Yeah, almost had him too. Then after season i went to look for his sheds on the 28th, which turned out to be a bit too early. Was leaning against a tree looking through tcam pics on my viewer. Heard a noise, looked up, and he was 40 yards away from me with his rack still on. I hunkered down hoping hed pass me by but he turned straight toward me and stopped when he saw me at 15 yards. Did the head bobbing thing at me for a while, then came in for a closer look. Stopped at 4-5 yards and more head bobbing. Then he walked off to my right a bit and more head bobbing. He couldnt get my wind and i wasnt moving a muscle. Eventually he kind of half assed bounded back the way he came from. He wasnt very spooked, never could decide what that weird lump at the base of the tree was i guess. Lucky he didnt hightail it for the next county. Went back on the 1st and found the set laying 90 yards from where that happened. On another note, i have no idea why im awake right now. Woke up at 1230 for no reason. My alarm is going off at 6am to go call cougars. Should probably put my phone down i guess.
-
Nice!
-
 that will make it all the better next year when you get him!!
-
You pretty much got what you wanted minus all the post kill work.😉
Hell of a buck, hope you get him next season.👍
-
Big deal Bango  , look what I got this morning... :chuckle: . Seen him on my camera last night, then he disappeared for a couple hours then came back packing on one antler... so I knew it had to be somewhere out there. Sure enough it was about 30 feet from my camera. I'm on the board at least.
-
Wait I am confused - are these dropping from deer this season? I didn't think deer sheds dropped so early. Is that true of all subspecies? White/mule/black?
If so, I have a backyard buck that I really need to start keeping an eye on.

Whitetails drop early, especially more mature bucks. See a lot around here drop christmas or earlier. Muleys here tend to drop later. No idea about blacktail

Yeah, the whitetail shed early. I had a little spike missing an antler on December 20th... don't think I'm going to find that one.

Just turn the gain down on your antler detector.👍

Yeah, I have glassed almost all packing their baggage still, but there's plenty to possibly find haha. I need an excuse to hike. Shed hunting season is my time to drop all of the fall weight I gained
-
Went for a short hike today with a friend and the lady, little 5 hr hike paid off. No fresh ones but some sweet old ones. The one 4 is gnarly.. can't wait for the bucks to drop. Great eyes on that smaller one!
-
Wow that's impressive great job DrStrangelove!
-
Motivation Monday!
Not sure what the heck he is doing but it's starting...
-
Trying to balance himself after losing an antler? :dunno: :chuckle:

Probably knocking that pesky single off, not unusual to find a pair

Broke the ice today with a match set.

I found my first elk shed last year and tried for weeks to match it up, no luck, hopefully this year!

The dog found both of these last week during work north of Spokane. He was confused when I had to leave the deadhead.

Thanks Tbob, but being good doesn't describe me! I was indeed hiking with an intent to pick up sheds but when you find it next to the tree your planning on leaning against because your lungs are on fire and your legs are about to fold, just dumb luck. Good luck this year, I'm sure you'll scoop a few!
-
Short little 3 hour hike paid off. Can you find the match in the first pic? Got it...that was a hard one to spot!
-
New to shed hunting, and my first official trip of 2019 was a success. I went out for a couple hours Monday morning and came out with 4 blacktail sheds, including my first matching set.
-
Banner day there PNW!
-
Damn, nice job dude!
-
Heck of a day!
-
How far apart were the two halves of that set PNW? I've had a lot of success pairing up whitetail sheds in Idaho, but I can't recall ever matching up a BT set. Likely just miss them in the brush, but feel like I cover the area within 100' or so in every direction pretty well, and defined trails further than that.

@Alan K I forgot to mark where the 2nd side was on onX but I think its right around 250ft from the first one. I actually had gave up looking for it kindve early, walked down to where I was hanging a camera and then ended up finding it taking a different route back up the hill. I won't deny that I was lucky, but I also found the other unmatched sheds within 100ft of the first one and all under two hours. Here is a very similar shed I picked up across the canyon about 400 yards as the crow flies in September.
And thank you @Tbob and @Watimberghost !
-
Here's where I matched them up
-
Awesome!
-
Good job, doing better than most of us. My first trip we left with the intentions of shed hunting, girlfriend and I found a nice elk shed, biggest so far I've found. Found another trip after then nothing for a LONG time lol
I've only matched one set so far and still hope for a day of finding more than one in one day...
-
Looks like you still have some deer down there in SW Wa for now.
-
I finally found a shed while shed hunting! :) nice blacktail 3 point with a tiny eyeguard

Nicely done!

Top set is 2019. I figure he is 6 1/2 years old now. Not bad for a blackie.
-
Awesome history with that buck rackattack! Dandy blacktail!
-
Damn, rackattack, that’s impressive.
Time to get him!

There can't be too many things as tough to find in the shed hunting world as that many year sets from the same BT. That's really cool.
-
Got out into a new area for a couple hours today. Its heavily hunted; seeing how old this is I'd put my money on he's been killed.
-
Thats a stud
-
First spike and a chewed fork; no brown '19 sheds yet.
-
Are BT sheds dropping yet?
-
Starting too.
-
No fresh ones today. Just a right side old 3 pt

Quit cheating and take the tracking colar off that deer. Lol
Thats awesome to find back to back to back years of the same buck and watch its growth.
-
That's a nice big brown!
Yeah, that guy is a nice one. Looked around for the other side for a bit, but no luck.

A couple more to add to the pile. Still no freshies, did see 2 bucks only carrying 1 antler.
Has anyone heard of any whitetails near the klickitat area?? The left most horn has a lot of whitetail characteristics, doesn't resemble a bench leg at all. The curl on the main beam is unreal, can someone analyze it for me? Just seems weird. Last pic shows the curl (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190129/67d5510f1a3ce36c6a73856284166812.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190129/0a05df0ded32191acfa6fd3f05e3de27.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190129/cd33ffdc20fd5dd0525672663527b5c4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190129/c8d6ec202b1328fc036221f1d7d95808.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190129/768da7e6becb416cb16c069a1445de22.jpg)

Weird, that little kicker off the base is what made me think it was an whitey. :chuckle:

There's Whitetail in the Yakima/Ellensburg area. I've seen them in the Canyon a few times, usually around Weimer, but have seen them up near the train trestle at Canyon Ranch rd as well.
I spent a lot of time on the Klickitat and hunting those hills and haven't seen anything that resembles a whitetail. There are Columbia whitetail down the Columbia not to far, but I'd have a hard time believing they've made it up the Klickitat, that is just not their type of habitat.
The "blacktail" in the Klick definitely have unique antler characteristics, with a lot of curvature as they get more mature. Many of them tend to be wide and not very tall, which can lead to a "whitetailish" look especially in 3 pts.
-
I haven't seen any in the Klick. Im assuming just a unique bench

Beautiful day in the woods today. Buddy picked up the first freshies of 2019.
The match set is a buck in regression, the older horn is a previous horn off the same buck. Found them 40 yards apart. Found this BT deadhead couple days back. Wish id seen him a few years ago with a tag in my pocket. 3x3 and eye guards, based were little smaller than hands. Biggest deadhead BT I've ever found. Good looking finds so far folks!

I agree. Would be cool garage art. To bad we can't keep them

Went out yesterday my buddy picked up 3! Saw 4 bucks still packing including a great 4 point with eye guards. That 4 point was pushing a doe really hard wouldn’t leave her side. We were wondering if she didn’t get bread and was in heat?
-
Saw a ok buck packing on the 16th still
-
A few more ..added to my first
-
On the board for 2019, but unable to post pictures. It says failed security check?

Had a doe and fawn in the yard this morning, the fawn was very small. Looked like it weighed around 40 lbs or less. She was bred pretty late.
-
Found one of last years, still nice and brown.
-
Damn Yager you must be able to smell them. Good find.

:yeah:
Good bull!

Found the first two BTs the other day and the third one was found today.

@Old Man Yager same bull ya think as that 6 you found?
-
Could be.....
-
Mine is for sale...... :chuckle:
-
@Old Man Yager hahaha if the price was right and they were for sure a match, I'd definitely consider it :chuckle: what're your 2 cents, think they are or not? The one thing that throws me off is the spacing between the second brow tine and g3 on them, thats the main difference I can see
-
I took a better picture of it, hard to tell without setting them side by side.
-
Yea it is hard to say, I'd be willing to meet up some time and check it out to see if you are in the area anytime soon, I'm in eatonville the rest of this week and then will be back in mid may for a few months!
-
To me they definitely look like a match, but you'd have to put them together to tell for sure! Great sheds by the way.

My guess is you are doing it from your phone. If so take a screenshot of the photo from your phone and then upload that screenshot. That is the easy way to do it. Otherwise you have to open it and resize the photo, save in the resized format and then load.
I like the screen shot method because then none of the GPS data from your location is attached to the pic. It's not an issue if you have your location turned off on your phone when you take the photo but if not everyone knows exactly where you were when you took the photo. It can ruin a good spot fast.
-
I think he is doing it from his computer but I could be wrong.

Nice work Buddy!!

I moved out here from eastern Iowa. Brought a couple 180+” mounts with me for the wall.
Shedding antlers of white tails would always depend on the severity of the winter. If it was mild, they wouldn’t shed until mid Feb sometimes March.
Bad and early winter they drop December/January.
One year, we had snow in the beginning of November and temps dropped into the single digits for shotgun season. I was with a group of 12 guys standing at the truck getting ready to head to the next area to hunt. (We hunted 50k acres of private Lands, The Amana Colonies) A very nice buck came out of the timber at 170 yards which was perfect for me and my S&W 460 XVR. All the other guys were using 12ga.
I put the crosshairs right behind the shoulder and as soon as I shot, both of his antlers fell off due to the bullet impact. So I got to tag it with a dep tag (doe) and shoot another monster three days later!

Fun weekend in the mountains

That’s a stud ram.

Wow! What a stud bull
-
Didn't someone recently post up a giant set of elk sheds? I just went to show my son and the pics are gone. Or maybe I saw them on FB or Instagram?
-
It was here and now they're gone...
-
Bigfoot must have been offended
-
Hmm, this could get interesting.
-
:yeah:
I believe they were on instagram also
-
Does anyone have pictures of the set or were they wiped from the face of the earth? East or West side bull?
-
I have a picture but I’m not posting it.
-
Probably a good idea not to! :yeah:
-
Been out the last couple days hiking around scouting, making plans for deer season, came up with one bleached out shed.
-
Nice!
-
.
-
Nice paddle!!! I really want to find a good moose paddle to carve a scene into
-
Probably a good idea not to! :yeah:
So did the kid with the big elk sheds hike in a closed area ?
-
That's the story I'm going with :chuckle:
-
kinda figured that
-
That was a nice set of sheds that magically disappeared...someone should re post them..I mean once you post a pic on the WWW you kind of loose any reasonable expectation of privacy regarding said pic.
-
Probably a good idea not to! :yeah:
So did the kid with the big elk sheds hike in a closed area ?
I didn't see anything attached to the photo data that would suggest that. So I am not going to speculate why the photos were deleted.
-
A few from over the weekend. Still a ton of snow out there!

Very nice!
Gotta love the brown gold!

One of them is, the fresh single 5x (not the dink one.) And the matched set is the 2017 rack of a buck a friend got on cam this year a couple miles away. Going back tomorrow, maybe ill find the 2018 rack from that bad boy, or match up that good right side i found. Heres a pic of the buck whos shed is the bottom left of pic.
-
That's really cool!
-
Found these this morning.

Thank you for reposting  Those are awesome! No harm in posting pretty non descript background. That's what keeps the forum fun sharing pictures of stuff.

Eh, mediocre at best. I saw that set a couple weeks ago when I was hiking. But I figured there was no point in packing out a set of rag horn sheds. Just kidding, that is a monster set, great job man!

The year old set of sheds i found the other day, theyre somewhat bleached out, but not bad. Trying to decide, to stain or not to stain?

My taxi mounted them. Had him do both of these sets of whitetail sheds that i found this year, and this set of moose paddles a couple years ago. The paddles arent very big, but they were in perfect condition, and i wanted a nice set of paddles mounted like this.
-
I still want to get an elk and muley set of sheds plaqued up,but havent found the right ones yet. Need to be both good sized and not chewed up. I looked all over trying to match this sucker up for that purpose but just couldnt find the other side.
-
Very nice
I want to do these, too nice for my pile
-
Do it, then post them up. If you just pile them on with a bunch of others, theyll just blend into a jumble of bone.
-
thanks for the motivation , looking into it
-
Yep, I would do it too!
-
Van Dyke's Taxidermy sells a good product, the elk shed connector. They have some good antler kits that look good too.
-

Don't stain. Not sure if you've tried staining antlers before but it drives me nuts when people do. Unless you're just needing to blend in a tiny area (like a spot on the bases from doing a euro mount or something) it always looks obviously stained and crappy...IMO. I'm extremely picky about antlers though. I can spot stained antlers 100% of the time and that's not what you want. I mount a lot of game every year and there isn't a single thing wrong with those!

Is that a short drive? :chuckle:

Found a raghorn shed in my backyard

Right on!! Awesome shed hunting season for you so far
-
First deadhead I found 4x3 also little forky I found earlier in the year :)
-
Came back to the rig w/ a shed the last 3 trips in a row...
A chewed on 5, 3 pt muley and my biggest elk shed so far.
-
Killer. Hey addict, did that 7x set break 400”? I’m sure it must have
-
Seeing all those sheds makes me want to head out now to shed hunt. I say that every year, but something always gets in the way, work and chores! I’ll keep living vicariously through you all! Nice sheds!
-
Good day last Saturday. Spotted another matching 6 that I couldn’t get to in time.
My favorite of the day was actually the trail shed- I had been following a single set of tracks several miles from the road on the trail leading to a hidden basin. The trail swung around the north side of a ridge and for a mile or more it was knee to thigh deep wet snow. After an hour of grueling pole-stepping the person who had been there ahead of me turned around and I contemplated the same. I decided to keep pushing on and 300 yards further I came around a corner where there was no snow to find that shed laying in the middle of the trail and the rest followed within a couple hours. It was a long night getting out of there with that load.
-
Perseverance pays off! Nice finds!!
-
I finally found some elk antlers. Unfortunately I couldn't take them with me

Had to actually leave the property to find this chewed old mulie. For the guy on Henry creek stuck in the rotten snow and your on here, we didn't get your name. Hope we run into you again on better circumstances :hello:

Picked up a few sheds in Southern Idaho while looking for a 205” ish buck I had a run in with last fall. Felt good to be up in mule deer country. 8,000 foot winter range.

You’re right, he was probably closer to 215”. He’d dwarf anything I’ve killed. I’d sure like to have him in my hands.

Those are always the sheds I find. Out hunting not looking for sheds and I find sheds. Always nice little sweetner👍🏻
-
Found 4 yesterday, 2 fresh, and 2 older sheds. Plus a bonus BT shed. Funny, I found the biggest one in the picture on a little rocky creek bed, took some pics, set it down to put my phone in my pocket, and when I went to pick it up, saw the BT shed laying under it tucked up under a rock.
-
Heres a little one :chuckle:
-
Anyone go up joe watt?
-
Wife’s 6 point on the left and I scoop up the 5 point on the right. So much for weak thirds! Picked up a spike on the way back as well.

Nice haul.

Nice work, Blackvelt!
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! It felt good to finally hit the woods and get the " shed skip" :chuckle: when you finally see that first good one.
-
Three or four of those sheds were 'missed' last year. Still look in decent shape, just some moss on them.
-
For sure. It's an area I hadn't been in for a couple years. It would appear no one else had either. Only one of the really old ones was actually "hiding".

Here’s this years haul

Found a dink moose shed yesterday while out hiking

Pretty darn cool! Would love to stumble on some moose horn!

A set I picked up this winter. Had to use snowmachines to get back to where the bull was hanging. Watched him for a few weeks in the snow and then headed in once he disappeared. He dropped both about 35 yards apart one canyon from where he had been living. Under estimated his size significantly, I thought about 310"-315" on the hoof. Didn't realize he sported 63" of mass!
-
Holy mass Batman! That is a sick sick set ya gots there!! WA bull??

Daaaaaaamn. Y'all doing work. Gotta be honest.....never found once. Ever. Lmao. What elevation are you guys finding them at?

More, my cousin moved out of the area :peep:

Yup, I mostly quit going after several years of constant decline. I'm pretty sure my spots got taken over, maybe by posting photos before I knew about not having my privacy mode on. It's gotten too popular for sure.

I've found more this year than the last couple years, and I've still got a few places to check out, and a few I'll probably go back to, damn grass shot up quick this year.

Its possible. Either way, if its moose or mule, its one odd duck.

Id have put my money on moose as well with that base and configuration but thats just from a pic. It does look like muley country. Cool horn regardless

The base had me thinking moose at first too. Im not too worried about which it is though. It is miley country, but its more moose country than mulie. Figure ive found maybe a half dozen muley sheds on that mountain, and probably triple that number of moose paddles.
-
Looks similar to one side of the bull I shot. I’ll post a pic later

Wow man! That thing is crazy cool looking !

Found this last week off an old road that I have probably walked a good 10 times this year. Funny what you find once the foliage starts to go down.
