Are the Bearpaw Outfitters DIY maps with the money?

Anyone have experience with the Do-It-Yourself deer or bear hunting maps that Bearpaw Outfitters sell? Its supposed to show you good areas and a lot of animal specific info. They sell em for $275 or so.

If you (or I) were to track all your expenses it takes to scout a given area I would have to say 275 is an absolute bargain. If you factor in time, which can at times be several seasons, before you truly know the area and game patterns the value of the maps goes up considerably.

I don't think that Bearpaw would put his reputation on the line to sell junk maps, do you? You might want to look at the areas he is offering, compared to the areas you might want to hunt. Besides, like was said earlier, how much money do you want to spend to scout some of the states Bearpaw guides in??

Another question to ask yourself is,,is it worth it TO YOU?

I've always wondered about the elk maps he sells for NE Washington.  Everyone knows it's tough up there to find elk,  takes a lot of work and a littlr luck,  has anyone ever bought one and had success. Or could Bearpaw comment on the success ratios with maps in that area?  Finding a elk spot that produces in NE Washington for $275 is a bargain when considering the fuel spent over a few years to scout the area.

  and they dont exactly disintegrate you can use it for years to come getting the most bang for your buck.

You can just tell from the way Bearpaw runs this site that is a very fair and upstanding guy. My impression I got from him at the Sportsmans Show a few years ago confirmed this to me. I would buy one of his maps without hesitation.

I was already convinced to buy a map. No I've done been sold on it. I just wish I could actually hunt with them. Sounds like it would be one of those experiences where I would feel that I could never tip them enough.

No one is going to be able to give you a map with specific animal locations. They should point you in the general direction of areas that have held animals, and most likely still do. I would ask two questions: (1) how recently were animals sighted in these areas, and (2) how many other hunters have been given maps with these locations?

Dale is a good man and I suspect the maps are valuable if you don't have time to scout.

What does a guy get and how do I go about making the maps?
Currently, I custom make each map depending on what a guy wants. In future years I may decide to post maps for purchase online in advance and let guys choose from a list with an automated limit so that one map can only be sold one or two times each year or something like that. I can't do all areas of WA, but I do know most areas in NE WA, some central GMU's, and some northwest WA GMU's. We also know many areas in ID, UT, and MT. I just completed an Idaho archery elk hunting map Saturday for a guy who didn't have time to scout in advance. I marked 6 locations on a map so that he will have more than one hunting option. He will be able to drive directly to several different locations in the area he has never gone before and has directions where to hike in to get into good elk hunting areas. I hope he can find elk to call. However, I really have no idea if he is capable of quietly getting into the area, if he can successfully call a bull, or if the elk will be talking. I sold him good info that will save him much time and fuel trying to find decent hunting spots and if he puts in his time he should have a reasonable percentage chance of seeing elk and if we are both lucky he'll send me a success photo.

How many maps per area and how many hunters will be seen?
I only have time to make so many maps, I try to give anyone 4 or more hunting locations. I try to mark each map differently so that nobody gets all the same areas the same year as anyone else, but these maps are for areas on public land that get hunted by other people, they are not for private posted land, and I have probably told someone else about some of the locations in the past. If a person specified that they want locations I had never given to anyone else, I could do that too, but they may not be as good as some locations I have previously shared. I don't know of any publicly accessible lands that don't get at least some hunting pressure so a person should expect to see other hunters. I have spent a lifetime learning these areas plus we spend many days in the field each season, so I think it's a bargain to get directions to areas that commonly hold game without having to go spend multiple weekends and tanks of fuel trying to find an area to hunt. My maps will save time and money.

Feedback and Guarantee?
I get feedback from some of the hunters that have had good luck, others that were unsuccessful, and quite a few never send me any feedback. If a person is wanting a map that tells them they are guaranteed to see animals this is probably not the right deal for them. I do not want to sell a map to anyone who is expecting a guarantee of what they might see because I have no way of knowing how good of hunter anyone may be. It's sorta like looking at a fish finder, you know the fish are there, but you can 't make them bite. If anyone wants a guarantee, please buy one of my guaranteed hunts, then if you don't get a reasonable shot opportunity I will refund half your money. It's a 50% money back guarantee.
