Knight Mountaineer - Western Edition...
« on: November 13, 2013, 04:35:40 PM »
I finally got some time to get out to the farm this morning to do some shooting-testing-sighting in of the new-to-me Knight Mountaineer that I recently acquired.

I installed the thumbhole stock on the rifle, had to do some sanding in the barrel channel to get it lay in there correctly, but got it done and headed to the farm.

For those that do not know - in Idaho we have to shoot full bore conicals during a ML season.  I normally shoot 460 grain Bull Shops, but I have 4 boxes of the .504-400 gr. LGP's and I was thinking it would be a very good bullet to try out.  You can see the bullet in this picture provided by Bull Shop..

There was only one real problem, when I got to the farm - Marty was farming - farming right in the middle of the range!  You can see in the picture he was uploading A. Ammonia to the equipment so I had to wait for him to clear the area...

After that I punched some holes in a 25 yard target.  At first I was using .128x.510 shot card.  Shot a nice group with them then decided to try some MMP 50 cal. sub-bases... they even gave me a tighter group.  I really think they are sealing the bore better than the shot cards.  I could not verify that as I did not take a chronograph with me... Hopefully next trip.

After the 25 yard shooting I got greedy and placed some clay pigeons out at 50-75 & 100 yards.  I shot the 50 birds first and got both of them and it seemed very easy - so I moved to th3 75 yard birds and then the 100 yard birds.  All went well I believe I am now ready for Idaho's ML deer season later this month... :IBCOOL:  :IBCOOL:

Here is a composite picture of some of today's activities...

Ok Sabot you get the earliest look at some of the Knight stuff.  So give us some insight

What is the difference between the knight mountaineer and the disc extreme with the western kit?  I am looking for the tangible differences as well as the opinion:

weight
twist
barrel length
trigger

pros
cons

Etc

What is the difference between the knight mountaineer and the disc extreme with the western kit?  I am looking for the tangible differences as well as the opinion:

The easiest way for me to possible explain the differences is that the Mountaineer is built to much tighter standards - less deviation in fit and bore diameter. But basically they really are close to being the same rifle. When you are considering just the Western Edition.  If you are looking a the 209 edition also the Bolt and breech plug are different than the Extreme, in that the face of the bolt has primer rails the prime fit into for insertion and extraction vs. the Extremes 'Primer Adapter'

Extreme.
◦Ignition: 209 Primer with Full Plastic JacketŪ or Western No.11 & Musket Cap Nipple
◦Caliber: .50 Cal, .52 Cal
◦Twist Rate: .50/1:28 in., .52/1:26 in.
◦Stock Finish: CarbonKnightŪ
◦Barrel Finish: Solid 416 Stainless Steel
◦Barrel Length: 26 in. Hand-crafted Barrel
◦Overall Length: 45 in.
◦Weight: 7 lb, 6 oz
◦Sights: Williams Fully Adjustable Metallic Fiber Optic Sight Set
◦Trigger: Fully Adjustable
◦Length of Pull: 14.25 in.

Mountaineer
◦Ignition: Full Plastic Jacket or 209 Bare Primer (excludes Remington primers)
◦Caliber: .45 Cal, .50 Cal, .52 Cal
◦Twist Rate: .45/1:30 in., .50/1:28 in., .52/1:26 in.
◦Stock Finish: Forest Green
◦Barrel Finish: Solid 416 Stainless Steel
◦Barrel Length: 27 in. Fluted Free Floating Barrel
◦Overall Length: 45.5 in.
◦Weight: 7 lb, 5.5 oz
◦Sights: Williams Fully Adjustable Metallic Fiber Optic Sight Set
◦Trigger: Fully Adjustable
◦Length of Pull: 14.25 in.

pros.... I would say the pros for the Mountaineer are that the rifle is built to tighter specs, more like the old days when Tony Knight was making the rifles...  Both the Mountaineer and the Extreme are/can be really accurate...

cons... Probably the biggest complaint is the Western Edition really gets the breech dirty.  Which is not a big thing to me but others it is.

Hope this answers some of your questions... Also remember the prices you see on the Knight web site can be beat all to heck by Bob in Longview... Still Expensive but much better pricing...

In all honesty either one of the two rifles would make an excellent PACNORWEST rifle... The rifle I really prefer is the new Ultra-Lite, shorter barrel, 2 lbs lighter, with a Kevlar stock that is good for either a right handed or left handed shooter...

Yeah, I was looking at the ultralite as well, but I kinda wonder how much velocity is lost with the shorter barrel vs the mountaineer or disc.

I wonder about that too.  I know Sabotloader has a chrono.  :chuckle:

My buddy got the Ultralight this season.  I had the opportunity to handle it and shoot it once.  It's a very handy rifle, I must say.  It reminded me of my ruger 10/22 the way it feels and points.  I love my Disk Extreme with thumbhole stock, but I know I'll have to get an ultralight too.

Here is an article that gives some information on that subject. I'm not sure that the amount of energy lost is significant enough to worry about in a typical hunting situation, but no doubt less ft/lbs produced with a shorter barrel - all other things being equal.

Ok I had to go find some notes... but my very first thought it is so insignificant would not even worry about it... Well I do not anyway...

T7-110 grains .458x275 gr. Bloodline - 1850 fps  24" Ultra-Lite
T7-120 grains .458x275 gr. Bloodline - 1950 fps  24" Ultra-Lite
T7-120 grains .458x275 gr. Bloodline - 1975 fps  26" Extreme

T7-120 grains .458x300 gr. Bloodline - 1900 fps 24" Ultra-Lite
T7-120 grains .458x300 gr. Bloodline - 1925 fps 26" Extreme

These are the average velocities I get @ 3000 ft. above sea level

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!
