elk decoys

Just wondering how effective elk decoys are for the early archery season and any advice on how to deploy them?

we use them in a  multiple person scenario where one guy is behind calling next to the montana decoy while the other is in shooting place. just one thing that might pull a reluctant bull in a little closer!

I put weights in the legs, and a small bungie on the back, can open and hang on branch without having to figure the legs out...
I think movement helps also.

Decoys are very effective, especially when used as described by bloodhound with the caller holding the decoy behind the shooter. We've been using the Heads Up Decoy the past 2-3 seasons and have had great luck with them. They are very light and don't require any set-up, allowing us to stay mobile and move from set-up to set-up without feeling bogged down. Plus, the bow mount is really nice for using a decoy when hunting solo...

Has anyone ever used them to move on a herd way out in the middle of a field or meadow? I know about the dangers that other hunters present, but aside from that it has occured to me that this is a technique commonly used with speed goats for archery. I'd like some feedback if anyone has tried it with elk.

Yes, I've used mine in full sight of elk and walked (sometimes ran) towards two bulls that were fighting while herd of cows stood there watching me (and the bulls).  The two big bulls were fighting and I was trying to get close.  I was just about in position to shoot one of them and the bigger of the two just drove the other guy over the edge of a draw and down into a gully.  I mean he drove him like a locomotive when he decided enough was enough.  One of the most exciting sights I've been privleged to see in the woods. 

Oh, I'm sure the big guys were distracted while fighting, which helped me get close.  But, after I dropped the decoy with my mouth hanging open at the sheer power of a bull elk, the cows noticed I wasn't one of them and spooked off.  I also thought that maybe it wasn't such a good idea to have been standing out in the open without a tree to hide behind!

Yeah i have used decoys on elk and moose and they worked perfect.  Montana decoys and quick light and easy.

I will second Corey's post on the "Heads Up Decoys". I cant stand my Montana decoy . It is cumbersome to set up, and heavier than the   
Heads Up. I hunt alone more than not, and the Heads up is easy to use and quick and silent to set up.

P.S. I will sell you my Montana Decoy....Cheap! LOL!
