Picked up the new 300 RUM Striker
« on: December 03, 2012, 10:08:13 PM »
I finally picked up my new Savage Striker in 300 Rem Ultra Mag. I took my son out with me to test it on Sunday. Didn't get to shoot it much though. It's a little more than he likes to be around while shooting because of the noise. He did think that it's pretty cool that fire comes out the end of the barrel though. :chuckle:

The gun is one of Neal Cooper's creations. It's a Savage factory 300 RUM barrel which he sent off to Benchmark to have it cut and crowned at 18.5", hand lapped, muzzle brake installed, and Nitrided. The stock is a standard Striker stock which has been camo dipped, but I can't remember the camo style used. It came with a nice fitted hard case, scope, and a couple boxes of factory ammo. I'm going to swap out the Weaver 2.5-8x pistol scope for a rifle scope, probably a Leupold VX3-L 4.5-14. The gun shoots well under .5 MOA with the 168 TSX and a case full of H1000. I'm going to try the Berger 215gr Hybrids to see how they do.

This makes Striker number 3.  They're getting pretty hard to find and more expensive every year.  I almost feel bad about buying them just to re barrel them. I think I"m going to have another barrel made in 6.5-375 Ruger and possibly one in 416 Ruger to make the ultimate 3 barrel package.

Just for fun, here are pics of the other two pistols.

This one is the Savage Target action with a 19" Benchmark Nitrided barrel in 6mm BR in a Neal Cooper rear grip stock.

And the 18" Benchmark barrel in 338-375 Ruger with a 3 port Muscle Brake on a Savage Striker action in a modified and painted factory stock.

These things are addictive. I just wish that they were easier to find!

Andrew

If I understand correctly it is exactly the same thing as a savage rifle except you're using a shorter barrel and there's not really a stock. Does nobody make the striker... stock? (for lack of a better word I guess.)

Are those left and right handed? :dunno: One look's like it's left hand and the second one look's left but no bolt handle and the other look's right but the bolt handle look's like it's on the left side of the scope.  :dunno: Nice toys.

Didn't Remington make the original Striker ?

Are you thinking about the Remington Fireball? I think that's what they were called. Bolt action pistol and I think it was a 221 or 223, not sure. Saw one of those in 1970, long time ago! :yike:

Nice guns Yorke! Have you measured the actual velocity out of the 2 bigger calibers?? Curious as to the gains, if any over smaller cased cartridges.

The Remingtons were the xp-100's. Not sure if they had a bolt pistol before that. They had a good bit of chamberings.

The recoil isn't bad at all. In fact I had to sell most of my big bore revolvers because I can't shoot them any more because of damage done to my wrists, from shooting the the revolvers. I also got rid of my 10mm 1911 because it was painful to shoot after about 20 rounds. I can shoot the bolt action pistols all day long though. With a good brake they have less felt recoil than a 357 mag. The blast is pretty ferocious on the 300 RUM though.  :chuckle: The 6mm BR has almost no recoil.

If I understand correctly it is exactly the same thing as a savage rifle except you're using a shorter barrel and there's not really a stock. Does nobody make the striker... stock? (for lack of a better word I guess.)

A true Striker is a unique action with a different action screw spacing that left the factory as a handgun. They are a left bolt, right port action because like campmeat said, most people are right handed. With the bolt on the left side of the gun you can work the bolt without removing your shooting hand from the grip. It takes a little getting used to. The 6mm BR is built off of a right bolt, left port Savage Target action. You can build a handgun from an undesignated action which has never been assembled as a rifle. Like making an AR pistol from a brand new stripped receiver.

I've been looking for the right deal on a Remington XP-100 and a Weatherby CFP. All of the bolt action pistols are getting hard to find and expensive when you do. So if you happen to have one you don't want any more........ ;)

Nice guns Yorke! Have you measured the actual velocity out of the 2 bigger calibers?? Curious as to the gains, if any over smaller cased cartridges.
I've run the 338-375 through the chronograph many times. My favorite load is a 250 gr Sierra MK at 2650 from the 18" barrel. This is a pretty mild load, but it shoots .3 MOA so i don't mess with it. I've run the 225 TTSX over 2900 fps, but they only shot .75 MOA moving at that speed. The 300 RUM will easily go 3200 fps with a 168 TTSX and H1000 and over 3100 with a 180gr bullet. Basically the 338-375 Ruger case will give me 338 Win Mag ballistics from a handgun, and the RUM will nearly hit 300 Weatherby levels from the short barrel. The RUM barrel has been nitrided though so that has helped to increase the velocities.
