Columbia Plateau Wildlife Management Association Cow Permit
« on: October 18, 2012, 03:47:24 PM »
Awhile back, I bought a few raffle tickets for one of the January cow hunts over outside of the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge through the Columbia Plateau Wildlife Management Association.  I learned about the CPWMA from a friend of mine and purchased the tickets because the money goes to help procure access for outdoorsman on several different properties around Cheney that CPWMA manages.  I thought it was a worth while group, so I decided to give away a few dollars to help a good cause.

So this morning, I got an email from them saying I was drawn for one of the 1/1-1/15 cow permits.  :yike: I don't ever seem to be the "lucky" one, so it was kind of shocking to me that I was actually drawn.  I will still be able to hunt Modern on the Westside, but I am excited to do a little elk hunting in January if I don't tag out on a bull in November.

Have any of you guys ever been drawn for one of these permits or hunted elk around the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge?  I want to educate myself on this area since I have never hunted any of their properties, so any pointers or information about this area would be appreciated.

i went to school there for 6 years and did ALOT of hunting there. The elk are feed on certain properties and tend to move around alot. i am not familiar with the CPWMA though. do they have property for you to hunt? if they dont then you might be sol. its hard to get permission for most places around there and the properties where the elk frequent are usually locked up by lease and or family hunters. if you have any pm me with any questions about where to start looking and knocking on doors.

Yeah, they have a couple of different parcels that they have access to as shown on this map from their website. https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=ZGVmYXVsdGRvbWFpbnxjb2x1bWJpYXBsYXRlYXV3aWxkbGlmZW1nbXR8Z3g6M2U2ZWQxODI1ZWY4MDdlMA

The email said that I will get a packet from them within the next week, so maybe I am being a little premature. The other cool thing is, if I fill my regular tag, then the permit is completely transferable to another hunter of my choice.

The more people that know, the less likely you will ever get "lucky" again. Bragging about it on the internet will only limit your chances and others of ever getting drawn in the future.  You do realize that you just advertised limited, private land access permits around Turnbull WR.  Do you not think anybody who reads this will not look into these hunts in the future?

Sorry for being the internet police, just seen many great opportunities like this destroyed because it was posted for the world to see. Either way have a good hunt. I believe that this is the first year offered and you will be assigned to a property. So nobody will likely have any information to help you, but now anyone who reads this knows about it.

:dunno:Why would letting more people know about something that primary purpose is to raise money for hunting access be a bad thing :twocents:

I guess they only think charity raffles are good if you can keep the number of donations down. That way the fewer who know it exists to donate the better odds they have of getting drawn.

Congrats on the draw though.

How do you think this additional access is being funded? Pay to play on private ground. So families who may have hunted a property for years no longer have access because some one with $$$$$ now has it locked up. Before you know it, WA will be like Texas with everyone having to pay $$$ to access private land.

Agreed, besides these raffles are listed in the WDFW game pamphlet.

I didnt think this raffle was a big secret and like I said before, the CPWMA is trying to procure access to private lands for people to hunt.  They actually have a free draw where anyone can put in for access to hunt the properties that they manage without ever paying a dime.  Maybe I am missing something, but it seems like a good group for outdoorsman to support.  :twocents:

Selfish? Yeah, definitely. But apparently the point is lost on a few of you. Good luck trying to access any of their properties next year. I have a feeling they will be a bit harder to get drawn. How many here would be willing to share the great opportunities in areas that they hunt? I'll be waiting for a pm.
