Title: Riffe Lake Coho.
Post by: Smossy on June 04, 2019, 04:25:48 AM
This was over the weekend but spent the day with my moms out fishing for landlocked coho at riffe. Water level seems to be up a bit. Managed to have my 5 within 40 mins then moms 5 came not too long after all off chrome and gold kastmasters.
Was a good day specially from the bank. Outfished most the guys on boats  :dunno:

Also gonna throw in a photo of my PBLM from the weekend also 4.2lbs

Thanks fellas, went out to chase "kokanee" and come to find out riffe dont even have kokanee. So talked to wdfw out there being as there was actually one at the park, All the "kokanee" are actually landlocked coho.  :dunno: News to me.
Even if so, it was a blast and got lots of good fillets.

Your right. A lot of people call them Kokanee but they are coho. Those are all fish that come through Cowlitz falls dam after the adults spawn in the upper Cowlitz! You did good up there. The bass fishing can be lights out too!

I tried a few spots for smallmouth but couldnt get any hookups. The bass are just barely post spawn so some are being picky. Got to sit over some beds and watch the pairs guard it was cool. Couldnt get anythink to bite so me ans my buddy kinda were skimmin the shallows 2-6ft and easily 6lb+ monster females just hangin out. I got one photo from my gopro i shoved under the dock but its poor.

My birdseye view showed a half dozen boats in front of the dam and another half dozen up in front of the island. Wasn't there long enough to see how the fishing was but the weather and water were fantastic!

Love those Riffe coho's, they smoke up really nice. If you are looking for smallies head right out from the Mossy Rock boat launch around the island then into the bay. Lots of smallies in the bay.
There are also chinook in Riffe as well. We saw a kid catch a 26 pounder from the rocks by the dam about 10 years ago.

There wasn't a bulldozer in 2001, but the lawn borders Cowlitz Wildlife Area and it does have a great view of Swofford

Not that long ago, maybe 4 years ago? Almost makes you think people snatch stuff out of the river then pose on the lake for photos   :llam:

We saw the kid who caught the 26 lb'r. We were trolling by the dam and stopped to watched him play it for about 15 minutes before he landed it. I don't know how long he had it on before we noticed it. I was surprised how bright it was when he held it up.
We saw them later at the cleaning station.

Way to go
I have been wanting to go, with how low the water is and knee still healing, I don't know if I could make the walk up and down the launch, it's a long way....... and my new knee is still in healing mode...... BUT, I do think I may be making a trip over to Riffe  with Ribka next week  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

Ive been hearing about the walk up and down the ramp being an inhibiting factor in use from several people. I pretty much saw that coming when the work was going on. I think I will talk to management and upper management and see if they are aware of the issue and if there is any way to alleviate the problem. I really think the ramps would get more use if they were more user friendly. Just not sure how receptive they would be to look for a solution.

Yeah for those of us that are unable to make that hike up the ramp, or have a disability,  it really makes it tough, we can't fish the lake I  our boats without someone with us to assist.

But honestly, that really is no concern for the powers to be.......

Being ADA friendly is not on their mind  :bash:  :bash: :bash:

I honestly think they are somewhat sympathetic to the disabled. That is why the put in the ADA parking, swim beach and  swim beach access ADA accessible. Hopefully something can be done about the launch. I'm sure it would be very expensive though.
