I checked out an old haunt yesterday as my vacation comes to an end. Almost vacant from deer. I went to an overlook of a big field below. I saw a buck chasing a doe. It was a smaller buck. I got out the Binos and there was a heavier smaller 4 point with a couple doe. I decided to get closer as he was worth a pic at least. I drove down the little access road and kicked up another little buck. I rounded the corner and I see two bucks head to head in the field. I bailed out of the truck, threw up the camera and snapped a couple shots to at least document the thing. Usually these things last just a second. I then put on my doubler to bring it in closer. What proceeded next was One hell of a buck fight. The heavier buck won TWICE, but the challenger immediately reingaged. Then the bigger boy lost his footing and the smaller buck got him down on his back. He still had him locked up, but the little guy got out and gored the hell out of him as he tried to get his feet under him. The big guy got up, and was chased. Both were just exhausted. The doe wanted the bigger buck still. She kept following him and the other buck kept following her. I’m betting after I left there was another round. The fight brought another buck in. A three point who could be seen in a bunch of my pics as if it was a fight on the playground. I thought he was then going to have a go at it, but he didn’t. What a fight!
Talk about a realistic rattling session. I swear half of my life is through a viewfinder. Here’s to hoping some photos turned out. It was so dark with the fog. Fingers crossed.
Oh its on!

If I hadnt been so intent on the fight, I should have refocused. That would have been an epic in the background shot. :chuckle:

I hope that gives you the best jist of the fight. It lasted a long time. I think I took over 350 photos of it. As I said the doe still wanted the older buck when it was all done. She was following him and the winner was wanting the prize. The big buck kept his distance but not in a very subordinate pose. I should have stayed and watched, Im sure there was more action. I was off to look for something bigger.
Very fun to watch. Incredible show of force and they are seriously in it to win it. Life hangs in the balance!

WOW
Could have been a broken neck there.
-
That was absolutely nuts! Incredible photos! :yike:

Now that is special, thanks

I though about it, but then I wouldn’t have the pics I got. I’m not a video guy either so I’d likely have botched the whole thing. It was more fun to watch through the viewfinder than some little screen too.

Amazing sequence of pictures!

AWESOME!!!!!

Thank you!

I saw something similar in my youth (mid 70's) where two very nice 3x3 black tails were pushing around in a gravel pit (it's a housing development now). While they were going at it a much bigger buck walked past them like they were furniture, sniffed the doe then turned around and just walked off. Why put up a fuss when she's not ready I guess.
Thanks for sharing you photos. Brought back some great memories.

:o you see more in one day than most of us see in 10 years of hunting.
-
awesome pictures. So don't know if its been asked but is the location a secret? 8)
-
I typically don’t announce where I am at, so yes.
-
Very Cool!!!!

Great pics.

Very special series of pictures! What a fight! Man, that broad side blow sure had to hurt something fierce! So glad I don't have to go through something like that when its mating season at my house!
-
Love the pictures and would have loved seeing that. I've seen a pretty good elk fight, but was from a distance through my spotting scope. But never have seen mule deer go at it like that.
-
Not gonna lie "bone", that is seriously probably the best sequence of Pic's I've ever seen on this site, as everyone has said, thanks for sharing, that is just some great brute force to look at, seeing it live must have been a hoot. Thanks again.
-
Absolutely amazing! That had to be something to see and hear live, thanks so much for doing what you do and for being willing to share it with us  Your photos make this forum worth returning to again and again!
Oh, and I enjoyed the play-by-play narration too :IBCOOL:
-
That is AWESOME bone! Is that sequence going to be the 2020 calendar?
-
HOLY SMOKES...that was violent! Thanks for sharing!!
-
Thank you all! I really appreciate the positive feedback. I’m glad I could share.

No calendar shots were taken. I try to get way closer and have much better quality on both the photo and bucks. I have one that I’m not particularly satisfied with the quality, but it’s the best I could get, and my chief editor says it’s a must include. It’s of that giant WA buck I posted earlier. It has a nice feel for it, just not what I wanted. I wanted to bump it for “Da one”.

Those are some really great shots.

The gloves were off! Thanks for posting
