I drew the NE raffle permits and was wondering what the best bet for elk would be. Units 101-124. Sept 1- Dec 31. What would you do?
-
Id have chosen extra bear instead of elk, so i could be the only guy in the state hunting spring bear in 113 next year, and focus on a killer whitetail and moose for the fall. But thats just me.
-
I have only a hearty GOOD LUCK on your quest. I know family members that don't share that info with each other. :twocents:

What a draw, congrats! I hope you have a lot of time off!! You may get a pm but those ne guys/gals don’t talk about their elk. I’d just get over there and scout, I’ve been scouting for my moose tag in 113 and I already know where I’ll be bow hunting for elk. In sept you’ll be able to listen for them, best of luck with all your tags!!
-
I have about 5 weeks. Good luck with your moose.

I think raffle tags end before bears would be out.

I’d rather take my chances on an elk. I got a bear last week. The raffle tag would have covered bear in the spring if I would have chose it.

If he selected bear, he could have used it next spring season too. Only one way to hunt spring bear in 113. Win the ne big game pkg and select bear as one of your 3.
-
Wishing you good luck. I have no idea where elk would be over there but I am hoping you find one and have a great hunt.
-
Depends on what you want to shoot......be assured, elk hunting is difficult at best here and if you want a great bull, you will have to spend a great deal of time finding him. Sure it can be done, just dont bank on luck.
Harvest results for elk and go with the unit with highest success for all weapons, then hunt before, through out and after the rut.
-
With my moose tag, I’ll be happy shooting a cow elk w my bow! Saw one last trip over! :cue:
-
no info but congrats
-
killer tag ! s, id be there from sept 20th through oct 20th both ruts should be a blast.
-
I'd bump that to the 12th. ;) I have found that to be the day to be in the woods up there. All I am going to give ya. Enjoy some fantastic hunting.
-
Let’s split the difference and say the 15th. But I’ve ran into some dandies on the 1st. Also would like to see a big moose killed in full velvet.

A lot of variables for the date you NEED to be there. I’ve had them hot and bothered in one area, and 20 miles away they aren’t interested or talking at all yet. Get on google earth, look for areas where there may be wallows and scout them.
-
I'm not familiar with the NE at all besides some spring bear trips but I'd think glassing cuts and feed sources late in the year could be a worth while tactic as well :twocents:
-
Dave and I will be heading over to my place over there in Nov for the Whitetail hunt. If you dont have your elk down by then you can hunt my property. We usually have a few elk on it year round.
-
I'd get your moose and whitetail out of the way and then look for a bull elk after the snow fall hits good and gets them moving lower. Toward the end of your season. Maybe that's just me. Good luck!
-
I agree with Maverick. The big tag on this one is definitely the moose tag I would put most of my effort into that for sure. And secondary probably the Whitetail tag since you Have a great chance at finding a dandy Whitetail. Then maybe try and track the elk down but honestly if you don’t have private property to hunt on it is probably going to be just chance that you run into them. I would say if you fill that moose tag and are able to get a second deer in Washington with that Whitetail tag I would consider it a success elk or not.

This. If i had that package id be worrying about getting a nice moose and 2 big whitetail bucks. If i had any time left over, then id worry about trying to knock down an elk, but if the elk part went unfilled i wouldnt be disappointed. Also, moose can shed as early as november, and big mature whitetail bucks can shed mid december, well before christmas. Elk will hold on to their headgear well past the dec 31st deadline. Something to think about when deciding your priorities.

I got my elk. Thanks for the help. Now on to moose. Should be fun.

Congrats man. Get after and hopefully when you are done you can post up some details and pics of the hunts. Don't get to specific about locations of course but a little about the hunts would be awesome. Wishing you luck on filling the rest of the tags.

Congrats! Hard part is over. You turning all attention to moose now?
-
Congrats!!! Hope to see some pics!

Elk was nothing exciting. Just a 2 point. I was just happy to finally find one. Like everyone said it was tough. Was just looking for a bull and finally found one. Now will be putting all effort towards moose. Not worried about the whitetail until thanksgiving. Appreciate the help. If anyone hears of a big boy hit me with a message. Thanks!
-
Don’t get me wrong. I’m very happy to get an elk. To be honest I really didn’t think I would fill that tag. Got lucky and am very thankful.
-
Get ahold of Jim Vandyke. He lives in Metaline and is/was a logger and has lived there all his life. He knows exactly where they are......

The guy that won it in 2018 did the same thing, then never got back on again to say how he did.
-
He filled all 3 tags. Small bull elk, big moose and a nice whitetail.
-
Just saw the moose, its a real nice one. Wheres the whitetail?
-
@Panther2207 ?

Having hard time posting pics.
-
More than happy to post pics if someone could help me out. Send me message.

If the pic is on your phone, take a screenshot of it and post the screenshot. Hold the power and volume down button. That works for me on pics that are too big
-
I sent you a pm with my #. Send me pics and I’ll post them if you want.

That was me editing. That @ thing still isn't working for members just mods I think.
I fumbled through the saving the image, editing it and then adding it back into his post.
Look at me getting all techno savvy. :IBCOOL:

Well done Panther!
-
Pics are awesome, thanks for coming back on and posting those.
I and I am sure others would love to hear a little bit about the hunts. What did you take each animal with? We friends or family along for the hunts? Any highs or lows you want to share? How long did you hunt? Weekend warrior or were you able to take a bunch of time off work?
Are you going to be in the raffle game again?
-
Thank you for sharing the photos!
