Title: Dial in Sights.... Your Thoughts?
Post by: MDGrand on June 20, 2012, 08:52:49 AM
Hi everyone...

I am contemplating going to a dial in bow sight like the ones offered by Trijicon or HHA.. Currently, I have a 5 pin sight that is great!.. BUT.. I do see the advantage and clarity of having 1 sight dialed..

Can anyone give any feedback if they have any one of these set ups and/or if they changed from a multi pin sight?

Thanks!

I have an hha I use for 3d and I really like it. For hunting tho I stick with a pin sight.

My experience is far less than most but I agree with the above post. I have shot bows with a fixed pin on the flat range and thought it worked well. Nice to adjust to a know distance. However, I dont' think I could range, acquire my aim point, adjust the pin, re adjust if the animal moves, and make a good shot. I can do a few but not without making noise, spooking the animal, or blowing the shot during a hunting situation.

Get the best of both worlds and get a Boss/Tommy or Hawgfather in 5 or 7 pin or the newer HHA 5 pin adjustable.  MBG also makes a multiple pin slider sight.  That way you have 3/5/7 pins for hunting type applications and also have the wheel for 3D or if you're wanting to shoot further.   You just designate a pin to use when you use the wheel, and make sight tapes accordingly. :twocents: If you're interested, I have a 5 pin Boss in the classifieds.

I shoot Black Gold Ascents for both target and hunting.  For hunting I have it set at 30 yards.  I practice with it from 15 - 40 yards with the sight set at 30.  I know how high or low I need to aim if the target is not at 30.  Of course having a fairly fast bow helps reduce aim compensation.  For example, at 20 yards I aim about 6 inches low and for 40, about 8 inches high.  Anyway, works for me.

Moveable multipins are great. As mentioned above, Montana BG, SpottHog and HHA all make quality sights in these categories. Just put a MBG Ascent on my rig and it's awesome! SureLoc also makes a moveable multipin. If having all of your axis's properly adjusted is a concern, I'd lean towards MBG or SureLoc; on the higher end as far as price but well worth it imo.

Thanks for the info JG... Where did you buy your Ascent? Looking for the best price. Also, for the sight tape area... does it come with a sight numbered tape or how does that work exactly?

Im now debating between the Tru Glo Range Rover and the MBG Acent 1 pin..

Thoughts between the two?

The Range Rover is cheaper, but has a BIG Aperture in 1.8" and a 1 finger adjustment knob.

The MBG has a dial of death that wont move once you get to the yardage you want, which I can see is a bonus.... not sure on how big the aperture is.. ???

I have never liked the single pin for hunting. To much movement to adjust the thing. if you have a pin set at 30 at full draw and the animal spokes and runs to 50. Then its more of a guessing game on where to hold the pin without letting down. I know guys that hunt with them and do well. Just to many extra movements and things that can happen.

For 3d shoots and competion they are the cat's meow. Even though most times I shoot my hunting bow with my hunting setup.

g5 has a fix pin with a second mover works well because you can set the second to 50 and still have your go to pin at 30 or so.

I run a 4 pin ascent. Best of both worlds. Fixed to 50 and dial a prayer past that. I usually practice to 80 and 110 if alone at the range. Makes 20-30 yard shots automatic and very easy. Black gold will custom build anything you want including pin size and color.
