Why I love opening day of crab....and the ongoing season!

Yep. A nice calm morning. Soak the pots, drop a hook over the side for some flatfish, just goof off a bit. We may need to take a day off bear hunting in Aug to make it happen.

Apparently we're not the only guys looking for turkey legs this time of year... couldn't find them last night, so I went with chicken legs instead.  Crab don't seem to know the difference.  Had 6 keepers in the first pot this morning and had both limits plus covered on the second pot.

Nothing huge today, a few pushing 7" but nothing over.

Still doing well also. Same are I've been working. Easy limit yesterday early then picked up my son and brother in law. Put a couple more on the boat then noticed my boy getting a little tired and pale. Wind had kicked up and made for a little rougher weather. Baited the pots heavy and headed into visit the scuttlebutt for some fish and chips. Came back out and pulled the pots. Man does it get tough pulling pots in the wind with a load of crab. We limited out for us both in the first pot. After that is was discard a few of the smaller six and a halfs, double check the count, and head in.

I agree that chicken works just fine. However, I really like a big turkey leg for being able to hang it in the middle of the pot. What really set it on fire for me yesterday was flounder. I would run up into about 20 feet of water and drag a steelhead jig tipped with a bit of nightcrawler. Caught about 9 or 10 flatfish. Basically I sliced em and hung them in the pot Deadliest Catch style. The crab loved 'em. Ate them up and left only the head. So, if you can, catch a few and try it out.

The flounder off of our dock gave us our best haul too.  Mixed with other things that were already in the bait box.  Didn't have any keepers until the flounder went in though

okay......quick side discussion regarding pot pulling.

We been pulling a lot of pots. I'm getting sore doing it and when the wind and waves are up and the tide is running a very full pot is quite the mass to be moving through the water. Does any know of a somewhat inexpensive pot pulled that is manual, mounts to the rail, or to my Scotty downrigger mounts. Really....I think the easiest way to pull pots is bring a newbie and tell 'em that if they want to have a beer they have to pull pots. I can just sit back and watch the sort happen. Any suggestions?

Could you rig up a boat trailer wench? Use some lumbar making something you can stand on, with the wench mounted up and over the side of the boat kind of like a gallows? You stand on the bottom, and the upper 3/4s would be pulled against the side of the boat? IDK, just thinking out loud.

I will do it, just let me put out my pots.  I have pots and no boat at the moment.
