Those look like some decent sized quarters.  Any rack to go with them?

:chuckle:  not my intent at all.  I posted this from my phone as we came home to hang meat then headed back out to try and get my buddy an elk.  My computer died on the trip.  I got home wed night and had to work yesterday and today.  I will post tomorrow after I buy a new computer and have a day off.

I will start by saying;  This has been the best elk season I have seen in the last 4-5 years.  The bulls were bugling and the cows were chatting up a storm.  We were into elk every day and we even had a little luck on our side.

Day one:  We wake up to a crisp morning and starting our hike.  We leave the truck about 30 minutes before hunting hours to make the trek in.  We are about 100 yards from our stand when I feel a grumble in my tummy......yup that's right.....I have to go and it is not going to wait.  This is a huge NO NO for us as we never lay blockers (our term for turds) in our hunting area.  I tell my buddy I have to back out and make the trek back to the truck.  Of course he giggles, what good hunting partner wouldn't??  He continues and I back out.  The plan has changed....I now would be at least an hour late to my stand, but it's what had to be done.

Our stands are about 100 yards apart, which has historically worked really well for calling.  I tell my partner when I get in my stand I will give two cow calls to alert him.  Well about 0830 I make it back to my stand.  I let out two cow calls and my buddy responds back with two.  About 10 seconds later the woods lit up.....elk were talking all around us.  It happened so fast I didn't have time to take my pack off.  I go to a knee and knock an arrow.  Ten seconds later I see horns coming through the trees....I can now hear and feel my heart beat.  The largest bull I have ever seen in this area is now 25 yards broadside to me.  The bull has no Idea I am there and is trying to wind my partner.  The only bad thing about this scenario is......I don't have a bull tag!!!!

It was still fun to see and watch.  Needless to say no cows followed.   The bull left about a minute later and ran up the hill.  He must have been sexually frustrated cause he picked a fight with a tree that was approx. 30" in diameter.  He broke every branch off the first 5 feet of that tree.  It was pretty impressive to see (we found the tree on day two).

Day two:  Same plan as day one, with almost the same results.  We locate the heard and they are little further up ridge.  We decide to get the wind in our favor and try to call.  The bulls were responsive but we couldn't draw any cows in.  We mess with them for the better part of the morning and then decide to leave them be.  Still a great day.

Day three (aka kill day):  We knew we were driving the herd up ridge so we decided to move to the top.  Our plan was to hit the top of the ridge an hour before sun up and locate the herd.  Well the night before a buddy came to camp and we stayed up too late.  Needless to say the plan was still in effect, we were just not going to get there an hour early.  As we drive to the top hunting hours are quickly approaching.   The sun is on the horizon and the hills are starting to light up.  We are about 100 yards from where we are going to park and I look out the passenger window....and there she stood.  A huge cow elk in a clear cut about 50 yards off the road.  My partner stops the truck and I get out and retrieve my bow from the back seat.  My buddy drives on and I stand behind a tree on the side of the road.  I knock an arrow and notice another truck coming up the road.  I let that truck pass and think to myself, there is no way this elk will still be there.

I peek out from behind the tree to see this elk still broadside.  I of course left my range finder in the truck.....so I do the mental math marking off 20 yard increments and decide she is 50 yards away.  In order to shoot I have to move away from my concealment.....no way she is going to let me do this.  I take two steps and she does a 180.  Now she is facing the other way and slightly quartering away from me.  I come to full draw and take two more steps.  I settle the pin on the last rip, which puts exit on off side shoulder (center).  I send it....everything feels good and looks good until she tries to jump the string.  She wheels to her left making my shot extremely hard quartering away.  I see the arrow enter on the last rib but now the exit is brisket area.  She wheels and sounds like a herd of elephant as she crashes off.  30 seconds later it is silent.

Me and my partner talk and decide to let her lay for couple hours.  We sit and watch the rest of the heard vacate the area.  We range the tree she was next to and it ranges at 54 yards.  I know my shot hit it's mark....I just didn't like the angle.  I was worried I only got one lung.   I had mixed feeling...extremely pumped cause we have an arrow in a big elk and extremely worried due to the less than ideal shot.

As the time came we moved over the hill.  We went to point of impact and identified her tracks.  There was no blood which did not concern us as her tracks were really easy to see in the clear cut.  Well after about 40 yards the only blood I found was the size of a pin head.  Now I am seriously worried.  We still had good tracks to follow so we did just that.  We flagged as we went to keep direction of travel.  We were moving slow looking for blood....but just not finding any.  This goes on for about 100 yards until she entered a small batch of trees.  In the trees the ground hardened up and her tracks now looked like all other tracks.....luckily we now find two areas with blood (very small but at least we knew we were on the right track.  We exit the trees and are back in the cut.  Her tracks are now just like all the rest (literally 100's of tracks everywhere).

I am pretty frustrated and extremely worried at this point.  We start checking different trails (slowly) looking for blood....NOTHING.   All of a sudden the wind shifted and I got strong smell of elk.  I check wind direction and move down the trail where the smell came from......My partner followed as he smelled it too.  approx. 30 yards further we hit a row of trees.  I peak my head through and there she lay...deader than a doornail.  High fives and a little thank you to the man up stairs for this recovery.  Now the work begins.

After gutting her.....My arrow entered right behind the last rib.  It fractured (obliterated) the last three ribs.  It lacerated the liver, punctured the diaphragm and destroyed the left lung.  The entire 30" arrow was in her chest cavity with no exit wound.  I think she was dead within a 5 minutes of the shot.  The reason there was no blood is the entrance was high due to a downhill shot and she just filled up.

The rest of trip was just as eventful....with the exception of my partner did not get an elk.  We had multiple bulls with in shooting range.  If we had a bull tag we would have both tagged out.  It was an amazing trip and we both get to put a half an elk in the freezer.  Our rule is....if you help pack you help eat.  We split everything 50/50 cause it is the right thing to do.  This is also the reason we only hunt with two in our group.   :chuckle:

I hope this wasn't tooooooo lonnnng.... I will post more pics as I get them off my partners camera.
