Just wondering where all the entait tag holders are hiding. I haven't seen any one posting they drew this year. :dunno:
-
Did you mean to post this in the deer hunting threads? To the best of my knowledge, the Entiat does not have any drawings for elk? :dunno:
-
Yes, sent a pm to get it changed over to the deer topic

Thank you for moving this for me Carp.

My 12 year old son drew the Quality rifle tag. He's pretty excited.
-
Sandy, The guy who gave you some moose info last year, got the Entiat tag.
-
Some nice bucks in there, congrats on the tag
-
Eniat is like an east side c post for big bulls. guaranteed.

I saw a nice bull shed a couple years ago in the entiat. If the other side was similar in size it would have been a 300" bull easy.
-
Congrats to the lucky tag holders! I'm jealous was hoping to draw the late bow guess, I will be sitting on the sidelines watching from home to see posts of how people did. We seen lots of good bucks last year during and after the bow season that made it through. So i think its going to be a good year!
-
A buddy drew the late rifle tag, phool, I'd love to see a shot of that buck in the clear adn not in the trees, I know you got one, lets see it!

He's weak on the left side. That's why he didn't post it.

Weak? I think he is pretty solid, even with the broken tines. You probably wouldn't want to waist your tag on him unless it was the last day though right. ;)
-
Dont forget about the 6" extra that you can't see in this shot too. 8)
-
That's a stud buck right there.
-
Here was a nice buck that we seen last year except for the broken main beam, but he should be bigger this year!
-
Here are a few more pictures of some different bucks.

Buck from 2 years ago.

Thanks for the pictures. My son is so excited for this hunt. We are planning on hunting 9 days towards the end of the season.

Muzzlebuck your mount turned out awesome waiting to get my moose back for Dan. My cousin also drew they same tag you had last year hopefully we can find a buck as nice as yours.

I think the last part of the season is the best few people and better bucks moving in. i should be back from Colorado by then so if you need an extra set of eyes would be glad to help out on the weekend. Tell your son congrats and good luck this fall!

I saw it too, and it was for sure a decent bull. it's possible it came from the other side of the road though. saw some elk sign up tyee last year when i was hunting.

A friend of mine drew the late rifle Entiat with 12 points.

Those are some great bucks guys.

My father drew a late modern tag this year. I'm stoked for him. He helped me out a lot on my 09 late teanaway permit. Really looking forward to repaying him. He's been hunting for many years and this might be his last oppurtunity at a quality tag. We hunt region g in WY a bit so he might have a chance at a bigger buck there but this will definately be a big hunt for him. Can't wait for Nov, really excited.
-
I shot my first buck at the old age of
8. love your dad till the end he's the reason I climbed hiked biked and killed! Some fishing in there too! :) That unit holds a special place in my heart!
-
I drew the entiat deer tag this year.just wondering if anybody knows a good place to start scouting or if the whole unit is about the same.
-
If there is snow the hunting is good, if there is snow the roads are bad. There is a ton of information on this hunt if you use the websites search option. Good luck and I hope to see a story about your hunt.
-
It's all the same :twocents:
-
get off the couch and go look butch.
-
Butch,
Welcome to the site. Concentrate your scounting on the southeastern portion of the unit. Won't be a lot of deer in the area until the first week of Nov. So don't get discouraged, they will come.

Not wanting to burst anyones bubble here but I have some bad news about the Entiat and the future trophy potential of this great area. I've heard from a reliable source that our Native American friends took 27 bucks out of this area last winter. Apparently it's primarily one guy(and his pals), not the whole tribe and he's specifically trophy hunting. Those of you who are familiar with this problem will be reminded of the once good Clockum elk herd. In both case the quality of the trophy animals was built up through the limited entry permit process ( and the sacrifice...of all of the hunters hoping for our "big chance" at getting drawn) only to have the rug yanked out from under us once the potential really got good.
I'm not trying to hijack this thread just letting all of you lucky tag holders that your' tag may not be as good as it could be. Unfortunately. :sry:
-
I drew the late archery tag, Nov 21st to 30th. Will be spending some time in there after early archery elk trying to find my buck! First time I drew this late tag, and with only 3pts! Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
ET
-
I've heard the indians have been in the area but I spent 10 days in there 2 years ago during the rut hunting and never saw any??

Sure did a hell of a job, and great first post...
Great tag man - good luck out there!
-
Thats why its permit. The deer have been being shot that way for many many years. Sad to say.

thats a waste of time they wont be any where near the same place come nov.

Thanks Coach. Sorry, I meant that I understand a few of the areas they will be at come Nov. and will be going over to familiarize myself with the area.

-
I drew the late archery tag as well, can't wait.
-
ET, still a good idea as you say to get over there and familiarize yourself with the road system and get out and hike around as there are some nice hiding spots that can never be seen from a road. I am sure you will be suprised when you get back for the actual hunt as to how narrow and slick the roads get with the snow. Good luck to all of you guys and remember if you would shoot it on the last day you might want to shoot it on day one unless you are okay with eating the tag.
-
thanks guys for the input.as far as the indians i think there are still good bucks around i hope.and as for u dry creek i will see u in a couple of months.

why hunt with other people when come december ur the only ones shooting bucks. Should hang around for ten days mid winter.

I agree with muzzlebuck. Don't shoot something on the first day just because you would be happy shooting it on the last day. Set a goal and stick to it until the last day or two. It's very easy to kill a 22-24" wide 4x4 on this hunt everyday. Even without snow.
-

The indians are not the only ones shooting deer in there in December, there are some locals that prefer to hunt that time of year too.

I am just saying a guy I know passed up 24" deer everyday waiting for a 180" deer and the last 3 days didn't see anything over 20", ended up shooting a 19" 3x4. After the hunt he said he should have shot one of the many 24" deer he saw in the beggining. I am well aware you can't shoot the big one if you are skinning a little one but be ready to eat your tag if you are going to hold out for a 170"-180" deer.

i would definitely hold out for a big deer. when i had the archery tag in 08, i was seeing multiple nice bucks every day and they were different bucks every day as well. you never know what the next day could bring whether it be the rut kicking in or two feet of snow. patience is the key i feel in these migratory permit hunts. its just harder for the average joe hunter who's used to shooting the first legal three point they come across to suddenly passing up multiple nice four points daily. that's how it was for me anyway.
-
If your happy with the buck you see shoot it. If not find a bigger one
-
Shoot a deer on the first day that you would be happy with on the last? :bdid:
LOL! WOW! Moving on... :sry:
Lived just to the south of this unit growing up and all I can say.... I would give my left n^t for this tag! HOLD OUT till you find a STUD! Hunt hard and expect slick roads. I would buy some chains just in case! Everyone that I have known to draw this tag has had no problem finding 180+ inch deer with this tag. DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT shoot a bucky you would be happy with in another unit. IMO this is the best late tag this state has to offer, at this point. I would happily eat this tag knowing I had the chance at a TRUE GIANT rather than tag out early on another 24 inch 4 x 4. People take the long odds of this tag for the BIG boys, not the run of the mill 4 x 4. I would GLADLY eat this tag with no deer at all, for the chance of the booners there. Mark my words, you WILL NOT shoot a big one, if you choose to tag a smaller one. This is your chance! Make it count, hunt hard, and good luck! :IBCOOL:

you may need to bring shane wilkins with you butch to kill that 180 buck? your guide.

Butch you probaly should just mail that permit to CJT with a note and we will take care of it for you. Dry Creek will send a picture when the job is done!

-
i would send u guys the tag lunchbox but u and drycreek would shoot the first thing u guys see.remember i have hunted with both of u.hope u can make it down there more eyes the better.i need to get one bigger than drycreek.or at least one for the wall.

If you are going for a "true giant" hold out until the last minute, there is no point to hunting your arse off and then shooting a small one on the last morning wait until the last minute of the evening hunt and if it doesn't happen be happy you gave it your all. You can't get a true giant if you give up and drop a 160 on the last morning. In the last 10 years there have only been 8 grossing over 180 entered into the big game record book, maybe they are everywhere and people just keep them to themselves after dropping one. Each year I only see a couple that get posted on hear that are over 180 and they are raffle tags or govenor tags. I think a 180 deer is tougher to get than most people think.
MLBowhunter said it best,"If you are happy with the buck you see shoot it. If not find a bigger one." That's how I got both of mine, they are 160 and both shot on opening day with a bow. Maybe I could have got bigger ones if I would have waited but I am happy with them, they look great on the wall and I have great memories of both hunts with friends and family.
-
I would not get to hung up on the score of the animal and just go for the wow factor!! Cause it is very hard to find a 180 + buck, not saying that they are not there. But out of all the tag holders this year with the entait tag. I would say maybe two to three bucks will be over 180. But it still is an awesome tag. You will see lots of animals and have a great time.
-
:yeah:
You will see tons of deer and if you are rifle hunter it is awesome to see so many shootable deer each day. And score is not what it is really about, hopefully you will shoot the biggest deer of your life and have great memories of the hunt. Definately go for the wow factor, you will know what a "trophy" is to you when you see it. Don't let anyone tell you "I've seen bigger". I hear it all the time about my deer from my friends but none of them have bigger ones on the wall. I hope someday they do and I hope I am there with them when they connect on the buck of their lifetime. Enjoy the hunt, take it all in, invite friends and family to come along and enjoy the experience with you. Good luck to everyone.

I would have to disagree a little bit, but you are close. If there is 1 buck over 180 inches GROSS harvested out of any of the three units(chiwawa, entiat and swakane) I would be very impresed.
-
Out of the 100+ sheds I found this year and the other couple hundred that I seen come out of those units, maybe 2 sheds that would be in the 180" mark, very tuff to do this day in age. They still are awsome tags to have to have a quality hunt with out the people.
-
deerdog has one on video that was later shot .That being said he spent a ton of time in there and thats the only one he saw over 180.I spent a few wkends in there and it was alot of fun seeing all the deer in washington.
-
I had the rifle tag two years ago. It was a blast. My first rut hunt in WA. Didn't get optimal weather but still saw tons of deer. I shot this guy at about 120 yards. Watched him with some buddies for about 15 minutes before deciding I wanted a closer look :chuckle: No regrets, I'll keep building points for other rut hunts but in the meantime I'll be chasing whitetails with my bow and putting in for good muley hunts in other states. My dad was able to get the whole thing on video also which is cool to have.

You guys think that everyone that kills the biggest buck of their life is gonna hop on the internet and post "WOW YOU GUYS BETTER APPLY FOR MY FAVORITE TAG!" Nope! LOL! As a native to this area, I ASSURE you, you have every opportunity at a 180 inch deer. This means taking roads that arent on the map, getting out of the truck, and hikin and hunting HARD! This is not a give me hunt for BIG deer like most people thought I was saying. No hunt is. But you WILL have the opportunity to hunt where the big bucks are. Pray for early weather to get the high migratory bucks moving. Oh yeah and look for areas some of the other permit holder DONT want to hunt. All it takes this time of year is ONE hot doe!
-
Muleysniper,
I remember that buck well, just couldn't talk Luke into shooting it :chuckle: Sure was fun watching you shoot it!
I would have dropped it in a heartbeat! Love the extra.

I bet there is only a handful of 180 Gross bucks in the unit. Is 180 do able? YES Likely? NO.

R u kiddin me? I find it hard to believe there's maybe 2,3 or even 4 bucks in the whole entiat valley that would be pushin 180" mark!! Impressive that you either found Er got ta see every shed that came outa the entiat this year!! No wonder I can't ever find any!!
-
I don't think he is joking and I agree with him. Just look at all the time the governor/ raffle tags guys spend every year to find a 180 buck. If there was one in every major canyon they wouldn't have to try so hard. 180 is an easy number to say but honestly most peoples 180 is a solid high 160's buck. I wouldn't say there are only 2 or 3 but there isn't 10+ bucks that are that big.
-
I think this went around last year to , I believe JJ had the realilistic numbers of how many 180 bucks live in wa. Id say between 25-50 state wide .
-

Didnt say I saw every shed but betweent the sheds I found, 3-4 other buddys found the number is way up there. The biggest that I know of 80" and with a spread or main beam width it would be close. Like ol Bo Patterson has said a few times, its 500 + deer to see a 180", 1000+ deer for a 190" and forget the 200" mark
I have and do spend alot of time up there in those units and there are great dont get me wrong I would love to draw a tag(i have to put in for em 1st) but the mind some folks have about 180" bucks around every corner is crazy, I have seen some 160-170" class bucks that I would have sworn would have scored way better, but end up being passers. I believe Brad saw around 400 + bucks or more on the 2010 raffle before he found the buck he ended up shooting.
-
I've seen a couple nice bucks taken out of there.... ;) But i would look else were, maybe try up north. :)

I agree with you antlerking, realisticly there will proably only be one if that, just saying at best maybe two to three. I'm just saying maybe on the fact that last year I seen three bucks with the potential to maybe make it to the 180 mark this year. The first buck that I seen I guessed would score 170, the second I guessed would score 175, and the three I guessed would score 190, but he was killed by the governor tag last year so he is out of the picture for this year. Now for the IF's...
If neither of this deer got harvested last year during the last part of the bow season.
If they survived the winter.
If they did not get poached.
If they can put on the 5 to 10 inches of bone to get the to the 180 mark.
If we have the weather to push they down during the hunting season.
Notice that I said the word guess and yes on this site I realize that is a deadly word. but I truly believe that those two bucks would score extremely close within 2" either way. But I'm no Doyle moss and I have guessed wrong before, but usually error on the safer side. Its easy to tell someone they are shooting a 23" wide 140 and walk up to a 24" 146 buck. Just say maybe it could ,but realize that it will probably not. No matter what I would guess that alot of the hunters that have the tag will harvest the biggest buck they have ever shoot on this hunt.
-
Totally agree with ya, I know if I drew that tag I would harvest the biggest buck of my life time(wich would not be hard to beat 150") with a late tag, it would be a fun hunt.

The Entiat is a big place.
-
Nce pics. love that country
-
It is big country, I think I see 7 or 8 180" deer in those photos if I zoom in. Kidding aside it amazes me when in that big country and you see a deer on one of those far draws how nobody will hike over there to try to get one. Everyone says that is to far to go, I just bail over the edge of the hill and take off, couple hours later I am in the hunt. What else are you going to do, drive around in your truck and wait for one to stand on the side of the road while you shoot it? You gotta want it! Pain is temporary and a big buck on the wall is forever.
-
Too many road hunters in Wa thats why
-
The last couple of days i will be in the entiat looking for that POPE and Young Doe if i dont get a buck in my other unit? I dont thing i will have to get down into my honey hole to find a doe. good luck buck hunters
-
Now a pope and young doe from your truck is super doable. I am sure you will shoot it on a flat area and don't let it run downhill. Good luck on that. My wife has had doe tags in Swakane and we have always had good luck with them not tasting like a sage brush. I have only shot one buck that tasted like sage the rest were good eating but those sage tasting deer are tough to swallow unless you jerky, sausage and peperoni the whole thing.
-
entiat is a big place that is easier to see deer from the road than any unit i have ever been in.I am a ferm baliever in get away from the vehicle but the entiat is not that way its a a get 100 to200 yards away if need be to an edge and glass unit.I do not have neer as much time in there as many but that is my assesment.Just like the chawawa next to it
