Title: Help a kid fish
Post by: one shot kill on May 15, 2022, 04:37:42 PM
I know this is not a fishing forum but here we go. We are from tri-cities but unfortunately stuck in Seattle childrens hospital for a while. My son is 13 and fighting a battle against leukemia. He had his bone marrow transplant the other day and all he can think about or talk about is getting back to fishing. I told him I might be able to pull the boat over and find some Kokanee but I am not going to be around all the time as I am trying to balance life between here, work and home. I would like to ask you guys for a few ideas on good areas to catch fish. Maybe a couple lakes that would produce trout and Kokanee. He is also really interested in fishing jetties and such for rock fish. PMs would be great and if someone has 2 open seats on there boat I can cover the fuel and what not. We are not going to be out of the hospital till the middle of June, so just trying to do some research in advance. Thanks. Blake

Just to let you know, Tacoma Sportsman's Club is having their annual kids fishing derby this Saturday. It's held at Bradley Lake in Puyallup's South Hill. Snacks, lunch, bait and rods are provided. This event is no charge and open to anyone.

Give us a little time to come up with something and I bet we can make something happen.  Lots of possibilities.

Does he like to fly fish?

Fortson Mill Pond in Darrington is kids only would be a nice drive in june to get away from Seattle. Easy access and it is well planted with nice trout. Twin Lakes in Smokey point is just off I-5 and a lot closer to Seattle, but kinda hit and miss with any fish it gets hit hard, plus the homeless hang out there quite a bit. Both of those are bank fishing, but if you want to boat fish there are several lakes in Snohomish county that would be great, and I am sure there are enough guys on here that would help get a kid fishing!

We have plenty of time to get info. He has never fly fished before and the majority of our fishing is walleye, bass, salmon and Kokanee.

Have you thought about a charter out of Westport?
.
Bottom fishing from "The Slammer" would make his day!
.
(Or any other boat)

Post by: one shot kill on May 15, 2022, 07:51:52 PM
A charter might be a possibility but we have to be really careful how many people he is around because the transplant completely wipes out his immune system. As a matter of fact his immunization record is wiped clean and he has to do them all again. I think our transplant team would prolly say no unless I could charter a boat with like 4 people.

Weíve been known to do it up a little in situations like this. Just want to make sure what the boundaries are here before we get too carried away :chuckle:
The hunt wa crew will have him on a fully outfitted blue marlin trip if weíre not careful.

Hit me up if you're still around July 1st.  Would have plenty of room for a few bodies, crabbing and flat fishing (sole, sanddabs and maybe some other strange looking creatures).  Would be totally free, just show up in Everett with a cooler (or I could donate one).  I have extra crab and fishing gear and tons of bait in the freezer.

Boats are fine, just not big charter boats with 20 people. Have to be careful not to expose him to too much.

Just to be clear here. I am in no way asking for a hand out and certainly donít want it to come across that way. I just have no idea about fishing spots on this side of the state. I appreciate all the responses.

To late! We be handing!

18 foot ctr console, RHBoat. I'm local to lake Stevens and we can hit the lake or head out of everett for flounder. All gear available and gas money not needed. Likely also see a whale or two out there.

Thanks for the kind offer. We will be in the hospital for another month or 2 and have to remain close to Seattle until around the first of September. Heís been here since January 27th and he/we are going stir crazy. This gives him something to look forward to and we will definitely be in touch.

Hope to hear from you.  Will process the crab and clean any fish right at the dock.  If you need it vacuum sealed, frozen and stored, I will do that too.  All you'll need is the proper licenses, I can help you with that as well.

You guys are much too generous. I donít even know what to say or how to thank you all. As things progress and we have a better idea of timelines, I will let you all know. I know once we are out of the hospital he has to  be within 1 hour of Seattle until around mid July, by then his immune system will be kicking in a little and he will have a little more freedom.

If he is Jonesing for bass, we can hook him up there too.  I know several of us have full tournament set-ups.  I have everything needed up in Snohomish County but can travel too.  Several lakes to choose from.  Decent shots at good size smallies and largies.  You just show up and the rest is covered.

I would also throw in for the charter if that is the main plan.

Count me in if you need lodging for an overnight somewhere the night before or after a fishing trip. I'll cover 1 night.

Also, I live near Bremerton and would be glad to take him out this summer or fall for salmon. If he's not strong enough to get out this summer, let's plan a trip for next summer. We would be glad to host you for a couple days, put you guys up in an AirBnB, and cover your transportation costs and meals.

You and your wife (I'm assuming) are probably exhausted too and need a break. Let me know if you're able to get away for a night or two. I'd be glad to donate a couple nights at an airbnb to unwind and rest (even if it means later this fall when your little man is out of the hospital).

I am wondering if it would be better to start Ďsmallerí, depending on how he is doing? He may not have much stamina.
Maybe a pan fish outing to start with? Still working on getting my boat repaired or I would offer.
Lake Wa or Samamish would be a good fit distance and fishing quality.

This is kinda what I was thinking but I know hunt wa is go big or go home🤣🤣. The ocean should be fine more into late July or August but I just donít know how fast he is going to bounce back. We will have to play it by ear. He really wants to be able to have his mom take him to a pier or jetty while Iím not here during the week. Anyone have some spots they would be willing to share?
Thank you guys so much for the support. He is so looking forward to the opportunities to meet and fish with all of you. Itís pretty much all he talked about yesterday.

Magnuson Park is right next door to the hospital, and there is plenty of beach access just south of the launch ramp.  I suspect he could also fish off the end of the launch ramp dock, it's not crowded right now.  A worm under a bobber floated back towards the shore will catch perch and panfish. At the north end of the park is a dock and small pier at the sailing center (Sail Sand Point), which is inside the park.  It's all public, and I suspect other people will be fishing there too.  By mid-summer, these spots will get choked with milfoil, but it should be fine for the next six weeks or so.

I donít know how I can possibly thank everyone enough for the offers and opportunities even if they donít work out. This is helping to keep him positive when he is not feeling good. When he is doing good he is watching fishing videos on YouTube and he even got a Bassmaster fishing game for his Xbox to help occupy him. Thank you all.

Letís give this another go.
Just a quick update on Karson. So last Tuesday night I get a call at work that he was moved to ICU because of rapid liver failure and kidney failure called VOD, caused by the conditioning chemo and that me and my daughter need to come right away as things are not looking good. They sedated him, put him on the breathing machine, started dialysis and some meds to get this under control. Long story short, the doctors said his chances are slim but he is starting to make a comeback and the doctors are amazed. His liver is regenerating and his sisters cells are engrafted and doing their work. Things are slowly coming around and we are hopeful that he will fully recover. This is a very short update but figured I would share. Thank you guys for your generous offers. I believe they are helping to keep him fighting.

Sorry itís been so long but here is a little Karson update. We are still in ICU but the dialysis is the only thing holding him on here. He was able to eat his first chicken noodle soup last night and they are beginning weaning him of dialysis. He got a 10 out break from the machine and his kidneys handled it fine. His liver is kicking butt and they are no longer concerned with it as it is functioning normally. Things are looking good and on track to get out of ICU soon and hopefully out of the hospital around the same time. They did a bone marrow biopsy earlier this week and the graft was a success!! His cells are 100% his sisters. They told him if he robs a bank to be sure and leave some blood at the scene🤣. He is super strong kid and is now back to walking the halls and messing with the nurses. Thank you all for your prayers and we canít wait to be able to meet up with you guys.

Another quick update. Karson was kicked out of the ICU on Saturday.  :IBCOOL:. He no longer needs dialysis and I think they are pulling his feeding tube today because he is eating like a horse and it is no longer needed.  His kidney and bone marrow biopsy came back clean and they are planning on discharging him by the 9th and possibly as soon as this Thursday. He is super excited to get out and be able to have a bit of normalcy. Bring on the fishing! I will be in contact with you fellas who have offered to help and see if we can work around your schedule and his appointments. He has to be extra cautious so he will have to wear gloves and a mask to prevent exposure to bacteria in the water and fish, dirt etcÖ
We look forward to meeting everyone. I know things may not work out with him being in the hospital longer than expected and everyoneís busy schedule but we will give it a shot. Thanks
Blake

If you guys happen to be in SW WA between now and 9/10 or after 9/22 I'll be spending a lot of time (mostly weekends) on the Columbia out of Kalama or down at Astoria/buoy 10 chasing kings and silvers and have room for 2 on my 18' boat. I have all the gear, all you need is a lunch and a license. Not currently a guide but have 22 years guiding experience.
9/10-22 I'll be chasing elk. :archery_smiley:
