Leaving in two weeks for my son in law and wife’s cow moose hunt, drove around the area today, neat looking unit. Have a camp spot in the southern portion of the unit, anyone have any honey holes for a couple cow moose?? :)
-
Thanks for the PM’s guys, appreciate it!!

Changed the title a bit, got good info on places to go, thanks again guys! Question, after trying to eat my 8 year old bull moose a couple years ago, and talking w a good friend about his big cow moose he killed. We were both not impressed w the meat, so my question, is there any ethical arguments about shooting a 1-2 year old cow? I want the wife to shoot a young moose so we have a better chance at good meat. Thoughts?

did you have any of it cubed? I have found on old mature bull elk it needs to be put through the cuber 2-3 times and you have some nice tender steaks!

I didn’t, but I should have. The burger was great though, I only add 5% fat so it’s brittle but taste good.

To answer your question….nothing wrong with shooting a young moose
With that said, I’ve shot two bull moose and both were tough. One was a young bull and the other was a big boy. They both taste delicious and preparation was the key to making them edible. Cubed is a great way to go. Canned is an even better way to go. We made a lot of jerky too which is amazing. Hamburger and stew meat is always a show stopper as well. Not a fan of huge roast unless you brine and smoke….to make lunch meat like pastrami.
Point being….Big moose taste great too. If I had that tag, the size wouldn’t matter near as much as it’s location in respect to the road. Above the road….it dies.

Well since I hunt huckleberry pretty much all the time.
I'm gonna assume that you will be out the first days of season.
If I see any in October ,I'll just PM ya or something.
I have a feeling you might not be to far away.
-
If I every get drawn for a cow moose, would definitely being targeting a yearling cow. As for the cuber, very worthwhile.
Made Moose Parmesan the other night and ran it through a small hand crank cuber and it was very tasty and pretty tender.

Well, getting to know a little about the area a bit. Son in law saw a small bull today, zilch for the wife and I. I’m really surprised how many muzzy elk hunters are here, haven’t seen any elk sign. I’d say we were seeing lots of deer but the locals would hate me for that, so, haven’t seen any!

Who said cow moose hunting was boring!!! Holy crap, sometimes there is a horny bull with the cow you shoot that isn’t very happy w you!! That was crazy! My son in law shot his first animal ever, a big cow moose this morning. We went up to get her and didn’t even notice in the thick stuff that a 4-5 year old bull was 10’ away from us and pissed! He chased us off the mountain in a frenzy! Holy crap that was fun! The bull never left her side, we were kinda stuck, even after shooting he wouldn’t budge. Luckily we found some guys who were helping a blind guy that had a bull tag! Perfect scenario! After about 2 hours, he made it to where we were, shot the bull at 25 yards and the work begun!!! So cool! One more cow to kill! Seen 5 moose today alone, 3 cows two bulls.

yup, after a few directions, he got it! Lol :chuckle: Companion hunter killed it for him.

It was reminding me of my dads 1st bull moose. His eyes were getting bad, legally blind now and had to quit hunting. I spot a good bull on the hill side and he says where is it? What!? It’s that giant black thing right there about 100 yards. I’m pointing but no luck so I line up behind him looking through the scope. There look, see it? Boom. Upside down bull.
-
Man, thats a great story!! Congrats all around! Hope you can fill the other tag!

Tagged out today!! The wife and I saw a bull at first light, then besides a wolf at 284 yards, it was quiet. Till we were heading back to camp around 10:30 and she spots a nice cow at the bottom of a clear cup. We get out, set up and cow down ! She was shaking from the coffee, and had to step away for a second to regroup. Stepped back up, and made the 130 yard shot! Sweet! Used my crab rope and snatch blocks to pull her up to the road, it was priceless! Thank you to all the guys who sent PM’s, really appreciate the help!

Congrats!!!

Way to get it done!!👍👍

Damn happy to see the son in law draw his first blood, but after a couple whiskeys around the fire and hearing that he felt bad about the kill, more proud. Every real hunter respects the life they take, and for a young guy to recognize that and admit it, makes me proud. Great times.
-
Congrats J & J! Glad you got it done in a place with an easier pack out. Which part of the unit do you see most of the moose?
-
Only hunted the southern part, off Springdale -hunters rd. Thank you!
-
Congrats to your family and for the meat at many future family meals!
-
Awesome job Jerry. Hopefully one year I'll get drawn. Way to make it happen - Congrats! Steve got drawn and is up hunting goats.

This was the bull that charged us.

Pm me, not sure who you are? Lol.

The best way to make any Venision edible is to Hang is in a locker/cooler for at least 7-8 days :yeah:
It seals the meat & ages it. Take your nose and small that beef!

Do you mind telling what cartridge you all were successful with?

Nice job to you and your wife Trophyhunt. Your son in law's remorse is very commendable. To this day I always feel a little remorse after a harvest. But its bitter sweet type remorse. Its a good thing I think.

I agree, I was very pleased to hear him admit that. The older I get, the more the killing part means to me. I love the hunt more than ever, when I was younger the killing part didn't even enter my mind. I've always said a prayer for the animal, but now it means more. I was proud of him for sure, and I let him know that that's what makes a good responsible hunter. Hunters care way more about these animals than any anti hunter.

Jerry, I'm Kellogg - lol. Me, Leroy can never get drawn for anything - lol. Steve gets drawn for everything. This year he is goat hunting. Again, Congrats man!

I thought so, figured you were talking about Pete. Are you getting a chance to go with him???? Maybe if you, Leroy and I put in as partners the system would crash!!lol. Someday I'll wise up and put in with the wife!! Good to hear from you, tell all the guys I said hello!
-
I offered Steve all my help, but he said his brother owed him since he helped him out on his goat hunt a few years back. Plus, he has nephews going up also. They are into billies, but just not the one yet. I'll keep ya posted and I'll tell everyone that you said hello. Good luck the rest of this season.
