Confused
« on: June 23, 2013, 01:06:08 PM »
Okay so whats the differance between flossing and plunking? I have been reading and some people call it flossing? Im not wanting to get in trouble. Can I use this setup for salmon?

Isn't the term flossing.......  meaning you are swinging your line through their gaping mouths in order to "foul hook" them.   Sort of like a legal snagging.

plunking you let the bait sit and the fish finds it as it travels up stream.  No real action by the angler toward the fish.
Flossing is intentionally snagging a fish generally in the mouth.  Usually done in clear, shallow water where someone can use (generally) a highly visible lure and drag it across the river and set the hook and maybe snag a fish when the lure gets close to the fish's mouth.  They like to swim with their mouths open so the long leaders partially float and get into the fish mouths...then pull the leader enough until the hook is near the mouth.

Flossing is like drift fishing with a very long(maybe 6 feet) leader and letting the line flow into the fishes mouth, then as you retrieve it, the hook slides into the corner of the mouth. Your gonna ise a small corcky to float your line off the bottom and put it at fish level. Also the yarn will get caught up in the fishes teeth and give you time to set the hook. Thats the idea at least. Lots of fish will hit this set-up so you might as well put on a small egg cluster too.
Plunking is like bait fishing. Cast it, tighten your line and wait. I would suggest using a spin-n-glo and bait if your plunking..

On the other hand it is possible to "plunk-floss". Just sayin'... fish runs into stationary leader and flosses itself. It is known.

Rig in your diagram is a typical and legal plunking setup.

This is basically the same setup I use when plunking on the cowlitz and on the columbia for salmon/steelhead. Usually plunking ur using a spin glo with sand shrimp or prawn tails or whatever u want really? The only difference with my setup is about a foot above ur dropper I tie a barrel swivel with a bead above it on my main line for a stopper so that I can slide down a cut herring for salmon or flat fish or wiggle wart and sometimes even another spin glo. I have caught a ton of fish on this setup especially during springer season sliding down a herring with a prawn on the bottom spin glo. Hope this helps.

When and where are you planning to fish?  I would be happy to tell you what to use if we knew what you were fishing for.  There are few times when plunking will be the best technique for the rivers around you (as in, only when the water is high the fish are moving).
