Try around the 2500 line.  There always seem to be a few elk hanging out in that area between the road and the river.

Most of the elk are in the mudflow.  If you get to a spot where you can see it, it would be worth it to stop and look.  Otherwise follow the 2500, most of the fresh sign we saw was around the Green river.  Just make sure you hunt the Margaret side of the Green.

Are you going to have access, and if so do you know what gates? When I had my bull tag in '07 I was olnly allowed in the 2900 gate. Was a pain since I camped at the 1900, and planned on the 1900 or 2500 being open. Was a long run each morning to get where I wanted to be. A cow shouldn't be too big of a problem though. The 2500 would be a good starting point like said earlier. Lots of elk along the river(Green) just make sure you stay south of it :)

With a magic tag like the Margret no scouting is needed, right?

Found out the hard way with my archery tag that is not really true anymore.

Should be much easier in January with a rifle.
Here's what I would do: Drive. Eventually see cow. Shoot cow.

Some of the area near the mudflow is in the Margret btw.

Most gates were open on the 15th Dec. Last day of the archery season in there.

I hunt in a unit by the Margaret. I found if they aren't in the clear cuts they are usually in the the timber or reprod. Good luck see you at work in a week.

Margaret doesn't have more than a couple recent cuts. And they draw most of the pressure.

Try the little piece of the unit that is on the South side of the hwy. I had a cow tag last year and found quite a few elk on that side. There should be a blue gate that has no sign on it. Hike back in there and go west. All timber but they are in there. Good luck.

This time of year they are usually in my yard eating blackberry bushes and dandelions.

Standing in the road just behind that perfect clear cut on the backside of the timber just before they make it to the reprod.

We went up to the 2500 and hiked into some timber saw 3 cows right off the get go my buddy didn't have a clear shot. My other buddy had 2 bulls within 50 yards but no cows. Went back up today and say some elk but no luck yet it will get done. Elk are a little harder to find there then I thought they would be.

Yep! Things have changed up there. My sister had the rifle bull tag for Margaret. Wasnt easy but she filled it. Talked to a lot of people that went home empty handed. A few that didnt even see anything.

Well it doesn't take rocket science to figure out that the increase in special permits has hurt the populations for deer and elk. It's only going to get worse. A shame that the populations suffer just because of the greed of the state. One reason why on the survey I suggested they cut special permit numbers.

I hope that ya'll end up being successful on your hunt. I had the archery bull tag and finding elk was tough, I did take a decent 5x but the population of elk in this unit is no better than in a general hunting area such as Winston or coweeman. The Margret needs to be divided and turned into a general hunt on the western half and kept as a quality or Bull hunt on the eastern half. Anyway hope you get a cow and Id suggest walking in along coldwater lake or driving around to the Ryan lake side, No snow up there yet. not sure if gates are closed or not though on that side

I hunted up there for 4.5 days. Seen 14 branched antlered bulls, no cows :bash:. It was weird the day before the opener we saw 45 cows :dunno:

I just spent three days in there trying to help some folks out and we only had one opportunity at a cow. I had a bull tag in 2010 and it was no problem at all to fill it and to see elk all day. Then in 2011 I had a cow tag and hunted for all of 10 minutes before I had a cow down. What happened to the elk? Is it better earlier in the season or has the herd taken that much of a beating from to many tags and hoof rot?

We hunted saturday and got into a herd 15 minutes into the hunt, couldnt get a shot. Later that evening about 45 minutes before dark we got into another herd and my dad was able to anchor a big cow. We only seen 2 bulls out of 20 elk. I hunted it 3 years ago myself for 3 days and did not see anything until the 3rd day and I was able to get a cow. They are where you find them I geuss. I think there are still alot of elk in there, maybe not as many as a few years ago though.

Three things are crashing elk numbers in Margaret
1) Too many trees--not enough feed.  All that Weyco. blast zone has grown up and new clearcuts are sprayed heavy instead of burned.
2) Game Dept. piling on permits to intentionally drop numbers after a winter die-off a few years back and Weyco. complaining about elk eating trees (since there is not much left to eat).
3) Hoof rot starting to hit them up there.

Find feed=find elk

Took my dad down yesterday and after a long day of hunt'n finally found a small group of elk and killed a cow. I know its an odd winter with the lack of snow but it sure seemed like there were no elk any ware! Even when we looked down in the loo wit? Felt pretty fortunate to fill the tag.
