The AK-47, IMHO, beats the heck out of the M-16/AR-15 platform for reliability. I think it beats the M-14, and that goes a long, long way.

Apples and oranges...get one of each, they both have thier place. The ak the Glock of the rifle world, the ar more the 1911. Accuracy versus reliability is probably the most basic way to differentiate

What are you going to use it for?  Plinking or a fun day at the range, both will please since they're reliable, easy to shoot and can burn up a lot of money fast.  If you're looking for accuracy, the nod goes to the AR

AR for use in filling tags.  Better accuracy, great money pit with all the aftermarket stuff to doll one up.

AK for the zombie apocalypse.  This is the epitome of "gun don't fail me now".

like someone said.. ideally try to get to shoot both before you buy if possible.. they are very different. AK- poor safety design (must take hand off grip to manipulate), big crude sights set close together, heavier, slower, deer legal round, slower to reload, expect 3-4" groups at 100yds, not many good optics mounting options, 2/3 the price of an AR usually..
AR- good ergonomics, easy to manipulate safety, better trigger, better sights, most are .223-light, fast bullet, good coyote round,(not deer legal in WA), easier to carry lots of ammo with you, flatter shooting at distance, almost all will shoot 1.5" at 100yds or better,  many good scope/optics options, probably better for a beginner to shoot well. Needs more cleaning/maintenance than an AK- but easy to fieldstrip and clean..

Properly setup and lubed they will run a long time, if you piss in the action of an AK once a year or so it will exhibit at least as good a performance.

LOL.  Contradicting yourself a bit.
If they are two different creatures, then you shouldn't compare them in the same pool, or state that one is better than the other. Obviously because they each have their own better qualities.
