308, 150gr deer and elk load?

well this may be beating a dead horse...but i need a load for both deer and elk. so basically i want a 150gr load that will work on elk out to 300yds. if i can get that covered i wont really need to worry about deer sized game.

it will be shot out of a 20" barrel if that matters

Barnes TSX or TTSX over 47.5 grains of Varget out of my Winchester Model 88 lever action. One shot kills on elk at 326 yards and deer at 253 yards. No evidence of problems, pressure  or anything else.

Nosler Accubond would be good (or Partition). Or another great choice, and probably what I would go with, is the Barnes TSX. Are you wanting loaded ammo, or will you be loading your own?

ill just be using factory loaded stuff right now. i have access to loading stuff, just need the dies. if i find a factory round i like i can always buy dies and start loading.

I have never been able to follow that line of thinking.  If you find a factory load you like, buy three boxes of it and you're good for life.  Why start over and pay more money for components?   Oh well - to each his own.  This is the first group I shot with Barnes factory 150 grain TSX ammunition out of an old Win Mod 70 30-06.  I'm done.

While guiding I always had a .308 ready for those who needed a gun (suprising how many did) It too had a 20" barrel and shot Remington 150 grain Core-Loks like a champ.  I think we only used it to harvest four elk, but none of those did I have to look for.  All went down within feet of being hit.  That little gun/ammo combination has taken over two dozen bear though - two over 500#.

I have now given all my big guns away.  Keeping the little .308 for myself.  I have switched to Hornady SST factory ammo as it feeds better.  The SST does ruin a bit more meat, but heck as long as I am behind the shoulder and not in the ass who cares.  Hornady seems a bit more messy in the barrel.  Takes a lot more to get it clean than the Remington.

20" barrel and .308 Winchester is going to give you nice speeds, but still very slow for some of these premium bullets.  I would avoid the hard bonded bullets and the A-Frame types in the .308.  Not enough good experience with the Barnes so I can not comment on that.

Bob33...you are right that line of thinking isnt very good if i was looking to find a load then not shoot the gun after i get it dialed in. 3 boxes of any given ammo would last a hunter a life time if they are a good shot 

if i find a factory load my gun likes and want to shoot it any amount of time, i will eventually have to start loading in order to keep costs down.

That model 88 is an awful gun.  You should sell it to me and get yourself a good one  

Need the 284 (not the carbine) to complete the collection.  But another 308 would be just fine with me too.

I hunted w/a win. mod. 100 308 semi-auto for years. I shot nothing but 180 gr rem. factory corelocks. Killed deer and bear, put one clean through a wt at 325 yds.

i started hunting with a mod 88 in 308 as well. nice gun, always seemed to kick hard thought :p. i would try nosler accubonds and varget powder. just a thought, if i remember right the 165 gr is ballistically Superior to the 150 in energy at every yardage and trajectory is basically the same. just a thought. if you have win 748 powder, look through some of the older reloading manuals for 748 loads it shot really well and is a dream to load with.

i noticed the barnes bullets left a ton of copper residue in my barrel i stopped using them, i switched to berger vld 168gr in my 30-06 i love them
