Scope covers while in the field

This will be my first year actually hunting with a rifle due to bow season schedule conflicts. What kind of covers are best yo protect my scope. I ordered a neoprene cover but I see alot of people  use flip up caps on each side. Any Pros or cons?

Hunting in the brush I like the Butler Creek flip ups to keep out water, and allow pretty quick opening in rain/snow etc...  I don't like the neoprene much but didn't spend much time beyond one trip trying it out.  Others mileage may vary.

Flip up caps!!  There is one that has a clear front cover so if it is not rainy you can leave it down and flip as needed.  Flip ups can be opened while bringing the gun up to your shoulder.  I rotate my rear cover a little so the cap doesn't hit the brim of my hat when it is up.

Not sure on the neoprene.  If it has to be stretched onto and off the scope, that takes a bit of time.  Also, does the neoprene hang off the gun and swing around?  Could wiggle the gun around shooting offhand.  Also you are pulling on one end or the other of the scope, which probably has little to ne effect, but why risk it when there are better products out there?

I guess I'm the lonely one that doesn't like the buttler creek flip ups. They always end up flipping up and getting rain or snow in the lens without me knowing. Actually had it screw up a shot on a dandy whitetail in Wyoming, snow filled the lens and when the buck appeared I of course couldn't see, by the time I got it clear he was long gone.

That said I prefer a scope coat. Not quite as fast to throw off but its pretty quick. They are more of a pain but do a much better job of protecting the scope and lenses.

I have the Leupold flip ups on one scope and those are pretty close to perfect, but I have still have had it flip up on me before.

I use both the BC flip ups and neoprene scope coats, depending on the situation. The flip ups are a bit faster, but the neoprene is a bit more reliable: it never "flips up" by accident and it can't break off.

I only use one BC flip up cover on the eye piece of the scope. I leave the objective end uncovered and take care to keep the muzzle pointed down most times.

Hell yes flip ups.
I love 'em.
You won't be sorry for the little extra cost.
I reccomend getting ones with see through covers for front and back.
Like clear or yellow.
The Idea being, that they will protect your scope from water or dust or whatever while you're walking around hunting. Plus the clear caps are helpfull for quick incounters.
For instance... you're walking along a trail, then BAM! A huge buck jumps out in front of you on the trail, and you only have split seconds to throw your gun up and send off a quick shot.
Well, with the clear scope covers, you can see threw them just well enough to make that quick shot, without losing valuable time fliping them open.
It may only be saving you a second or 2, littlerally, but it may be the 1 second in the field that was most crutial.

Yes, scope covers are very important. I'm sure you'll get a bunch a guys that will tell you stories of how they dropped their gun, or climbed up a hill, or whatever, and when they threw their gun up, couldn't see anything, and missed the shot, because it was full of dirt or water.... or whatever.

I tell every guy that I meet they should have 'em. You never know....

I have the same problem, specifically when using a sling and shouldering the gun.

I also have the problem with my zeiss in that the front lens is in between BC sizes.

I have been pondering taking the Zeiss elastic covers they come with and cutting holes in the center and gluing in clear plastic, so they can be used with the caps on in the timber or short rangeif there is not time to remove the cover. Anyone else have any solutions they have come up with?

I have had good luck with the Butler Creek flip caps. They have worked well for me.

I use the old Michaels of Oregon QD scope caps. I bought many sets of them 30 years ago so I have them for every scope I hunt with. You have to have good scope caps hunting in rain.
