Recommend some 308 ammo?
« on: January 27, 2013, 03:54:08 PM »
Hi All,
I'm going to be picking up a savage 111 trophy hunter xp in 308. I'm going to use it for deer, elk, and maybe bear. Also, my 10yo soon will be using it for deer. Can you recommend ammo that will do well on all three critters but keep recoil manageable? I'm thinking something around 165 grains should do it, as the recoil calculators put that at about the same force as a 270.  Yeah I know I'm asking for a magic bullet, just hoping for something that doesn't require me to re-sight the rifle every couple of weeks. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!

I'm actually impressed with the Hornady Superformance ammo.    Shoots real well out of my Savage.   I use it for ll the game you mentioned.

Anything in the 150's and up will work just fine.  My 7yr old son has no problems shooting factory rounds in the 150-180 range.  Good luck.  I like the accubonds or partitions my self if you hand load.

Accubond 165 with a Pachmyre recoil pad.  My boy has been shooting it with no issue since he was 8.  More important that the load is the length of pull.  Make sure it fits him comfortably.  You may need to go out and get a youth stock to swap or just buy the youth model.  An adult can shoot a youth model with more ease than a kid that's too small can shoot a full size stock.

Thanks for the extra tips DoubleJ! I was going to get him shooting sticks to compensate for the adult stock, but hadn't thought of the youth stock swap.

Shooting sticks will help with the weight but not with the length of pull.  If the stock is snug in his shoulder and he has to stretch his trigger arm to reach the trigger, sticks won't help at all.

barnes vortx 150 triple shock

 :yeah:

Less recoil with the 150 grain, but a Barnes will work for anything.
