SKS anyone have any experience
« on: March 07, 2013, 09:44:42 AM »
The Russian SKS and its offshoots is a nice weapon, much more accurate than other AK action weapons, has a longer barrel, and tons of after-market parts. They have experienced 100% inflation in one year so they are in high demand and the supply is very limited. I was thinking of picking one up and Sporterizing it much as I did with my MAC 90. Does anyone have any experience using one? In another year the prices will be stratospheric.

I have found that accuracy of SKSs is a lot to do with the ammo.
I like the Tapco Stocks with the folding stock.Ramline makes a nice MonteCarlo
Style. And of course the Recoill Buffer.I personally prefer the Yugos
With good ammo you can make a decent shooter. Not so cheap anymore
But ammo is still available.

hopefully in another year the price will be back to normal.. i think when you can get them for 200 or less they are a good rifle to have around. it is a rugged durable, .30 caliber semi auto. It wasnt really designed for a scope, most of the "scope mounts' for it are questionable, and you kind of need to use a short optic because it ejects straight up.. i've handled and used a half a dozen or more of these, and they were all reliable, and only saw one that wouldnt shoot a 3" group or so with iron.. the round, with good bullets-is a perfectly capable deer round out to 150yds or so, but not really adequate for elk.. (125gr@2300fps) a lot of the accessories, including the extended mags-are chinese made and of questionable quality, i think the rugged, compact, factory 10rd internal mag is the best way to go, but just my opinion..  i think if you can get one for 200 or less, they are worth it, and good rifles, but if it takes 400-500$ to get one, then I'd look at other options..

I had one for a short time, sold it to a good friend of mine. it was reliable and fun, the one draw back was the 10 round stripper clip, didnt like it much. detachable mags I think would make it more useful IMHO (if you can fine them). If I were to do it over I would just buy an AK or AR.

Mongo Hunter. Do you think your friend would consider selling it?

The Tapco detachable magazines work well on mine, but the prices sure have gone up.  I got it back when Clinton was threatening "Assault Weapons" for about $80.  I wish I had picked up more accessories back then.  Then again, I wish I had picked up more of a lot of things back then.

SKS is a great rifle.  Had one for a few years while we were living in AK. mid 1990's.  Bought for a bit over 100, got a few extra mags and some ammo, sold it to a friend for 250. He was very happy, at that time the basic rifle was selling for 200 -250.
That rifle, with Winchester 139gr ? softpoints broke the neck of an average sized caribou. No complaints.

I have a norinco and its a nice rifle. Do yourself a favor and keep the original stock, it works better than the other aftermarket crap. The monte carlo plasic one's are ok though.
