ago he can contact me and I will cooperate to the fullest extent that I can. Maybe you guess should nit pick someone else's pics know. Thanks to those of you who were playing devils advocate.
-
This is why people should just stop sharing pictures online :dunno: not worth the hassles
-
So...... I what do you guys say we start talkin about grouse again???? Only two more months and we can start shootin 'em

Good plan. I saw a couple real nic blues this morning while scouting for elk. Seems like the are always around when you're not hunting them. Soon though...
-
Uh ohhhhh looks like the e-police are out early this season.
I like all of the pictures and i see nothing wrong with any of them. Good job fellow grousers.
-

Nah...that's a bigger no-no.
:chuckle:
And for those who believe I'm playing "internet cop,' what I'm actually doing is educational...and trying to keep people from getting pinched.
Back in my early days at the old Fishing & Hunting News, we ran a photo of a guy with a beautiful elk he supposedly killed somewhere open to hunting, but a sharp-eyed game cop looked at the image, determined the vegetation was wrong and could only grow in a certain area.. and he actually found the spot where this numbskull had killed the animal inside Mount Rainier National Park.
I'd rather not see that sort of thing happen to anybody here.
So, watch them images. Be sure to be legal before you push the camera clicker.
And send your photos to NORTHWEST SPORTSMAN magazine.

Couple grouse with the 16 gauge.

Down low. More action typically and I enjoy watching the dog work.

Keep em' coming guys! Here is a cute one, my sons first "retrieve" ! I tied a string on it for carry since he thought it was sort of "yucky"....:chuckle:

Geez Dale...
I could really learn to hate a guy who finds this kind of grouse hunting.
:chuckle:
And today I got an assignment from one of my regular magazines to test a handsome new import O/U shotgun. I am hoping it shows up in time for the grouse opener.
YEE HAW!!!!!
-
I will help you test that new gun.....i might just buy it if it passes the rigorous Workman testing. :)

For the rest of you, this is a new O/U import from Mossberg and it's a beaut, from what I am told. The test piece is a 12-ga but they are also available in 20- and .410, from what I am told.
I'll post images with dead things when they become available.

I find that offensive.

oh it is, now the niche they are trying to fill is the "affordable" (reads cheap) gun every day joe's can buy, some of these guns are almost disposable they are put together so poorly.
gun manufacturers found out if you can slap two heavy barrels on top of each other and find a good stout chunk of 2x4 for the stock and then raise the price point up to around $500 ( if it costs more it must be better) for these guns people will be standing in line for them like government cheese. IMO the mossberg silver reserve is a prime example.
there are some O/U's that are tremendous value at around $500 - even less, but the mossbergs are not one of them. also for a gun company that boasts about being made in america I don't know why they stooped to getting these O/U and SxS's made in russia and now Turkey...I would run from a mossberg O/U like my balls were on fire.

there are some O/U's that are tremendous value at around $500 - even less, but the mossbergs are not one of them. also for a gun company that boasts about being made in america I don't know why they stooped to getting these O/U and SxS's made in russia and now Turkey...I would run from a mossberg O/U like my balls were on fire.
I ain't no gun snob. I'll shoot grouse with my o/u stoeger all day long!
I am glad reading comp is still going strong in WA. no where did I mention stoeger or any other value priced gun besides mossberg in my post. I even said there are some good ones at that price point and lower.

If snob means someone who won't throw away his money on a clunky disposable shotgun, then a snob I am.

Here's a sooty grouse from a couple weeks ago up in the Mt Rainier area.

"Sooty" grouse?
That's a BLUE grouse....and the dumb asses who decided arbitrarily to change it to something else ought to be dragged nekkid up and down the rocky bottom of the Cispus River.
I heard some dipstick refer to them as "dusky" grouse too.
These ignorant pricks. They ought to go practice game biology on another continent.
Nice image, though. Telephoto lens, eh?

:chuckle: I'll never get used to the change either. They'll always be blue grouse to me. But they split them into two separate species, dusky grouse and sooty grouse.
Grouse Ecology
Dusky and Sooty Grouse (Blue Grouse) Ecology
Dusky grouse and sooty grouse were first described by Lewis and Clark in the early 1800s. In the 1900s, they were combined into a single ‘blue grouse’ species. In 2006, the American Ornithologists Union ‘split’ the blue grouse into the dusky and sooty grouse. Despite the name change, dusky and sooty grouse can be difficult for many people to recognize. The two species have subtle differences in appearance and behavior and little overlap in distribution; sooty grouse generally are found in the relatively moist west-side habitats, while dusky grouse occupy drier east-side habitats.
Dusky and sooty grouse are found throughout western North America. Their range extends from the southern portions of Alaska and the Yukon, south along the Pacific Coast to northern California and east to the Rocky Mountains (New Mexico to Alberta). In Washington, dusky and sooty grouse are found in mountainous areas wherever open coniferous forests are present. They are closely associated with true fir and Douglas fir forests in winter and habitats that are often more open during summer.
Male dusky and sooty grouse perform a hooting display when they are on breeding territories during the spring. Each hooting display consists of a sequence of 5-7 low frequency ‘hoots’ that are detectable from 100 meters (dusky grouse) to more than 2 kilometers (sooty grouse). The males of both species also utter a single ‘whoot’ note when they are displaying to a female that is detectable from about 2 kilometers. Male dusky grouse perform a ‘flutter jump’ which is a loud flight that is detectable from about 1 kilometer. Male sooty grouse exhibit a similar behavior called ‘landing on loud wing’ display where they create an unusually loud noise at the end of a short flight, often while landing in a tree.

If you ever hear me call them sooty or dusky, please slap me........ 8) :)
-
I thought it was "dusty grouse",....what happens when you forget and try again to bag one with your deer rifle.... "dusty grouse" :dunno:
-
Watch out.....don't give W dept of fish and WILDLIFE any bright ideas on 'discovering' some recessive genetic mutation that must be preserved at all costs. Since there is a historical record of observation by L&C, it's a shoe in. That'll ad another 22 pages for the regulation book.
Up in Alaska, we call them hooters and shoot them with 22's in the spring time. "Oh the horror".
-
Sorry - but they're different :chuckle:
-
They will always be a "Blue Grouse" to me.... However you can totally tell the difference between the 2 species. The "Dusky Grouse" are more gray and the "Sooty Grouse" are more brown. We've ALL shot both of them and probably not even paid attention and I'm sure they taste the same too.
I love me some BLUE GROUSE though. I would shoot Blues over Ruffed Grouse any day.
Cant wait till Sept. 1st!!!!

Nothing to get used to. These jerks didn't get my permission, nor did they consult with me before arbitrarily deciding to do this. Screw them. Their dusky sooty crap doesn't register. Doesn't count. :bash:
Blue grouse is blue grouse. Always have been, always will be.

The name game..seriously getting upset because they changed the name?
These are spruce, francolin, or fools hens. Are you upset because they are known by three different names?

stupid jerk biologists, what the hell do they know anyway? I bet Obama had something to do with the name change :puke:

I think he meant to say " Them's is rough grouse..." as in rough looking - Lee please smooth out the feathers on your birds before a photo shoot. :chuckle:

I've had better luck when it;s raining but I'm going this weekend anyways.
-
I'm excited! Can't wait till morning! Probably won't get any sleep tonight.
-
Blue or Rough don't realy care much.
First pic was from a few years back. Two blue and a rough, they flushed from down hill and I managed to get two with the ol single shot on the wing. The third landed uphill, so I hiked up and kicked it outa bed it flushed down hill and dropped it right where the other two were laying. Last year of the three grouse limit.
Next pic is from last year, popped a double on two ruffs with my late uncle's old auto5.
Almost forgot grouse opened up tomarrow. Damn month of sept, now I can't decide what to do, arrow a deer shoot some grouse or go catch some TUNA!
-
Thunder chicken down! Me and little one headed up to Greenwater for the afternoon hunt on the opener. Small bird with one very full craw.
-
We saw two blues and a ruffed today, but were hunting for bear and/or deer, so they are still alive.
-
The skunk is off!
Went out on the opener with Glockster and we brought law and order to the rogue thunder chickens. Saw a fair number of birds, and we introduced them to 20-gauge No. 6s.
-
I managed to put one in the bag. I made a snap shot as it zipped through an opening and I saw it angle down, but not fall hard. I sent my dog after it and she came out with the bird. As I was reaching out for it, another launched out of a tree about 20 yards behind me. I managed to whiff two shots at it and watched it sail off for another day.

Yeah, tell me about it. I also got surprised by a few that I didn't even fire at.
But on the upside, it appears that on the east slope, blue grouse had a pretty good hatch. We only saw one brood of ruffed grouse and they were pretty young.
As we all know, it is really...REALLY dry. We hunted as close to water sources as possible. But when I got home and washed my truck, there was enough dirt to start a new vegetable garden! :chuckle:
============
On another note, I am disturbed by the snail's pace at which the Forest Service is repairing road damage on Manastash Creek. They can spend a fortune BLOCKING roads (and we found a couple where they did just that, perhaps to prevent some folks from getting around the washouts via 4WD) but they haven't seemed to put in the same amount of enterprise getting roads back open.
One of the main routes across the Taneum was blocked, and the road between Manastash camp and Buck Meadows is STILL not open, 18 months after the washouts.
-
Well, I hunted most of the day, saturday. I was just about ready to call it, when I spotted a grouse about 20 yrds ahead. As I went to flush it, another one flushed from my right, and flew right in front of me. That's the one I got.
Love the stories and pics. Keep them coming!
-
Forrest rover, I would have got it with the front spoke of my wheel! :chuckle: nice bird.
-
Got one Monday morning when a buddy and I were riding around looking for them. First one flew up ito a tree, and my buddy tried a head shot with his .17 HM2. He missed, and when it flew I blasted it with my 410 with #4s. Should have got one more of the 4, but I forgot to lead another one... :chuckle:
-
Well, made it over for the evening of the opener and all day sunday, and managed to bag four birds. We hiked are butts off to get em, and we only saw 10-12 grouse all weekend, but it was worth it to just get out in the woods and shoot a few birds in the process!! :IBCOOL:
-

Ha Ha... I like your thinking, Special T!
Major Caruncles, 10 or 12 grouse sightings in a weekend doesn't sound too bad! Congrats on the birds that you shot! :)
-
And here's a shot of our good pal, Glockster, who put a dent in the Kittitas County grouse population with a handsome Franchi 20-gauge that we were field testing for an article in an upcoming issue of Northwest Sportsman.
Nobody can criticize this guy's ability as a wingshooter.
I cannot, however, brag about his choice of hunting partners. :chuckle:
I will now discuss our table fare: Grouse Parmesan. We boiled up a good pot of angel hair pasta, then turned it down to simmer and added an ample amount of Ragu (your mileage may vary, and you may want to use something else).
While Brian cut up some fresh onion from my garden and crushed up a fresh garlic clove, I breasted out two of our birds from the opener, both blue grouse (not "dusky" or "sooty" but definitely dead) and added them to the pot, turning up the heat. The breasts cooked up in a few minutes and then we dug in, after sprinkling everything with ground Parmesan. Delicious.
It's even tastier if one adds a bit of sea salt and/or seasoning salt to the breasts a few minutes before cooking. And, for those who might like a glazed surface, stick the breasts over an open flame just long enough to brown up the surface, and then drop them into the pot with pasta and sauce. Be quick because one does not wish to over-cook a grouse breast.
-
We saw two blues and a ruffed today, but were hunting for bear and/or deer, so they are still alive.
And we're to also presume the deer and bear likewise continue walking on this side of the grass?

Nice Blue from this morning with the Ol' 870

That's a nice bird Skybuster. I haven't seen a mature one like yours on the hoof this season....yet.
