Anyone ever drill out the nipple for a knight
« on: August 11, 2014, 06:41:16 AM »
I was wondering what would happen if you drilled out the nipple, to give it a larger hole for the musket cap to fire through....Good or Bad idea?

Personally, I would say really bad thought... What you would actually be doing is increasing the blowback into the breech/bolt area.  You could actually cause a real safety problem.

The touch hole/flash channel should be in the neighborhood of 0.029 to 0.031" new.

I guess now I have a question why would you want to do such a project?

I was thinking more flame from the cap, less chance of miss fire should the powder become a little moist. Never really considered the blow back, that is a good point. What is the difference in the nipples that are for sale, there are standard OEM ones and there are hot fire or something like that, where the hole is about half the way up the nipple?

The Hot Shot - that small hole on the nipple post defects some of the back pressure gasses to be vented to the side.

LOVE the nipple with the hollow base Spitfire nipple from cabelas, it really spreads out the flame rather than shooting it in a directly straight line.

Why not just buy another nipple that takes musket caps? :dunno:

You are better off and much safer to simply purchase a nipple for musket caps and run them if you want a bit more fire.

Both my brother and I use them on our Knights and have a VERY low misfire rate.  Even on damp/raining/nasty days.

And it helps to keep a hand over the exposed cap in the rain.

Whatta ya mean I can't have one of each?

I bought a frontstuffer lastyear from a guy and he had some extra nipples and one of the no.11's looks to be bored out a little and i shot with it and it worked just fine. That being said it is still considerably smaller than a musket cap so...  :dunno: Sabot's answer sounds smart! Ya don't wanna lose an eye from a musket cap cuz it popped back in your face...

I have a CVA elkhorn and about three different musket cap nipples.  I don't remember which one is "stock", but there is one with a noticeably larger hole  in the center.  I have fewer missfires with this nipple and there has been no adverse problems while using it.  All were bought from the store (none used) and I didn't drill any of them myself.   I always put the one with the larger pin hole in to start the hunt and the others are my backup.

Just for the heck off it turn it over and compare the flash hole with the others...

The flash or Touch Hole should all be relative the same 0.029 to 0.032"

Save your face guy, This is how Remington made the news with their trigger problem. Dont try and sporterize what the engineers have tested in a chamber.

There are in fact other nipples on the market with larger flash holes. Hot shot nipples, red hot nipples, etc. There are even a couple with extra side holes. They do not create any problems with blow back. I took one of my musket nipples and enlarged it to 1/16+ of an inch. Much better fire, and no blow back. Where you will get a problem is in inclement weather. The larger hole tends to wisk in more water during sleet and rain storms. So be prepared for miss fires do to moisture. Just my two bits!

Unfortunately they didn't test them in western WA during the monsoon season.
