This guy! I will be in western Montana with my son giving them the business. Early November and the rattling antlers are twitching. Anybody else with plans?
-
Heck yeah!!!! In two states!!
-
Going to try the Northeast corner November 13-16. Hoping to have some success following my viewing of the 3nails tutorial.
-
:hello:
Last year was my first succesful rattle, looking forward to trying again :IBCOOL:
-
Heck yeah!!!! In two states!!
Awesome! Next year I'm hoping to do ID and MT.
-
Already have done some rattling with limited success. Going to hit it hard in the next couple of weeks here in Idaho. Those of you who know me, stop me if you see me over here. I'll do the same if I see any hunt wa stickers.
-
For sure over in Idaho and I am taking a new hunter out a time or two here in WA, so I will be trying to rattle and grunt in a buck for him. I have from the 8th to the 24th off. Hopefully this year I can stay healthy the whole two weeks!
-
Its been years since I tried it but with 2 buck and 2nd deer tags still to go, I'll give it a whirl this year.
Got some permissions as well as an IEP permit so there's places to go but lots of driving to get there.
We have been disappointed with so much land-locked IEP and DNR land in GMU 124, but there is still a lot available.
Blanchard Hump area has a lot of IEP land but my question is, is it too high up for deer this late?
Are there better access spots to take a mobility-impaired hunter for a doe hunt?
-
What & where is the rattling tutorial that was mentioned by 10thmtnarcher?
-
Blanchard hump has deer year round, its a good spot to take in as long as the gates are open. Been a little while since I was up there
-
I’ll be shaking some antlers this weekend for the Palouse tag! Can’t wait.
-
HEADED OUT NOV 8TH GOING TO HUNT THE WHOLE SEASON. HOPEFULLY THEY ARE CHASING SOME TAIL!
-
Went over to Idaho side last night and rattled/grunted. Heard distant movement, and had one come in behind me, but woods were pretty quiet. Hope it picks up next week.
-
I’m headed to the great white north(Canada) in 13 days then gonna try to swing through mt on the way home and hit that tag as well. Good luck guys!

Same 3nails who posted earlier in this thread. A wealth of knowledge, check his posts from previous years.

Friday im leaving for Idaho, hoping to rattle some in
-
Ill definitely be out there. This weekend in WA and then the following if I dont tag out then the weekend after that in Idaho for 5 days regardless. Everyone should watch the 3nails video, I haven't found anything more relevant and effective for PNW whitetail then his video. I rattled in a buck on the first weekend after watching it a few years ago then rattled a nice buck in and killed it the year after that. I'll be rewatching it again this week for a refresher.
-
I am taking my boys over this weekend to north central Idaho. Is it too early to rattle. We usually head over on Thanksgiving weekend and they seem to respond well.
-
I have noticed that the bucks seem to respond better during Thanksgiving week!

I'd like to believe you are going to be hitting it just right. Be convinced it will work and keep at it. 30 min minimum after rattling before even thinking of scratching that itch on your left shoulder! Should be prime right up until breeding, slow down a bit, and pick back up with a vengeance!
-
I will be in 117
-
My 13yo son got it done within the first 30 minutes on our first sit. Nov 8th, rattled a couple times and he came running in. My son made the 80yrd shot and his hunt was over.
-
I'll be at it here in north Idaho for the next few weeks. I've been re watching 3nails seminar video multiple times to cram as much info into my thick head.

Awesome! Got any pics?

Slow on the north Idaho side..
-
Rattled in a 4x5 today while working. Bucks seem to be cruising where I've been working at and hope to see the same south of me tomorrow

Nice congrats to him, once you have had them coming running in it’s hard to hunt any other way.

I appreciate the success story. I figured there was no chance since I haven’t seen any rutting activity here in 121 but I’ll give it a try tomorrow morning!
-
New addition to my rattling possibles. For too long have I hiked to the top of a ridge to rattle only to near freeze to death from sweaty clothes, in 10 degree temps, 15 minutes into into a 30 minute wait. More than once have I cut short a session due to cold only to get busted by a buck I hadn't yet seen. No more! This battery powered heated vest is going to fix that. My only concern now will be staying awake! :chuckle:

My girls said "Thats cool!" What brand is it?

I did 4 sets and 6.5 miles yesterday with only a coyote responding. Could not find a single scrape or rub any where. Checked all the places I normally find scrapes and rub lines, bedding areas, feeding areas and nothing. Saw 3 doe’s all day. I think this area has just seen way too many people all year long( horse back riders by the dozens every weekend) I’ve never seen so little deer sign here before. Seen tons of turkey though. Going to check out a new area today.
-
Rattled two small bucks in at first light today. A 4x4 and little 3x3. Both pushing does. And got both in under 80 yards. Pretty fun.
-
Never done it. Gonna try it in 105 in a few days.
-
Had a great night. Rattled in my first buck. Could hear him coming for 150 yards or more.
Came in hard charging and left just as fast! Never got a shot or a good look at him. Just happened to hit my wind before I could see him. ....... I’m hooked!!

I love it when you can hear them coming from far off! But don't expect that. The next one may take 30 minutes to peak through a gap in the trees.
-
Rattled in two bucks this morning. Didn't have any sheds, so I tried clacking two hardwood dowels together. Varnished dowels were really loud, and the bucks responded. Used a grunt call. The big one was a nice 5x5, and came to 50 yards before he spotted me. I wasn't in a blind or camo, just out hiking. Wish I had a late tag!
-
Gonna give it a try in the morning. Super excited.
-
Rattled in a buck with my 3 year old sitting next to me. Shot him...what more could I ask for?
-
Nice, Mr. Mykiss!
I rattled in a large spike buck to 25 yards last night. Almost took him... But decided to err on the side of mercy for the young...
-
are you guys getting a lot of rattling responses. I got nothin this morning, but ill keep trying, I just feel so foolish making all that racket
-

You must not bow hunt elk... :chuckle:
It’s all good brother. Let your freak flag fly and put on a show...it’s only for a minute and who’s watching??

:chuckle: I may go 3 or 4 days in a row without a response. But then......
-
For me it helped having a partner. Guy I’m teaching to hunt is really good at rustling brush and snapping branches and stomping about. So I put it to good use and run the calls and antlers. I’ve done 4 stands solo this year and one stand with him which is the stand we called in the buck. Maybe bring a kid along or a just a kid at heart.

Here is a picture of my son's buck that we rattled in last friday

nice.
-
I have only attempted to rattle for blacktails with no luck. I will be trying for whitetails this late bow season in 178.
-
Great buck for the young man, guts! Tell him well done.
-
I had a very short hunt today that was fortunately blessed with success. I want to thank 3nails, as I always do, for his insight and experience, and his willingness to share his knowledge with other hunters. I want to do the same for others on down the line!
To make a long story short, I worked a few very densely forested draws with "quick sets"- not even sitting down, but standing behind a tree and rattling. Less than an hour after starting my hunt, a buck came to TEN yards, and stood there while I carefully let the rifle (Savage Model 16 .243, Federal PowerShok Copper bullets) drop down into an aiming position. He ran about 70 yards, and fell on a forest road that happened to lead to the main access road in a mere 80 yards.
Meat for winter, memories for a lifetime, and even some antlers for the wall. A successful hunt on a sunny, perfect North Idaho afternoon.
-
Big body, nice sheds, thanks
-
I put these elsewhere but....rattled in

Rattled this guy in twice...

-
Thanks Bone! Those are both studs, would love to have one of them walk under my stand. Are you seeing these deer near Selah? Wow nice whitetails, especially that bigger guy, he looks old.
-
Thank you. No, traveling NE. There are a couple whitetails near Selah but not enough to invest any time in. Just seeing one is kind of a rarity.
-
Bumping this, sorry, everyone... Any WT rattling news from anyone, ID, WA, MT?

Any more pics of that buck?
-
I got a couple. I'll add them to "his" thread when I get a chance. No the best pics.
-
Be nice to see some more......hes a real stud buck.
-
He was not super photogenic

He was not super photogenic
Next time take the air out of his lungs. They tend to be much more cooperative for photo opportunities that way.
-
Just super, no worries on the photogenic part

Im going to have to steal your thunder here bone. Ive got some big whitetail buck photography to share too ya know. Nevermind the crappy phone pic, or the glare from my living room window. This here is the dominant breeder buck on my property this year. (Yes, he is a buck. Squint your eyes and look close.) Of course his claim to the throne may have something to do with the fact that hes the only buck here this season, but thats besides the point. Hes the boss, and he has his whole herd of 4 does and 2 fawns all to himself. :bash:
Man its sad the rapid decline going on. I know the methow muley herd is the big topic, but man our whitetails all over are tanking rapidly too. Major changes need to be made.
-
:chuckle:
-
Bango, do you have trail cams out? No larger bucks moving around at night?
-
Not on my property. Deer are just flat out gone. Too many predators, and too many people looking to kill any yearling buck they see. Guarantee you if he would have been seen wandering into the state land across the street during gun season he would have been shot. These young bucks are just too dumb to not get killed, and theyre slaughtered wholesale. I know its an unpopular opinion around here, but we really need the 4pt minimum back. With the trouble our deer are in, an otc modern firearm "any buck" hunt during the rut is just insanity. With the apr gone for what, 5 years now? All of the ground we gained has been lost.
After 4 years of apr, the improvements it made were obvious. With it gone 5 seasons now, the backwards slide is just as obvious.
-
:yeah:
-
All Ne Wa needs to go to 4 point or better and no doe harvest for a few years. Sad state of affairs up there

The 4pt apr needs to be permanent, and no antlerless harvest needs to remain in effect until our numbers get back up where they should be, which wont happen unless we start getting our predators under control.
Id be okay with the early modern season being any buck for youth only, if a compromise must be made. Late season, 4pt min for everybody.
-
Agreed...
Heres another rattled in...

:yeah: it’s been a backwards slide ever since removing the 4 pt. apr,

Agree on all points.
Bone did you rattle in that buck yesterday? Heading out this weekend to try and rattle in a cruiser bruiser. Thanks! And Happy Thanksgiving!
-
No, just catching up on pics. Good luck on your hunt. Rut will be waning but rattling should still be effective.
